Really regretting getting the Covid jab (warning pity party)

FlemCandango · 29/11/2023 12:27

I had my COVID vaccination on Saturday. I have had all the available boosters since lockdown as I have had some health issues that put me in a "slightly vulnerable to COVID" category.

Went to local chemist had the jab and a charity shop mooch, then came home all fine. 10-12 hours later I start feeling ropey. I know I might be in for a rough night as I have been known to react badly. So I had violent chills, followed by feverishness, crazy fever dreams, headache untouched by paracetamol, couldn't get out of bed for a wee without help, joint pain, nausea, loss of appetite ... This went on for 24 hours. I was still a wreck on Monday, so day off work, Tuesday tired but felt better and felt normal by the evening. I expected to be back at work today.

Then in the middle of the night, chills again I was shivering violently, headache returned plus sore throat and a cough. Most likely an opportunistic virus 🦠 but I am wondering why I put myself through all this🙄

Not sure if the net benefit outweighs the massively inconvenient time off work and feeling like shit-ness of it all.

I will think hard before taking the next booster if offered. I have the flu jab every year - never any issues with that one.

Most of what you feel when you're ill is your immune system trying to fight something.
Temperature, swelling, headaches etc.
So you feel rough for a few days, then immune system wins and you are fine.
If your immune system doesn't recognise the threat, or doesn't fight it, the infection spreads and multiplies but you probably feel fine....until it overcomes your organs

I developed acute myocarditis after getting one. Confirmed by a cardiologist and reported as a side effect. Feel so frustrated when I see people talking about heartburn and palpitations after the Covid vaccine and it getting brushed off as anxiety or the perimenopause. Men don’t get health issues brushed off this way.

I am not an anti vaxxer as I got it and was injured.

The gaslighting of the vaccine injured is scary. I'm not anti-vax, I took the early vaccinations and luckily had no major side effects, but I can't get my head around the reluctance of many to accept or even countenance that there are serious risks for some people - even if it is a small minority - who take these vaccinations.

witchypaws · 29/11/2023 14:45

I was pretty unwell overnight after my last one but not sure if it was that one or the flu vaccine as I had both together
8 covid vaccines now and the first was the worst I think

reallypuzzledoverthis · 29/11/2023 14:50

My friend was hospitalised with acute myocarditis following he second vaccine, now has a pace maker and can't climb stairs without stopping twice. Before the jab he was running ten miles daily, loved swimming, hiking and action sports, even underwent the SAS selection training. No history or family history of heart problems, fit as a fiddle.
Make of that what you will.

My son aged 15 at the time got pericarditis after his second jab and has been advised to have no more. I am not an anti-vaxxer but I get very frustrated with people claiming it's all tin foil hatted nutters claiming that they had a vaccine reaction. It's easy to sneer until the incredibly rare reaction happens to someone you love.

This. I’m really sorry to hear that about your son. I believe that young men are over represented in experiencing cardio symptoms after covid vaccination. Ds is 20 now so can choose for himself while he was under 18 I didn’t allow him to have another jab after the first two and a booster.

Anisette · 29/11/2023 14:54

Sounds unlikely to be the vaccination if you've had it before without problems. More likely to be one of the very unpleasant bugs that are going around currently.

LaurieStrode · 29/11/2023 14:55

The reaction is the sign of a robust immune system. It's a small price to pay for not dying of Covid.

I'm having another booster Friday and know it likely will mean a ruined weekend, but it's the right thing to do.

Ffsmakeitstop · 29/11/2023 15:01

We've all had 4 vaccines with no reactions apart from sore arms except for DH who 12 hours after the last one suffered a stroke. Not massive but it has left him very weak and with the onset of dementia. So none of us are risking another one. Our GP actually said that a link couldn't be ruled out because they just don't know enough.

I don’t understand the certainty here. Doesn’t anyone else remember when the first lot were rolled out and pretty much everyone was ill and had side effects afterwards. I know I did. Every member of of my family did - children less affected though. Almost exactly 12 hours after the jab my temperature shot up and I was ill for about three days and then it disappeared. There were warnings that this might be the case when you went for the jab, handed sheets as you left telling you to be aware that it might happen.

Edited

I don’t know anyone who reacted to the first jab and it’s certainly not true that everyone was affected.

And they warn you after any vaccination that you may develop a fever/chills/muscle pain after.

You get that advice when your dc are vaccinated with their baby shots, their MMR, people who have the flu vaccine get the same advice.

So let’s stop this anti covid vacs hysteria and not make it into something it isn’t.

