Bradley Walsh sexism in the Chase

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/12/2023 17:37

So a female contestant said she worked at a university medical school and Bradley asked her “have you got a background in nursing”.

Bet he wouldn’t have asked a man that!

Funnily enough if she had a background in nursing she’d be more likely to work in the nursing department! Which will not be part of the medical school.

Bit sexist to think only women can be nurses... (both OP and Bradley)

Bradley has not done that but OP has...

So they liked him then? As they didn't not think too highly of him?

He did not not not not like him 😂.

(Apparently BW was very offish and between takes stomped off behind stage. They were on first thing and friend thinks it may have just been early morning grumping but it wasn’t a fun experience for them).

Not really related but I’ve had nothing but issues with my iPhone keyboard since the last update, it’s getting really irritating.

He's good friends with Holly Willoughby that's enough to put me off him.

🙄

SanFranBear · 04/12/2023 21:22

I've been on The Chase and this...

Not only does Brad get info from the researchers but he speaks to the contestants beforehand

Sadly, no he doesn't! Perhaps he used to but he is not how he comes across on the telly, all matey and up for a laugh! He is a consummate professional, there to do a job... and does it well, to be honest!

Secondtonaan · 04/12/2023 21:35

I get where you're coming from OP.

I work in a hospital and will sometimes use NHS ID for other things (like when you got free parking or discount stuff during Covid)

A few people asked me if I was a nurse and I wondered if they'd have said that if I was a man.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 04/12/2023 21:18

No i haven’t. But Bradley insinuated it. I think you must have misunderstood my post. 🤷‍♀️

Not that serious, there are people literally dying unnecessarily all over the world.

Christ here we go. Women aren't allowed to voice an opinion on anything without being called a "pearl clutchers" on Mumsnet. Could be worse, could be "you're such a Karen Op!"

People can recognise the sexism in something and want to discuss without being mortally offended by it. We can also recognise that sexism is a spectrum, that involves "milder" cultural sexism and biased thinking. No one is calling for Bradders to be cancelled so you can all rest easy.

Exactly. Thank you. Once upon a time on MN such a post would have resulted in an interesting discussion on subconscious sexism. Instead there’s now just a lot of insult flinging and little critical thought or discussion.

Shame MN has gone downhill so much, used to be an intelligent type place. I can assure everyone I’m not a pearl clutcher nor professionally offended. 😁

Same here - l bloody love him!

Oh I’m sorry. Are we only allowed to discuss those topics. I hope you’ve been on 99% of threads today and said the same. Just to be sure are the only topics allowed Gaza, Ukraine, anywhere else people are dying due to war and poverty. Fabulous, glad I know now.

He's a twat. I've always hated the sight of him Envy

I also hate him with a fiery passion. I'm not sure why. I just do.

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/12/2023 17:55

Because I think it’s far more likely he’d have asked a man if he had a background of being a doctor. Not a nurse.

You are making assumptions, you sound the sexist one.

CormorantStrikesBack · 05/12/2023 06:52

Alargeoneplease89 · 05/12/2023 06:39

No, he was making assumptions. Why did he assume she was a nurse? Yes, 20 years of working in an nhs hospital and seeing multiple people assume female doctors are nurses and assuming male theatre staff/nurses in scrubs are doctors does make me “assume” Bradley also thinks like this, combined with him actually assuming a female medical school worker was a nurse. Nursing schools are different to medical schools so why would a nurse be in a medical school?

I think it's an interesting point you make, OP. It can be irritating to see the low-level, casual sexism because there is so much if it! When it creeps into a fun TV show it can feel especially annoying.

The people accusing you of pearl clutching sound very 'pearl clutching' themselves at a woman expressing an observation on the internet.

So do I. Best presenter on TV by an absolute mile 😍

ronswansonstache · 05/12/2023 07:14

Phonedown · 04/12/2023 18:03

Its been noted in our house that he tells way more men who under perform in their cash-builder, "You're a better player than that mate", than women. It annoys me and every time I have to say "how do you know that Bradders?", to the TV. So yes, he is guilty of (probably) unconscious bias at best.

I have been on The Chase and he said this to me! (Only got 3 in the cash builder...). I'm not a man.

I only briefly met him but he seemed a perfect gent to me.

Rosecoffeecup · 05/12/2023 07:14

TicTacNicNak · 04/12/2023 18:41

There was a young woman on a few weeks back who was from such and such a place but was currently from X (big university city). Brad asked her if she was at uni there. Turned out she already had a degree and masters and was working at the university in some important role. Brad just made an assumption she was a young student.

That's why he asked...to illicit an answer that he, and the researchers, already know but want to draw out more naturally

Hello Bradder’s PR 👋

Teeheehee1579 · 05/12/2023 07:22

I agree with you OP that subconscious sexism about women as nurses and men as doctors abounds but I think the programme is to blame here - it will be scripted for Bradley Walsh, he won’t be ad libbing much as he may make it sound like he is.

erinaceus · 05/12/2023 07:25

I would send the feedback to ITV (or The Chase production company, or their social media). (But I love the Chase and by extension Bradders, he seems like a decent chap who blunders from time to time.)

I am really glad there are some people on this thread who have been on The Chase. I plan to apply, I’ve been on something similar once before.
