16yo
Wants a job. Apparently.
Weirdly, a job hasn't fluttered into his bedroom and landed on his lap so he is most perplexed.

Picked up an application form for him from a local supermarket.
Encourage him to get a pen (no easy feat) and sit down to complete application.

20 seconds later... "What's my name?"

And that was just the beginning. I swear a 4yo would make a better employee. I fear for our future.

Note from MNHQ - we've edited the title as we had a few reports about one of the terms used there. We're sure there was no intention to offend but it was clearly upsetting a few people and we didn't want the issue to derail the thread

My daughter's friend thought chickens suckled their young. Because chickens have breasts. She was doing A-level biology and went on to become a teacher.

She was doing A level biology and didn’t understand what a mammal is?

Please can this thread go into Classics as its made my day!

I also have a DD who would lose her head if it wasn't screwed on. I always tell her to look for something WITH BOTH EYES! 👀

I think it should , I'm off unwell today but this thread has really made me laugh and cheered me up .

Maybe we should have a moronic students thread too!

I know someone who deals with students letting flats from their agency and the stories I hear are amazing about those who qualified for a very prestigious University. Losing your keys at 3 in the morning and expecting the emergency contact to drive into the city to get the keys then drive to the flat to let them in instead of calling an emergency locksmith, whose number they'd been given, to come out. Mummy though agreed with them and complained about their lack of care of her little 20 year old child.
Reading many of these pages though it's hardly surprising considering how mollycoddled so many teenagers are, 14 year olds who've never been on a bus alone for example. I wonder how many writing on this thread are regretting things they did/didn't do as parents?

Aged seventeen left DD at home whilst we went away for a weekend (okay with hindsight it was unwise..). Agreed she would not have a party whilst we were away and no more than five friends for a sleepover...

Came back from lovely weekend and as we approached the house we could still see smoke coming from the kitchen extension where there was clear and significant fire damage. DD had not had a party apparently, but she had held a "soiree" where she had lit candles all over the kitchen to create an ambience. It did not appear logical to monitor these candles as the night went on and the kitchen surfaces they were on were wooden.

It was a very long time before we did any further trips away.

I once held a pan of spaghetti over the sink and tipped it out to drain. Only I had forgotten to put the colander in the sink. Found myself looking down at a mass of pasta sprawled all over the bottom of the sink. I was a supposedly functioning adult at the time, too.

I once made stock, and then drained it as if it was pasta. So all the actual stock was down the drain, and I was left with the bones.

I did that too

SingingSands · 06/12/2023 14:14

This one still makes me laugh years later:

DD's drama teacher left at the end of term, moving on to a new school after seeing DD's cohort all the way through school, GCSE's and A-Levels. DD and her friends were sad to see her go.

They were chatting about it together

Friend 1: "I'm so sad Miss has left"
Friend 2: "Yeah, we don't even know what school she's gone to"
DD: "yes we do! She told us she's moving on to "Pastures New" but I've never heard of it, is it in Leeds?"

🤣

Fraaahnces · 06/12/2023 14:15

Oooh I forgot this one… Not my kid, but local teenaged rough nuts. I work nights and my DH leaves for his work very early in the morning. He rang me after he left, saying “What’s with your parking last night? You parked it on a really weird angle!!!” I just assumed I’d done that because I was tired until a couple of policemen knocked on my door about half an hour after DH rang. My (crappy old) car had been broken into and hot wired. It was driven approximately two meters and left with the doors unlocked. It would seem the local rough nuts have no idea what to do with manual cars.

Has it occurred to you that many, if not most, of these stories are from older posters whose kids are adults now therefore these events happened years ago when things were different.

It happened 5 years ago. @TarantinoIsAMisogynist can chose to disbelieve it if they wish but unless they work in MH/emergency services, I don't see how they could possibly know how things work.
Ambulances are also called for people who are drunk and for people who are in early labour but don't fancy/think to make their own way to the hospital. And ambulances do have to come out in case there is an emergency which call handlers can't assess on the phone. It's not ideal but that's how it works.
I am obviously not going to disclose the exact details of the situation but there was a certain level of artistic license employed to make the mother sound like a danger to herself and others.

