to wear my Oodie in the cinema?

I'm the kind of person who feels the cold very easily, and my local cinema is always freezing. I usually wear my coat throughout the performance, but it's always a bit uncomfortable. But then I remembered my Oodie which is very warm, and perfect for relaxing in and watching a movie. The Oodie in question is clean and plain navy so won't look garish or (I hope) be too obvious to anyone walking by. The cinema will be dark anyway and it's one of the fancy cinemas with reclining seats so space isn't an issue. I won't wear the Oodie into the cinema, I'll bring it in a bag and change there (and use my coat as a blanket for my legs if needed).

I thought this was the perfect plan, but I mentioned it to DH and he looked horrified. So is this plan genius or a terrible idea?

Oodies are not pyjamas, dressing gowns or onesies Confused

They're big, extra thick hoodies, so not the same at all.

They’re always in the nightwear section of the shop, with the pyjamas and dressing gowns.

fruitpastille · 30/11/2023 13:11

I've started taking a blanket but I am very drawn to the oodie idea! I think it's ok but would definitely take it in a bag and just wear while watching. My inner snob wouldn't allow it in a naice independent cinema though 😁 It really doesn't matter what we think - do what makes you happy, it harms nobody!

BestZebbie · 30/11/2023 13:11

I take a blanket in with me, so have no real concept of how to be cool in a cinema....but aren't the bum-length Oodies OK for indoor or outdoor use?
When I went camping in September everyone seemed to be wearing either an Oodie or a dry robe to walk round the campsite in broad daylight, certainly not just as nightwear! On that basis, I think you'd be fine.

Verv · 30/11/2023 13:13

If people can wear a dry robe to Sainsbury's you can wear an oodie to the cinema.

Ethylred · 30/11/2023 13:14

No idea what an oodie is but do it. Double do it.

Jk987 · 30/11/2023 13:16

If you were on a date, I'd say no! The cinema in the dark? I don't understand how anyone would notice, nevermind care.

ManateeFair · 30/11/2023 13:18

Putting something warm on over your normal clothes, in the cinema where is it dark and nobody can see you, is not remotely equivalent to wearing a dressing gown/pyjamas in public.

Yes, Oodies are weird-looking items and no, I wouldn't wear one out to dinner or on a trip to the shops, but who could possibly be bothered to give a shit what a stranger wears to keep warm for two hours while watching a film in the dark? You're only going to be wearing it for the duration of the film, and nobody's looking you.

My local cinema is bloody freezing and I regularly end up using my coat as blanket. I don't own an Oodie but I can imagine they'd be ideal for the purpose you describe.

Northernnight · 30/11/2023 13:19

Well if it’s dark who is gonna know or care.

if they do care they’re probably jealous of your coziness and should mind their business

Letsgetouttahere2023 · 30/11/2023 13:19

Personally I wouldn't wear pyjamas out but it seems there is a definite section of who don't care

Plus its a lot less offensive in the cinema than the playground

wearedonnnne · 30/11/2023 13:20

I have vowed to never go to the cinema without a blanket again.

Problem is I go so rarely that when I do eventually go I have forgotten!

Our cinema (Cineworld) is always freezing 🥶

BillionaireTea · 30/11/2023 13:20

If you're on a date, you can get up to a fair bit under an Oodie... me and.my boyfriend had a great time under a duffel coat recently.

DH thought it was along the lines of wearing your dressing gown and slippers to Tesco. I haven't seen a thread about an Oodie in the cinema before, but I have seen very long threads about pyjamas at hotel breakfast buffet, which are universally panned on MN

I have to say I agree with your DH. Do you not own a sweater and warm socks?

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 30/11/2023 13:31

I take a fleece blanket with me, but I'd definitely wear an oodie if I had one.

Desecratedcoconut · 30/11/2023 13:32

Well, clearly I'm in the minority but I would be miffed if dh wore an oodie to the cinema with me.

The thought of dh trying to fondle me under an oodie when I'm trying to watch a film for the first time in months uninterrupted by dc would lead to divorce. Clearly I'm now over that hill!

Yeah, implied 'getting up to stuff' at the cinema is really grotty territory.

Sherwil16 · 30/11/2023 13:37

Our local cinema is currently apologising for the lack of air- con in cinema 5, making the room too warm! I'm just so pleased that there are people actually going to the cinema, as, after Covid, it seemed as if the cinema was a spent force, with Netflix etc taking all the customers away.

MrsWhites · 30/11/2023 13:39

A friend of mine went to the cinema recently with a blanket and a hot water bottle - I was insanely jealous I’d never thought of that before!

SingingSands · 30/11/2023 13:42

If I saw you doing this in our local cinema, I'd think... "what a clever idea, why didn't I think of that?!"

I've been caught out by not bringing a coat before and been so cold throughout the film that I was distracted and didn't enjoy it.

Go for it OP.

Isn't the whole point of going to the cinema while dating to 'get up to stuff'?

LubaLuca · 30/11/2023 13:45

I would be very jealous if I spotted someone wearing their oodie at the cinema, and I'd admire your forethought! Why haven't I thought of it?! It's always too cold in there, which I suppose is to stop people like me from nodding off 😀

Iheartmysmart · 30/11/2023 13:46

My local cinema is the same, absolutely bloody freezing. Especially if you go to a showing that isn’t that busy. I’d love to wear my Kuddly but unfortunately chose one that glows in the dark so I’m stuck with thermals and multiple layers!

If it requires a blanket or an oodie to cover then just take it to a room.

Kiwi93 · 30/11/2023 13:50

Great idea! I take a blanket with me to the cinema because it’s always freezing.
