So went to a school nativity and one child (a background character) was covered in fairy lights. It was so distracting and odd

the costumes were all homemade and I'm just wondering why would parents stick lights all over their child it was so distracting and garish!

aibu to think this is weird thing to do for a kids nativity costume?

Not particularly. (As in not a particularly weird thing to do).

Stresa22 · 28/11/2023 18:44

Maybe that’s what the child wanted and they had a good reason to go along with it.

10HailMarys · 28/11/2023 18:46

I cannot begin to imagine why you’d give a shit what someone else’s kid wore in a nativity play.

Prinnny · 28/11/2023 18:49

The more extra the better in my opinion for Christmas 💅🏻

SallyWD · 28/11/2023 18:49

I don't think it's that bizarre. You can buy Christmas light necklaces these days. I've often seen people wearing lights.

SpringingJoy · 28/11/2023 18:52

I can see why you would for say, a star, fairy, angel...seems fitting with the costume. If they've just covered a random shepherd in fairy lights though then yes that does seem a bit odd!

Headband · 28/11/2023 18:55

Was the child meant to be a Christmas tree?

Mrsjayy · 28/11/2023 18:56

maybe they were supposed to be Christmas cheer or something come on a kids nativity is hardly the National Theatre. What was your kid wearing?

Venomous · 28/11/2023 19:05

You Brits. God forbid you suspect someone might, inadvertently or consciously, stand out from the crowd. It really is a cultural crime.

Probably the child was playing a Christmas tree, as the teachers tried to figure out more background roles than ‘extra shepherds’, ‘extra sheep’, ‘villagers who live near the inn’ etc.

ElaineMBenes · 28/11/2023 20:43

Sounds ace 🤷🏼‍♀️

Blanca87 · 28/11/2023 20:44

Referring to a child as background character is really, really weird.

NotToYou · 28/11/2023 20:52

If it made the kid happy I don't see the problem.

Screamingabdabz · 28/11/2023 20:55

Bit early for a nativity yet… 🤔

savoycabbage · 28/11/2023 20:56

The randomness of the costumes is a part of the nativity play experience.

Other more professional theatrical productions are available elsewhere.

Allfur · 28/11/2023 20:59

Sounds lovely and christmasy

Alwayswonderedwhy · 28/11/2023 21:03

Sounds great. All part of the fun and would bring a smile to most people's faces.

N4ish · 28/11/2023 21:04

Sounds like my kind of nativity! Classic last minute costume choice by that kid’s parent or teacher.

Doodledeedum · 28/11/2023 21:11

Maybe the parents aim was exactly what you got. You noticed their child who was a 'background' character - job done!

CranfordScones · 28/11/2023 21:13

...and glory shone around.

He was playing the part of the glory. It's a rather abstract part, not often cast.

l not let my kid be Joseph ill show them ! 😂

Cas112 · 28/11/2023 21:25

I like the sound of it tbh😂

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 28/11/2023 21:28

Let me guess, your DC was a main character and was literally outshone by this other child.

Sounds fab to me. I'm curious as to why there was a nativity this early though. Unless it was part of a light switch on I suppose

MonsteraMama · 28/11/2023 21:28

Unless you're part moth I don't really see why some fairy lights would be all that distracting?

Eenymeanymineymo · 28/11/2023 21:30

I'm struggling to understand the point of this thread! And your 'background character' mention is just yuck.

Chickychoccyegg · 28/11/2023 21:30

Oh no , how dare a young child, "a background character" in a nativity, dare to stand out!!!
This is a horrible post, suggesting that this Child should not be standing out.
Distracting and garish 😂😂😂wtf.
