To never buy Anchor butter again?

I feel well and truly duped and am so annoyed.
They were on ‘special offer’ and cheaper than Tesco standard so I bought a few for Christmas baking.

They looked the same size as the other butters..

But I’ve gone to use one and it’s 200 grams instead of 250 grams..

The weight is well hidden on the back.

Scammers!

I’m NEVER buying Anchor butter again!

Shrinkflation is one thing, outright theft is another. I bought a box of eye masks the other day, 25 in a box, off Amazon. Bestseller, over 25,000 reviews and over 4.5 *. There were 24 in the box (counted as there was an empty slot in the tray).

Has also happened with tampons and pads.

The time and effort required to go back and argue that one was missing, knowing they won’t believe you, just isn’t worth it.

I don’t count anything now. Not worth the energy spent on getting angry.

Northernersther · 30/11/2023 22:46

YANBU. So fucking tired of companies taking the piss.

Tanktanktank · 30/11/2023 22:48

I got caught out exactly the same a couple of weeks ago. Completely mucked up my massive baking schedule for 8 huge sponges.

You really have to be careful now. But even the X price per Y labels they have on products aren't always clear. seems to be made as difficult as possible to gauge a comparison between two similar products. like 3 onions in a pack and the labels say X price per onion, but the loose onions are labelled X price per 100g or 1kg.

Waitrose is the worst culprit for this. One product priced 4 different ways. Per unit , per kilogram, by grams and another by wash. They are still crooks like every other supermarket, just in a shiny suit.

Caswallonthefox · 30/11/2023 22:57

I grew up eating anchor butter, then for reasons only known to my mother, she chose to eat st ivels gold instead. I have never come across anything as rank as that. We protested so much that she got us flora instead.
Now I find anchor too salty.

AllisColm · 30/11/2023 23:05

It's the same as all the chocolate things in Poundland! They are smaller. You need to read and check.

snackatack · 30/11/2023 23:15

StillWantingADog · 30/11/2023 20:47

I have learnt to always look at the price per kilo.

not sure about other shops but in sainsburys this is very clearly marked

wish it was the same for fruit - some in gs some in kgs - some in per fruit,.

There should be a standard all shops have to stick to.

SisyphusDad · 30/11/2023 23:16

To be slightly fair, yes Yeo has reduced its block size to 200g but it also reduced didn't increase the price. Once I noticed I - sad git - stood there working out the cost per 100g for a range of butters and Yeo ended up as about the same as everyone else. I guess they're counting on people just looking at the price, not the quantity, so I suppose they're still sneaky bastards.

I thought you were going to say it wasn't really made from green, green grass. 🤣
All you heathens need Kerrygold.

Kerrygold comes in 200g in my local cornershops :\

BlueGrey1 · 30/11/2023 23:17

I only ever buy Kerrygold

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 30/11/2023 23:19

And this is the problem. Lots of UK recipes are based around 8oz. It means you'd have to buy two packs of butter.

I can't help thinking that this might well be deliberate, as a third way to steal a march on their customers.

As well as lower quantities of product per se, and increased prices on top of that, they know that you will now need to buy more packs. Thus, regardless of the increased price and smaller amount in the packet, they hope to sell 400g of butter to customers who would otherwise have only bought 250g.

And like with the bizarre 23 Quorn nuggets in a pack, if you never completely finish a pack (i.e. you have 5 left, when everybody has 6), what are you going to do but have to buy another pack to get the 'missing one' - and on it goes.

I can't see most of them simply halving the size/quantity of most products, as then, people would just buy two of them, thus they don't wrest any extra unplanned and unwanted sales out of them.

Guesswho88 · 30/11/2023 23:20

Oh.My.God 😱

Not even being sarcastic. That's terrible! I'm not going buy it either.

Lookingforward01 · 30/11/2023 23:20

YANBU.

I've also boycotted Heinz.

Dinnerladyposhschool · 30/11/2023 23:20

Dolce gusto coffee pods - latte has 8 drinks (16 pods) in a box. Saw them reasonably priced so bought a couple of boxes, found out later theres now only 6 drinks in a box! Bloody bar stewards!!!🤬

greenacrylicpaint · 30/11/2023 20:18

yanbu
butter is one of the things that should come in standard sizes.
what the heck will we do if we come across grans recipe asking for half a block of butter?

To be fair in this scenario, unless your gran is very young, I doubt that her recipes (maybe handed down from her mum/gran) will be using grams!

FreshWinterMorning · 30/11/2023 23:22

This has happened to so many things now. We are being ripped off every day. Makes me sad, and also angry.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 30/11/2023 23:24

There's no point in boycotting any specific brands purely based on their devious shrinking of packets, as they will all be doing it in a matter of time - even the own brands.

They'll probably also add insult to injury by citing the fact that shoppers are now universally preferring to choose the 200g packs as justification for it - rather than the 250g packs that they now cannot actually buy!

StrawberrySquash · 30/11/2023 23:33

It's particularly annoying as lots of recipes are based on American sticks and a stick used to be exactly half a pack. And my butter dish is just the right size for a slice off a 250g block.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 30/11/2023 23:42

And my butter dish is just the right size for a slice off a 250g block.

Before long, they'll start exclusively manufacturing smaller butter dishes as well - and then we'll all soon realise how dreadfully remiss and foolish we were to ever forget that we've always been friends with Eurasia and always hated Oceania Grin

Graasspp · 30/11/2023 23:54

I said similar about mince now normally being 400g instead of 500 and recipes are usually 500g or 1kg.
Nobody agreed then

Copperoliverbear · 30/11/2023 23:58

I couldn't eat anything but anchor

Happyhippos21 · 01/12/2023 00:00

I moved frpm lurpack to president quite recently, when i noticed the tiny lurpacks. I actually prefer president. Its all cream, no oil.

Happyhippos21 · 01/12/2023 00:03

@Graasspp this makes so much sense. I wondered why suddenly i was getting three normal portions and one for a mouse rather than 4 full portions from a box of mince
