Coming up this weekend it is the 20th anniversary of my husband's death (suicide).
I need to get away from tomorrow until Monday, any suggestions?
Budget - as cheap as possible up to €1000.

💐 I have no idea as I am useless, but hope you find somewhere peaceful.

FelicityFlops · 06/12/2023 23:52

Nobody?

Where are you and where do you want to go? Peaceful and reflective or a noisy distraction?

JustCuriousASHP · 06/12/2023 23:54

Well, the area you're in would help. Not much point me suggesting a place in Skye if you're in Exeter.

MrsPerfect12 · 06/12/2023 23:55

New York?

WhateverMate · 06/12/2023 23:55

Not enough info I'm afraid as we have no idea of what you like/dislike and whether you want UK or abroad?

Globules · 06/12/2023 23:56

I'd suggest Gdansk. It's beautiful and very peaceful. The Polish are very welcoming.

I'm sorry for your loss. Grief is a bitch.

MsMcGonagall · 06/12/2023 23:56

booking.com is good for short stay accommodation... but yes, need to know what type of getaway you are after - rural, urban, UK, not UK, etc

Run4it2 · 06/12/2023 23:58

Riga is lovely for a short break and easily doable in your budget. Could go to Prague either?

Booksforchristmastime · 06/12/2023 23:58

Go to Barcelona. It’s amazing. Lovely food, lovely people, lovely parks, sights, sea swimming…

minou123 · 07/12/2023 00:00

If you want to stay in the UK, a bed and breakfast in a city or seaside resort might be good.

POTC · 07/12/2023 00:00

Come to Geneva and join me in a sports hall watching Tchoukball! Christmas markets are on too. I'm going to watch my 16yr old play and his gf who lives with us is coming too, I'd happily have some adult company!

RNBrie · 07/12/2023 00:02

Madrid. Its a beautiful city, food is great and its pretty cheap to eat and get around and plenty of places to visit.

Beamur · 07/12/2023 00:02

Norfolk
Northumberland
North Devon
Big skies and beautiful coasts.

minou123 · 07/12/2023 00:02

The Christmas Market in Strasbourg may also be a good place to go for 4 nights.

Kaltenzahn · 07/12/2023 00:03

What kind of thing are you thinking of OP?

You could do the whole traditional Christmas market thing somewhere in Germany if you're feeling festive?

If you don't fancy Germany I think Budapest or Prague both look lovely in the winter.

I'm so sorry for what you've been through. I hope wherever you end up the weekend goes as easily as it can do 💜

AutumnCrow · 07/12/2023 00:04

Do you have transport, OP? (i.e. a car)

FelicityFlops · 07/12/2023 00:06

Wow, thanks so much for the responses. Bit freaked out at the reference to Exeter, which is where I grew up.
I am in Europe and can fly or drive.
I did look at places closer to where I live, but your input has got me thinking about France, Austria and Italy.
I think I want buzz, good food and swimming.

@minou123 That is a really good call! I live about 2 hours by car from Strasbourg and was a student there. Thank you!

Avignon for a couple of nights then TGB down to Barcelona 👌. Sorry about the situation, this weekend next year will be a milestone date since the death of DS's DDad (alcohol related), every year it still catches me out.

Willyoujustbequiet · 07/12/2023 00:13

I'm sorry, thats going to be a hard one. Somethings never get easier.

I second Northumberland. Wild windswept coasts and moors. Its good for the soul.

bungletru · 07/12/2023 00:14

Barcelona
or dublin

FelicityFlops · 07/12/2023 00:18

Love Dublin, worked there about 13 years ago, sadly a bit out of the price range at the moment :-( because I want business class flights and 5 star hotels. Oh dear :-)
Northumberland looks wonderful, but far too difficult to get to (not to mention expensive, which, sadly, is the face of the UK at the moment).

Budapest and the thermal baths, heated outdoor bathing pools in the snow….

Geekylover · 07/12/2023 00:40

Sorry for your grief.
venice. It’s magical and if you like you can book an opera like the musica palazzo or walk around the canals.
