To know if she has covid and then, hopefully, keep out of people’s way until she’s better. Also, some of us qualify for anti virals and I don’t know if the OP does but you can’t get them without doing a test.

People still thinking Covid is nothing but a mild illness need to think again. It may be for some but people are still being admitted to hospital with it. Plus the danger of Long Covid, which is a serious problem for some.

With any respiratory illness she should be keeping out of people's way - not just covid. Flu is still a killer too.

@Isittimeformynapyet
No, you've misunderstood. @Medstudent12 said that people under 50kg need lower doses of paracetamol and are given such in hospital. This is true and is in the BNF. Yes, larger people can't take more but smaller people have to take less. This is why children's doses are smaller. @garlictwist is only 8.5 stone (roughly 53kgs) which, as I said, is close to the lower weight limit and therefore she is at a greater risk of toxicity. I hope this makes sense.

OK sorry, I re-read @Medstudent12 's post and see what you mean.

I guess when administered as IV liquid in hospital they can give a lower dose, but there's no distinction on OTC packaging about increased danger to smaller people.

Got an inhaler and antibiotics. Thanks all

I'll join you in the inhaler and antibiotics camp, I got the same this morning from my walk in centre due to a chest infection.
Hope you feel better soon

I googled it last night and a lot of articles saying it wasn’t proved - also I wouldn’t stay on codeine too long, it’s very addictive

I've just come off the phone after a long chat with an old, old friend who's now in her 50s, a senior nurse practitioner who is in charge of her health trust's minor injury and walk-in units. I told her about this thread and the OP's situation and people advising going to A&E because of a 1g overdose of paracetamol and she said that if anyone walked into any of the clinics in her service or into A&E in her area on the basis that they'd taken an overdose of 1g of paracetamol, they'd be sent home immediately if they were a relatively normal sized-adult with no liver problems. They'd also be issued a warning not to waste NHS time and resources in future. 111 for anything like this and only go to a hospital if they tell you to.

How would they know if they had liver problems, if no one will test them?

QuestionableMouse · 02/12/2023 16:05

zingally · 02/12/2023 10:57

As a pharmacist friend once said to me, the dosage on the packaging is a big under-estimation of the amount you'd need to take to do any harm.

You'll be fine.

This is not true and is fucking stupid and dangerous advice. @zingally

Pluvia · 02/12/2023 17:35

Whenever you get a headache do you go to A&E and ask for a scan just in case it's a brain tumour that hasn't been diagnosed yet? Most people don't have liver problems. The NHS can't be expected to test anyone who may or may not have taken a tiny overdose of paracetamol for liver problems.

If this is the kind of care you want, take out private health insurance.

I think you may need to find an out of hours clinic or ring 111.
My grandson 13 has been really ill for ten days with a really bad chest infection, similar symptoms as yours, his mum took him to the gp last Monday, he was quite concerned, said gs has fluid in one lung and prescribed antibiotics, bed rest and fluids and said to contact the surgery again if he throws up during coughing as he might need to go to hospital.

Growlybear83 · 03/12/2023 11:33

OP, it sounds like you've got a nasty dose of the flu, in which case there's little you can do but stay in bed and take paracetamol at the recommended dosage. If it's proper flu, you can expect to be quite unwell for a good week. Have you had your flu jab?

Indoorvoicesbluey · 04/12/2023 23:18

Thanks all, feeling rubbish still! Less aches but my throat and my tongue are raw. Iv barely slept. Iv taken night nurse every night just to take the edge off for 3 hours but then I wake up coughing horrifically but extremely tired! And it’s making me nearly wee myself

im literally waking up drenched in sweat when I do get sleep too. I tried napping today but can’t :(

I feel so run down. Cough sounds more mucus than just dry now

Daffodilsandtuplips · 04/12/2023 23:38

I still think you should see your doctor.

Christ how many times do you have to be told to see a doctor? You probably need antibiotics!

She has seen a Dr. And has been prescribed an inhaler and antibiotic.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 05/12/2023 08:01

I know she’s on antibiotics and an inhaler but she may need different medication.

LizzieW1969 · 05/12/2023 08:42

When I had flu back in 2019, it turned into pneumonia and the first antibiotic I was prescribed didn’t work. I had to be put on a double antibiotic before I finally recovered (after 3 weeks).

I’m not saying that it’s what you have, OP, but you really should go back to your GP.

Hope you get well soon.
