Genuine weird thought since my mate’s granddad told me asylum seekers get housed in 5 star hoteos

What would actually happen if I, British born citizen, returned from holiday on a boat to bypass immigration and claimed to be an asylum seeker, would they even know? When would I expect my 5 star hotel 🧐🧐😏

Sounds like great replacement bollocks to me. Which is a racist conspiracy theory

No it doesn’t! It sounds like economics! There are vital sectors, like the care home sectors, that are heavily reliant on people from overseas to fill posts. That’s not ‘replacement’, it’s that they can’t find enough UK citizens who are willing to do these jobs!

Or for more specialized jobs, like health jobs in the NHS, the government has completely failed in its recruitment strategy, meaning staff are retiring without there being enough younger staff coming in to fill posts. Hence again a need to recruit overseas. Again, NOT replacement.

How does them keeping people waiting for years for an asylum decision fit in with your theory? And not letting them work, or even putting them into training, while waiting for a decision? And how about shipping all the Albanians back to Albania? Is it just dark-skinned people they want for workers?

TravelledRoad · 27/11/2023 18:05

The ones in London near me are hideous basic hotels. Turned into hostels really. Rife with drug and alcohol use. Only £8 per adult to live on a week so they have to eat the food provided which is inedible and samey. Not a life of luxury at all. There are frightened law-abiding families living there in cramped conditions trying to look after their kids. I know because I work in mental health.

If elsewhere, others have better accommodation then I am glad to hear it. I would not wish that life on anyone for over a couple of weeks. Never mind months and months.

Oh for goodness sake! The hard of understanding are out in force today!

Firstly what I said was not a theory, it’s a simple fact. I worked in planning and strategy in that area for many years so I know what I am talking about.

Secondly, if you actually go back and follow this discussion, you will see it was about someone claiming that saying governments used immigration to fill jobs in the UK was a statement of Great Replacement Theory. Which I hope you can see is a completely and utterly bonkers argument. So I wasn’t responding about asylum seekers at all.

12345onceIcaughta · 27/11/2023 18:16

However amusing you were trying to be, it’s not something to joke about at all.

12345onceIcaughta · 27/11/2023 18:17

And saying your posting to cheer yourself up is pretty disgusting.

Really?? It’s pretty mainstream comedy to parody and mock the views of people you disagree with.

I take it you never laugh at jokes about Tory policies or politicians then? Never laugh at jokes about people’s sexist/ racist or homophobic views? Never laughed at jokes about Trump?

Or have you just been so quick to rush to judgement you completely failed to understand the post?

Silly mistake for me to assume you're talking about asylum seekers on a thread about asylum seekers.

You were actually responding to someone who'd replied to Addicted2Kale, who'd said in their previous post:

"Also, I'm fed up of reading how I must be compassionate about their heroic quests to flee the war torn, third world apocalypse that is France. This is all rubbish.

"All political parties are waving them in because (partially) of lower European immigration and our birth rate is decreasing."

And was clearly referring to asylum seekers.

So who's 'hard of understanding'?

SoMuchSimpler · 27/11/2023 18:25

@Speedygonzales78 Do you think they're using the 4 star facilities then? Relaxing around the pool being served free cocktails maybe?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/11/2023 18:27

I think people are misreading the OP’s post. She’s obviously making fun of the fact that some think that. Which does beg the why don’t they get into a boat if they think it’s such an easy life!

SleepingBagMummy · 27/11/2023 18:32

I know someone who worked in one of these hotels, so I do have some correct knowledge

My question would be
If approx 80,000 people apply for asylum in UK per year
Where would you provide accommodation ?
Tax payers money paying for accommodation, food, basic services

Good Lord! You can go back and see for yourself the actual post I was responding to. Trying to drag in previous posts by someone else in a desperate attempt to discredit me is a bit weak. . If someone has quoted a post, that is, rather obviously, what they are responding to and that alone.

The simple truth is that you, like so many on this thread, have been so eagerly gleeful at the opportunity to rush to judgement, that even when what you thought I was saying clearly made no sense in the context of asylum seekers, as you so adroitly pointed out in your post, that did not cause you to pause to check the context of my response. but instead delightedly ran headfirst into a snarky and judgemental post that you fondly imagined made you look both clever and good.

Perhaps a bit less ego and a bit more of a pause before acting would be advisable in future.

