To ask about electric under blankets

2023forme · 06/12/2023 12:34

AIBU to ask for feedback on electric under blankets (the ones that go on the mattress) -DH and I in different camps. He wants one, I’m not convinced.

my biggest concern is where the Connector sits - DD has one and there is a bulky connector part which you couldn’t possibly lie on. She’s in a double bed on her own so she just positions it at the other side away from her.

DH thinks this is a tiny issue and “we’ll be fine”.

So those of you who have them - any words of wisdom regarding the best ones to buy/avoid?

YABU; electric blankets are fantastic and I wouldn’t be without mine
YANBU: electric blankets are a good idea but their design makes them too hard to sleep on

We wouldn’t be without ours, the connector bit sits at the very edge of the mattress and although it is bulky I have never felt it or lay on it while sleeping. We have ours on smart plugs so the bed is already warm when we get in - bliss!

justthecat · 06/12/2023 12:39

Love mine

2023forme · 06/12/2023 12:46

@SlipperyLizard @justthecat - care to share the type you have please?

I have a cheap single size pad from Amazon. Could be an option to have one just for your husband's side. The connector usually sits under my pillow

justthecat · 06/12/2023 12:51

Silent night from Amazon. I've got on a king size bed , put on number 3 for three hours before bed, but once in you'll turn after a hour and cheap to run. I didn't have on other night and could feel the difference and it's not even that bad here yet

JoyeuxNarwhal · 06/12/2023 12:52

Connector on mine is under my pillow. Doesn't bother me there.
I have a single one on a king-size bed. Dh is beginning to creep over to my side now it's getting colder at night but hasn't yet decided to get his own..
Mines from Lidl. Had it around 3 years and still fine. You can change the heating levels and also how long it's on for. The only thing is if you have it on all night you need to cover the control handset because it has the brightest blue LEDs you ever did see!

tomatoontoast · 06/12/2023 12:52

Love mine

CattingAbout · 06/12/2023 12:53

We put the connector bit down the foot end of the bed. It's right on the edge of the pad. The cable is long enough that you can still reach the controller from the top end of the bed.

Cheeesus · 06/12/2023 12:54

The bulky bit just sits at the edge on mine. Further over than I can lie. You can also position it so it’s just under the pillow.

Mumof2teens79 · 06/12/2023 12:55

Power connector is on DH side ...it doesn't bother me

@SlipperyLizard - thanks - will check it out. It is the type of thing I’d be happy to pay a bit more for to get it right!

We've got this one Intelligent Warmth... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08KRBW5G4?ref=ppxpopmobapshare
Which means that we can each have different temperatures (and different temperature for top half/bottom half as well.
Controller sits by pillow and isn't in the way.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 06/12/2023 14:46

It’s honestly the best thing since sliced bread…..

HelloSunshine11 · 06/12/2023 14:50

We also have the dreamland. It's the best money I've ever spent. I don't think DH has ever switched his side on but he doesn't moan about the connectors, and it makes for a good mattress topper even without being switched on.

LostThestral · 06/12/2023 14:55

we had one & it was absolutely great until it singed a hole in the blanket & sheet & gave DH a small zap where the wires had worn & rubbed together

MapleSyrupWaffles · 06/12/2023 14:55

I have a Silent Night one as well.

The app used to be good but no longer works properly - it won't do a countdown timer unless the app is open, which is pointless, and you don't seem to be able to update the app at all. So I have to remember to turn it off before I go to sleep, even if it's still not as warm as I'd like, as otherwise I'll wake up boiling in the middle of the night. I do like being able to turn it on in advance, though. Just wish the automatic timer worked. Maybe I need a different app/plug - I'm just using the silent night one that came together.

I do feel the controller, but I put it at the edge of the bed so that it's less obvious. The blanket is also not quite as big as I'd like, so it leaves my feet cold!

But otherwise lovely, and saves the hassle of filling a hot water bottle.

oishutup · 06/12/2023 14:57

Dreamland dual control - absolutely amazing. Fleecy and cosy under the sheets. Controls down the side of the bed, and my husband and I can have whatever temperature we want each side of the bed. Absolutely love it.

BigDahliaFan · 06/12/2023 15:01

Love ours...need to buy a smart plug so can turn it on from downstairs...

It's dual control....

Have this too! Love it.

SlipperyLizard · 06/12/2023 16:00

@MapleSyrupWaffles we use Tapo smart plugs, we schedule it to come on each might but if it needs more or we’ve missed our usual bedtime, the Tapo app lets us set a timer so it will turn off in 5/10 mins or however long.

We had an Amazon smart plug but there was no timer function.

BringMeTea · 06/12/2023 16:27

Only had mine 2 weeks... God I love it!

SquashPenguin · 06/12/2023 16:34

I look forward to mine all day. We get into bed and make the same noises Joey and Chandler make when they put back their recliners on Friends 😆. If you are feeling a bit sore and achey at all it’s heaven. They are so relaxing! We have a silent night one and put it so the switch is at the end of the bed.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 06/12/2023 16:34

We have the dreamland dual control too - wouldn't be without, in fact -2 here and just put DP side in for him coming in from work because he will need a snooze and a heat (working outside today). Connector right at edge of bed. Interested in @CattingAbout idea - will investigate when next change the bed!