Nannyfannybanny · 29/11/2023 15:19

I joined the covidence study at Queen Mary's university London,we did blood tests,it was the only study to begin, before people had had Covid..I followed all the rules, was very careful, have had 5 jabs. The first AZ, I was fine for 12 hours, then the rigors, chills, aches pains. I felt rough a couple of days, then washed out for a week.I was fully aware it was my immune system response. Had nothing with the others. I am not CV. I have come in contact with DGKs and their mum when they have tested positive, I had never had a symptom or positive test.THEN, in September, I contracted Covid! I have had flu and pneumonia in the past, but this was a whole new level of nasty. I am now under a cardiac consultant and audiology consultant. I was so breathless that one day, just removing 2 pillow cases from the bed, left me breathless, exhausted and laying down the rest of the day. I dread to think how I'll I would have been without the jabs. Both my DDs have had Covid 5 times and assure me that the first time is the worst.

BethDuttonsTwin · 29/11/2023 16:00

Most people posting on here reacted and I am sorry I just don’t believe that you don’t know anyone who reacted. It was standard at the time, though severity differed and some recovered faster than others. The blind acceptance that the jab is “the right thing to do” just beggars belief after all this time.

I never understand that! I'm immunocompromised and was unwell with most vaccines (including pneumonia etc) and my immune system is shot
My dad who doesn't have a single medical problem doesn't even get a sore arm Confused

EasternStandard · 29/11/2023 16:06

I was surprised by the vaccine reaction as I had a really high temp and felt weird all day

It was more than Covid, where I felt dizzy one evening

But you never know how it’ll work out so I don’t know how you will weigh up having it again or not

This is what my GP said. They can’t say whether the vaccine was the trigger for my heart attack - the data won’t be available for another 10-20 years and by that time it’s not of any use to me! I’m not in any way an anti vaxxer, I had the Covid jab and a few boosters before feeling wary enough not to want another.

StaunchMomma · 29/11/2023 16:18

Some people react badly to the flu jab, too.

I suffered with my first jab but now I feel fine, just a sore arm.

Better a few ropey days than death, is how I see it.

Ffsmakeitstop · 29/11/2023 16:44

I'm sorry you've suffered that. It's a difficult situation so none of us know what to do for the best.
I hope you recover as well as possible.

lollo8 · 29/11/2023 17:16

Never had one and absolutely no regrets.

I am certain that in 20 years or so, the mass vaccination programme (which was very nearly enforced by law) will come to be seen as a terrible mistake.

I remember when Kate Bingham emphatically said that only the vulnerable would have a vaccination. I remember when public figures all the way up to President Biden said 'you will not catch covid if you have this jab'. I remember the utterly insane vaccine passport proposal, which so nearly came into law, on the (completely wrong) assertion that the vaccine would prevent transmission.

What a bizarre set of lies.

Ponderingwindow · 29/11/2023 17:21

both the Covid shot and the flu shot make me sick. It is part of why I need them. I just schedule them for a time I can plan to be ill. I typically aim for a Thursday, take a Friday off, have the weekend to recover and I’m good by Monday.

dh has a worse immune system than me. When he doesn’t we get really worried because testing has shown it means he likely isn’t making antibodies at all if he didn’t get sick.

being medically fragile is such a joy

I don’t know the nature of your immune system issue but it may be you don’t have a defect in the overall functioning of your immune system. Or it may be that the defect is a different part.

I have a primary immunodeficiency and I am on immune suppression for autoimmune diseases. I have never reacted to any vaccine. When my antibodies to certain bacteria and viruses (which I’ve been vaccinated again) been tested, they are very low.

nottaotter · 29/11/2023 17:32

@hjytrjulykuyh thats scary, have you reacted to anything else in the same way?

enchantedsquirrelwood · 29/11/2023 17:38

My mum was saying she's always had Pfizer before and had no significant side effects but the last time she had a Moderna one with the new strains, and felt awful afterwards for a few days.

It may also depends on other ingredients in the vaccine that your body decides it doesn't like.

Or you just had a cold brewing at the same time!

4939 · 29/11/2023 17:40

Ill with side effects with all of the 4 I have had regardless of manufacturer. I could have a fifth this season but am not. Have had COVID twice and not as poorly at all as with the vaccinations - possibly due having had the vaccinations of course.

I have a medical background and understand how they work and how the immune system can respond. For me, the unwanted negative effects outweigh any possible benefit to having a fifth vaccine at the moment. If there is a particularly dangerous new variant with a new vaccine I shall likely have it as benefit may then outweigh side effects as it did for first couple.
Personal choice. Don’t let side effects put you off any medicine/treatment. (Have also had chemo which was awful worse thing ever but did indeed save me)

Carmargo · 29/11/2023 17:43

I am so glad that in spite of intense pressure and coercion I held out and have never had this untested vaccine.

Look it's simple: they were desperate times and desperate measures like the vaccine were rolled out.

Anyone who had/has it is essentially taking one for the team/society in the hope that it did/does good and while that is honourable I do not for one second believe it is safe.

They've simply NOT been tried and tested for long enough. Everyone who has it is a human guinea pig.

I won't be one. Sorry.

Sofiabella · 29/11/2023 17:44

I got both jabs purely because I wanted to go abroad. Have never and will never get a booster. If I could go back I wouldn't have had a single jab.
Neither of my children have had them. We all had Covid really early on, pre vaccine. Had mild colds.