Have you ever stayed in a Cedar Court? It isn't actually 4 star. It's barely a 2 star.

So now people are conflating refugees with the government recruiting overseas thanks to Brexit.

I hate the tories as much as anyone but even Im sure they’re not actually DOING the smuggling

But the Tories know we need immigrants, we have record levels of immigration and yet they have been peddling anti-immigrant hate for years.

And stupid people like OP's mate's grandad believe it.

SoMuchSimpler · 27/11/2023 18:56

@Lightatwinter Let me spell it out for you a bit more clearly:

Addicted2Kale: "Also, I'm fed up of reading how I must be compassionate about their heroic quests to flee the war torn, third world apocalypse that is France. This is all rubbish." This post obviously refers to asylum seekers.

Addicted2KAle: "I am not arguing whether "uncontrolled" immigration is right or wrong. It's Irrelevant. I am saying it's government policy to increase immigration, irrespective of who's in power, because our birth rate and worker base is decreasing." Continues the conversation and therefore also refers to asylum seekers.

Begsthequestion: "Sounds like great replacement bollocks to me. Which is a racist conspiracy theory". Continues the conversation without changing the subject from asylum seekers.

Lightatwinter: "No it doesn’t! It sounds like economics! There are vital sectors, like the care home sectors, that are heavily reliant on people from overseas to fill posts. That’s not ‘replacement’, it’s that they can’t find enough UK citizens who are willing to do these jobs!" Your response.

Perhaps I am 'hard of understanding' because I can't see where, in the context of a thread about asylum seekers, the subject was changed from asylum seekers to general immigration. Maybe it was just in your imagination?

It’s not very clearly, or amusingly, phrased as a joke.

And regardless, it attracts all the ‘they want to come here, taking our hotels, enjoying the high life on the taxpayer’ type posters.

TheThingIsYeah · 27/11/2023 19:12

@Begsthequestion

This government hates immigrants. I don't know why you can't see that.

If the government hates immigrants, they hide it well.

Net migration to the UK was 745,000 in 2022. Roughly the size of Leeds. In ONE YEAR.

But yeah, evil Tories etc.

Glipsy · 27/11/2023 19:20

Crazy ain’t it. You’d almost think it’s nothing to do with immigration and just about making people believe there’s someone coming to steal their jobs and their wimmin and have it better than them, so you can then act like you’ll protect them

Ponoka7 · 28/11/2023 18:34

SoMuchSimpler · 27/11/2023 17:32

Why is it racist to point out the level of accommodation they are given? Or that they get more to live on than many British people, especially those let down by the disability benefits system?

Neither is true.

It is when single people are on £368 a month and have water, electricity, TV licence, bus fares etc to pay. I know people in desperate poverty situations, especially those who have been unemployed. Because of the bedroom tax we've got housing issues/homeless because of a lack of affordable accommodation in Liverpool. But it's taken for asylum seekers to be caught up in the homelessness for it to make the guardian. Are local news covered a mother and toddler sleeping in her car because of a lack of hostel places.
As for British people not wanting the jobs, they can't afford to take them because Universal credit does not support work. It was said when it was at white paper level that it wouldn't, but it was pushed through anyway. Under 21's living at home can't take jobs because the parents housing benefit is compromised.

bellac11 · 28/11/2023 18:40

An adult child working and living at home would pay keep, so it wouldnt affect the parents overall because the money coming in from their adult working child would replace the HB which is deducted. As it should do

If they're in a hostel or hotel with meals provided they get £9.58 per week.

If they're somewhere where they have to provide the food they get £47.39 per week.

The accommodation they're provided with is generally no better than the worst hotels the homeless are put up in.

Just because the Tories have made living conditions shite for those at the bottom of the ladder there's no need for people to get jealous of what people with even less are getting.

I agree. However we can't give to asylum seekers while the standards of living are so low for many. Or we will get riots, attacks and scenes like those in Dublin. People are caught up in poverty traps and benefit traps in ways that many on here just will not understand. If you them champion the cause of newly arrived groups of people, you are going to get a backlash. If you constantly repeat incorrect information, you will get people answering that. Councils are handing tents out to British citizens who are homeless, even in this weather. Our housing issues across the NW have been caused by policies. The Guardian has decided to focus on the plight of asylum seekers, without mentioning the wider issues, how Liverpool having to accept so many has impacted on the existing population etc etc.
