Coming up this weekend it is the 20th anniversary of my husband's death (suicide).
I need to get away from tomorrow until Monday, any suggestions?
Budget - as cheap as possible up to €1000.

I'm sorry 'anniversaries' of this kind are hard!

Ah curve ball with swimming in Dec

id look at Copenhagen, Cologne or another place with excellent Christmas Markets and a hotel with a pool.

but I LOVE those Christmas Markets. Mostly the food & Gluwein!!

I am really grateful for all the suggestions, but am wimping out and going to Frankfurt as it is a relatively short drive and I get "points" for staying at a certain hotel that I call Zenda.
If anyone knows the novel The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope they will know that Zenda was an old hunting lodge, this place was about it, but has been much modernised over the past 14 years. Rooms and facilities are great, food was good, but is now awful again.
You can't have everything!
Big plus, I never stayed here with my husband :-)

Have a lovely time OP

I used to live in Frankfurt but haven't been back for over 20 years

Nice! You can travel to all the gorgeous towns and villages easily by train. So much lovliness all along the coast. Antibes has an amazing daily market (brocante) and a fort!
Much to see in Nice too, esp daily market in old town.

@FelicityFlops Spain is probably your best bet if you need some TLC at a lower cost I’d say!
sending love!