Thank you so much for pointing this out. I am full of regret. With this admonishment, I will do better as a parent.

This ones on you I'm afraid. Only ever ask questions that can be answered with a simple binary 'yes' or 'no'. However I know plenty of supposedly intelligent adults who will still manage to answer a completely different question to the one I asked.

The really oldies, like me, will maybe remember a section of a quiz show called the Yes/No interlude, many of these teenagers would do very well on that it seems.

SirenSays · 06/12/2023 14:27

They decided to help with cooking. Which meant thickening the Mediterranean fish stew with 3/4 of a tub of beef gravy granules.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 06/12/2023 14:27

Not exactly moronic, just a series of unfortunate events....

We used to have a large shared house with a big garden and my son and his BF (late teens) erected a gazebo to do metal work, welding etc in. All good encouraging creativity etc.

One afternoon I was upstairs looking after dear MIL (dementia, not too far advanced) when there was an almighty bang. I flew downstairs to find DS's best friend being put out in the downstairs shower by another friend minus eyebrows, some hair and with a flash burn.

Turns out he'd been welding in high wind, an aerosol can had been blown off a shelf, a spark had caused it to explode and he'd nearly immolated himself. No serious damage thanks to quick thinking friend, and I had to resist the urge to shout loudly about safety equipment like helmets and goggles - which they had - when I came down off the ceiling.

Then I had to minimise the whole thing to a very bewildered MIL "Oh it was just the boys messing about in the garden .... EVERYTHING IS FINE!!!! Ha ha ha - whelp!"

Alltheyearround · 06/12/2023 14:28

I have to confess, as a teen when watching TV, an on screen recommendation was made to ask bill payer before phoning the expensive number for whatever it was.

Who is Bill Payer? I said.

Bill Payer became a legend in our household.

Cornishbelle · 06/12/2023 14:30

Slightly off topic, but first time mum of soon to be teenager here, can I ask- do they start to become 'slow' for want of a better word, almost slurring sometimes and getting words mixed up, a kind of the lights are in but nobody is home scenario? At other times he moves too fast and bashes into things, or slams stuff down withiut meaning to. Am guessing the motor skills go a bit haywire? This thread is going to keep me awake at night as we're getting to that stage I think!😫

LoveableDave · 06/12/2023 14:30

This must be why there are YouTube tutorials on just about everything these days, however obvious (you would think).

I think a couple of years ago a father made a YouTube video for his children on How the change a toilet roll, and it was very popular.

Alltheyearround · 06/12/2023 14:31

@SingingSands Pastures New is where Bill Payer is thinking of moving to.

Alargeoneplease89 · 06/12/2023 14:31

There is many and he's meant to be clever but has zero common sense.

  • Doesn't dress appropriately- jumpers in the height of summer, ripped jeans in winter.
  • Arranges to meet his friend, so I drive him to his friend's house to pick him up but find out after getting through severe roadworks that his friend has just arrived at our house.
  • Ask him to keep an ear out for the door as I'm expecting a medication delivery... medication is left on the doorstep as my son told him to leave them there, he wasn't sure if he was allowed to open the door, as I told him to keep an ear out and not open the door.
  • Found someone's PE kit and tried to find them as school was ending, didn't occur to him that most people actually leave to go home and searched the whole school for her for 30 minutes, instead of just taking it to lost property.

There are so many, I actually worry how he is going to function in real life / uni as its only a few years away.

I’ve done that! Lovely proper chicken stock that had been simmering for ages - down the drain.😩

Prior to covid, I came home from work to find both DC's sitting in a dark house with lighted candles, both completely forlorn over a power cut.
There was no power cut. Apparently they came home and asked Alexa to turn on the lights and TV, unbeknownst to them the Alexa was unplugged and for about 2hrs neither of them thought to just physically turn a light on.

Now that IS funny!! Plonkers Grin
