You’re going to have the best nights sleep! Enjoy!

@fourelementary not necessarily. For paracetamol, toxicity generally starts at 75mg/kg. If the OP weighs 80kg (so 12 and a half stone) that’s only 6000mg. If more than 5g in 24 hours the OP should phone 111.

Rarely starts at 75mg/kg. More likely to be at 150mg/kg.
On the whole I’d say she doesn’t actually sound that stressed, nhs not likely to be much help… but obviously if she feels worse or has known liver issues etc then she should get advice. But it’s unlikely to be an issue given a few doses of NN and regular low dose cocodamol four times today…

JennieTheZebra · 01/12/2023 21:01

@fourelementary You’re probably right. It’s just that I’ve seen some nasty paracetamol overdoses in my time so paracetamol always makes me nervous. Paracetamol can go so wrong, so quickly-especially if the nausea and vomiting is either ignored or presumed to be part of the illness that is being treated. I still think there’s no harm in calling 111 though, that’s what they’re there for.

TuesdayQ · 01/12/2023 21:04

This. And usually staggered overdoses, such as someone taking Day/Night Nurse and co-codamol concurrently for 24hrs. It's so important to know the total 24hr paracetamol ingestion, and patient weight.

Yes that’s a good point- not easy to tell you’re unwell due to overdose symptoms or worsening illness/ongoing illness. Fair point. But I think the op doesn’t seem like she wants to seek further help than MN…

HeWhoMustNotBeNamed · 01/12/2023 21:12

Really OP I would ring 111 just to double check. Please don't trust an anonymous forum for medical advice.

I called them a few weeks ago for something completely different and they were lovely. It's their job to help people in your situation.

Edited to add that I'm pretty sure you can also do an online questionnaire on the NHS website if you don't want to phone.

You may need A&E but don't wait, as you have a narrow window ( I think 4 hours) with paracetamol overdose in which to be treated before liver damage is irreversible.

Balloonhearts · 01/12/2023 21:22

Also Covonia cough drops are the bollocks. Especially the Berry ones.

This isn't the case with paracetamol and could be dangerous advice: someone taking day/night nurse & co-codamol, as per directions, for 24hrs, puts themselves very close to the fatal toxicity level and definitely in the realm of NAC treatment.

MumblesParty · 01/12/2023 21:24

If you look at your tablets and the Night Nurse, and tell us exactly how much paracetamol you have taken in the last 24 hours, we can advise you if you have anything to worry about.

So you have taken 6 x 500mg tablets = 3 grams.

  • 20 mls night nurse. = another one gram.

Total ingested is 4g which is the acceptable dose in 24 hours.

Hope you are feeling better soon op. From the information you have given here, I'm not seeing an overdose.

The issue is that OP said that she tried night nurse “last night”. If that was actually in the early hours of the morning then potentially she could have taken a lot more…

Not sure if you had flu you’d be wanting or able to post on here. Probably need to check with a pharmacist

Oh for God's sake, not another one spouting this nonsense.

Why did you post if you're not going to take people's advice, OP?

Call 111. You're probably fine but you need medical advice.

Zanatdy · 01/12/2023 21:51

Co-codamol etc won’t help with a cough. Agree with calling 111

The codeine is a cough suppressant.

Are you sure you have overdosed on paracetamol?

Teder · 01/12/2023 22:02

Paracetamol can be dangerous even in slight overdoses. There are many varying factors.
Taking advice from MN is foolish - there is some poor advice on here.
It really is not a huge hardship to seek advice from NHS 111 (or the equivalent).

I spent 16 hours in A&E last Christmas (after 4 1/2 in the GP surgery being treated and waiting for an ambulance) and was on my phone keeping in touch with my husband and friends and trying to distract myself from what was going on round me and to stave off utter boredom - was diagnosed with flu and only sent home as they physically had no beds in the hospital they could admit me to plus, not being ‘elderly’, they felt I would manage at home with DH’s support!!
