I’m going to get a Covid test today because I can smell or taste anything, my appetite has completely gone.

I'd try and see someone today if you can at a walk-in or wherever - just to get your chest listened to. I've had flu that has turned into atypical pneumonia that needed IV antibiotics a few times. Stay safe.

Hijacking but do you have any stats or info on what this is? I'm worried I may have taken too many paracetamol. I'm about 8.5 stone and five foot four and have taken eight during the night for awful pain.

There’s a really informative post from a doctor upthread about dosages and body weight.
It’s not true that paracetamol dosage is tailored according body weight, my DH is 6’3” and 14st 7lb, I’m 5’3” and 10st . The dosage is the same for us both: 2 x 500mg four hourly
Eight over how many hours? It sounds like you’ve taken a full days dosage over six to eight hours. Don’t take any more today, Don’t take anything else containing paracetamol, No cold remedies.

Why do you want a covid test? Won't change how you are treated?

WhenLoveIsDone · 02/12/2023 07:15

Cocodamol is a bloody stupid thing to take for routine seasonal illnesses.

biter · 02/12/2023 07:17

Paracetamol won't help the cough. I won't comment on the amount you've taken as I'm not qualified.

For the cough Try : drinking warm tea with a teaspoon of turmeric in it. Or a warm teaspoon of olive oil mixed with turmeric. Turmeric helps coughs. Echinacea tablets / liquid help with symptoms too. You can take these as well as over the counter medicines with no Ill effects.

And use a Vapor inhaler - big dollop of Vicks's / few drop of olbas oil or eucalyptus in a bowl of steaming hot water, towel over your head and breathe deeply.

To know if she has covid and then, hopefully, keep out of people’s way until she’s better. Also, some of us qualify for anti virals and I don’t know if the OP does but you can’t get them without doing a test.

People still thinking Covid is nothing but a mild illness need to think again. It may be for some but people are still being admitted to hospital with it. Plus the danger of Long Covid, which is a serious problem for some.

SharonEllis · 02/12/2023 08:40

I wouldnt crank the heating up in this situation. An overheated house is guaranteed to make you feel worse. Better to have lots of layers and get some fresh air in.

CampsieGlamper · 02/12/2023 08:40

Don't worry about shitting yourself - with co-codamol it will not be an issue.

JennieTheZebra · 02/12/2023 09:09

@Daffodilsandtuplips Yes, that’s largely true (the toxic amount of paracetamol is somewhere between 75mg/kg and 150mg/kg but you need to take other things into account such as liver function rather than it being purely on weight, so it can get messy iyswim) but the PP said that she weighed 8.5 stone, which is only 53 kg. 53 kg is borderline for being given lower doses in hospital as Medstudent12 said, and it is probable that the amount needed for it to be toxic in garlictwist is actually lower than it would be for someone of a higher weight. @garlictwist if you start to feel really sick/throwing up you need to seek medical attention-and please stop taking paracetamol for the next few days.

ItAintGonnaGoDownEasyIfItAintCheezy · 02/12/2023 09:25

Sure that dose is fine. I used to take 6-8 cocodamol and a litre of jack when I had an (unknown) infection in the bone in my gum (thought it was just toothache).

OP probably has a temperature, perfectly understandably.

Thanks all going to the walk in clinic today.

all my joints ache, I have a pounding headache and I can barely breathe. I have a dry cough that’s making me gag because I’m coughing so much and has also hurt my stomach muscles :(

It only classes as an OD if you’ve had more than the suggested amount over a 24 hour period. I accidentally OD’d on paracetamol in January when I had a dental abscess, it was the worst pain I’d ever felt (even worse than childbirth) so I was taking cocodomol every 4 hours including over night. I didn’t realise you could only take 3 doses in 24 hours. I had a drip with some sort of antidote for a few hours and I was fine.

Is there a pharmacy open late you could go to or call? Or call 101.

101 is the non emergency police. Don't ring them!

justasking111 · 01/12/2023 23:28

Cocodamol makes me light headed. The best thing I've found for a cough is a glass of hot water two tspns of honey and a good squirt of lemon juice. Keep it by the bed and sip as needed. It even works when cold. I soon go back to sleep.

Good advice.

The only med in my house is aspirin. All of those non prescription things like night nurse just mask symptoms and stop the body doing what it needs to do to fight infection.

Salt water gargle for sore throat, hot shower for cough, mustard for upset stomach. Otherwise plenty of water and sleep.

Isittimeformynapyet · 02/12/2023 10:03

@JennieTheZebra "Medstudent12 said, and it is probable that the amount needed for it to be toxic ingarlictwist is actually lower than it would be for someone of a higher weight."

@Medstudent12 said exactly the opposite of this! She clearly advised not to take weight into consideration when judging paracetamol dosage. Larger people cannot take more than the recommended dose.

I had that sort of cough with covid. The muscles throughout my midsection were really painful. Took more than a month for the cough to subside.

Please wear a mask if you use public transport.

FUPAgirl · 02/12/2023 10:06

I've had this too, just getting over it now. You just have to ride it out unfortunately. I took the occasional dose of paracetamol when my temp was particularly high, but otherwise nothing, taking codeine for this is madness. Take care!

declutteringmymind · 02/12/2023 10:12

Sleep as upright as you can

zingally · 02/12/2023 10:57

As a pharmacist friend once said to me, the dosage on the packaging is a big under-estimation of the amount you'd need to take to do any harm.

You'll be fine.

JennieTheZebra · 02/12/2023 11:42

@Isittimeformynapyet
No, you've misunderstood. @Medstudent12 said that people under 50kg need lower doses of paracetamol and are given such in hospital. This is true and is in the BNF. Yes, larger people can't take more but smaller people have to take less. This is why children's doses are smaller. @garlictwist is only 8.5 stone (roughly 53kgs) which, as I said, is close to the lower weight limit and therefore she is at a greater risk of toxicity. I hope this makes sense.

Indoorvoicesbluey · 02/12/2023 11:49

Got an inhaler and antibiotics. Thanks all
