Botox in the School Raffle?!

Bartlebum · 27/11/2023 14:08

One of the prizes in the kids primary school raffle is a voucher for 50% off Botox! I am interested to know your opinions and if this an appropriate prize for a raffle (not mentioning it's a rubbish prize as it's only half the cost!)

It’s unusual but I’d love it.

It’s better than my recent prize of ‘£5 off X restaurant when you spend £40 or more.’

Yeah, that’s not even a great offer, never mind a prize 😂.

Needmorelego · 27/11/2023 14:21

Yeah it will probably have been donated by a local company or a parent does it as their job and has donated it.
My daughter's primary was always like this. Vouchers for half price local restaurants/hair salons/beauty places etc.
Even half price I couldn't have afforded them so I never bought a raffle ticket. I suggested more modest prizes one year - but it didn't happen.

Great strategy from the businesses! Looks generous because they have donated something but they will not be out of pocket as people will very likely not use it.

anon2134 · 27/11/2023 15:05

God I would love that

bombastix · 27/11/2023 15:08

Ew. Where is this??

ActDottie · 27/11/2023 15:12

It’s not something I’d want to win but can see why some people may value this.

It's a regulated medicine, I don't see how this can be legal

Yes, this would be deemed advertising a prescription-only medicine, which is illegal.

Lyricallie · 27/11/2023 15:14

Oh I would like that. Loads of people I know have started getting it.

OhpoorMe · 27/11/2023 15:17

Most people DO NOT use it. There's only 1m sessions a year, so if you divide that by two sessions a year, that's 500000 people a year in the UK. For comparison, the female population of 30-50 is 17.5million people, so that's what, less than 3% of middle aged women. And actually when you consider how many have it outside of that age group, or men etc, it's much lower!

Awaits someone telling me my maths is wrong :D

The donator is a mum at the school that offers Botox.

seems like she’s using the raffle as a business opportunity.
seeing the winner would still have to pay half and could (theoretically) become a repeat customer…

That is a bit unfortunate.

Skintdancemum · 27/11/2023 14:18

@KvotheTheBloodless i would have thought the opposite, that most people of a certain age do use it!

Really?

That's what I thought too.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 27/11/2023 15:39

The best raffle prize I've ever won was an afternoon 'alpaca experience'.

Also a £250 Pets at Home gift card.

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 27/11/2023 15:42

A discount is not a prize.

And I'm really not OK with things like botox being normalised, certainly not within schools. What was ever wrong with some bottles of booze and smelly sets?

Lightatwinter · 27/11/2023 15:43

Christmasapple · 27/11/2023 14:15

Perhaps it’s indicative of the area our school is in but we frequently have vouchers for a tattoo. I’d much prefer the Botox!

I'd prefer the tattoo!

Wishitsnows · 27/11/2023 15:45

I can’t see a problem with it

But some people dont drink / have allergies to smelly sets / are dairy free so no chocolate / are gluten free so no cake / allergies in general.

It's not one size fits all and it's a school fundraiser, stick a tenner in the pot and be done with

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/11/2023 15:50

Where do you live? I'd say most people DO use Botox, but I wish I lived in an area where it hadn't become the norm so I don't feel wrinkly for not using it.

Seriously? Most people where you live use Botox?! I think I know of only 2 people who do, and they aren't people in my social circle. I live in a village in Cumbria. On the rare occasion I go to Manchester or London, I can't believe how many women have had obvious work done, or have immobile foreheads or huge puffy lips. They look very odd.

As a 50-something Londoner, I can say that two out of my group of 10 close university friends uses Botox. We talk about it all the time and one of us is actually a consultant dermatologist who does Botox. So we are very open and honest about it as she jokingly touts for business. I don’t think the majority are having Botox, both from knowing my friends and looking around, but who knows.

Quite. Organising a school fundraising raffle is a nightmare these days. Going round beggjng for prizes is a thankless task, and whatever you procure, someone will tell you you’re doing it wrong. But do they want to get involved? No. Op, what did you donate to the raffle?

Iamacatslave · 27/11/2023 16:08

Do you live in Surrey?

Iwanttheraintostop · 27/11/2023 16:13

One year we had a discount on local estate agent fees as a raffle prize - I mean how rubbish is that?!

Tabitha005 · 27/11/2023 16:44

I'm only 50 but there's so much about 'modern life' that either astounds, perplexes or outright mystifies me. Half-price botox in the school raffle is one of 'em.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/11/2023 16:56

Same here @Tabitha005. Most of my family, friends and workmates are what I call 'normal people' who I'd confidently say almost none have Botox or any other 'work' done on their faces.

Which means that any time I go out to places like the local shopping centre (rare), I spend a lot of time thinking how odd a lot of people look - the ones with sharpie eyebrows, pillow lips, fake tan and botox. The fact that people spend huge sums of money and probably a lot of time (to me, managing to keep on top of getting a haircut, plus dentist, optician and 6 monthly blood pressure check for HRT patches is verging on too much) making themselves look so odd is especially baffling.

But thanks to the PP who posted some stats that prove that far from 'most people' have Botox.

@Iwanttheraintostop that wins for me 😂😂

Tabitha005 · 27/11/2023 17:15

@BarbaraofSeville - glad I'm not alone! The homogenisation of 'beauty' is utterly baffling to me and young women of 18 and 19 getting botox and fillers even more so - half price in a raffle or not!

One of the raffle prizes at a ball I went to a few weeks ago was a week in an apartment in Malaga - no flights, just use of a dingy-looking apartment in what looked like a sort of Guantanamo-style concrete compound from the photos. It went for £1,000! I mean, great for the charity, but I bet the 'winner' (who looked like they wouldn't dirty their shoes on anything less than the exalted marble floors of a seven-star hotel) never set foot in it.
