To think that I might kill someone?

Sooo, Xmas cakes are in the oven. Feeling quite pleased with myself and tackling the washing up only to find that the Kilner jar that the wine soaked fruit were in has a 3” hole!

This was only evident when it was taking a long time to fill the jar, to give it a soak then wash. I lifted it up and turned it round to find water running out.

I’ve found what looks about half of the missing piece of glass but wonder if the rest is in the cake?!

Am I likely to bump someone off with a slice of xmas cake? 🤔

How much do you like (or dislike) your Christmas guests?

Cello60 · 25/11/2023 13:35

Arightoldcarryabag · 25/11/2023 12:36

I guess the real question is how much do you like your family?
I can definitely see an argument for serving this up to the in-laws if they don't behave during the main Christmas meal.

Yup and if @Maggiethecat is married to Brick and her father in law is Big Daddy, then the argument is a strong one.

Nannyfannybanny · 25/11/2023 13:36

Never mind the glass! You are unreasonable making a Christmas cake now! Very latest would be September, add booze weekly. My MIL used to make a Christmas cake for DH marzipan and royal icing, one for me with fruit nut glazing. They both weighed over 2kg. I had a slice, took it to work to share. She put these frills round the edge, with Christmas scenes with DRESSMAKING PINS, nearly had a nasty incident one year!

changedusername190 · 25/11/2023 13:46

no don't risk it. i cut my mouth to shreds on pieces of glass that had come out of a pyrex jug years ago. it had been used to serve custard and it involved lots of hospital appointments as the glass didn't show up on x-rays.

2jacqi · 25/11/2023 14:24

@Maggiethecat how many cakes are in the oven??? you really need to shell out for the ingredients again and that wont be cheap! as @Catsfrontbum christmas cake ice cream sounds a good idea! at least you can hunt for the glass!

Denimdenimdenim · 25/11/2023 14:24

Oh no!

I'm sorry, OP, but I would be binning it.

Such a shame

Mirabai · 25/11/2023 14:27

I know someone who almost died eating quite a small piece of glass so I’m very sorry but the whole lot needs to be binned.

I can recommend Sainsbury’s Christmas cake slices though. 🤓

Sidebeforeself · 25/11/2023 14:31

Can you post it to the nearest prison, so an inmate could use the shard to escape, instead of the usual file in a cake? I mean, it would be a shame to waste it…

UnfriendMe · 25/11/2023 14:31

Glass and Xmas cake not a great combination, but can you really make an Xmas cake worse?

HoHoHoliday · 25/11/2023 14:31

It could be like a game of Russian roulette at your dining table. All take it in turns to have a bit of cake until one of you gets the missing shards of glass 😂
Unless of course the shards have scattered themselves amongst all of the cake. You'd end up on the news like that woman in Australia who killed her relatives with dodgy mushrooms.
Bin the cake. Sorry though, all that effort and expense ☹️

RudsyFarmer · 25/11/2023 14:32

Chuck the cake out for the birds and go and buy a lovely luxury one. Then try again next year.

OneTC · 25/11/2023 14:32

Sell it as a much higher stakes version of the coin in the pudding game.

Russian roulade

Why do I take so long to type 😅

Allwelcone · 25/11/2023 14:35

Bloody Kilner jars are crap, maybe you can sue them for vast amounts of cash!
I was sterilising one recently with just boiled water and it broke. I thought they were meant for that kind of treatment?

Maggiethecat · 25/11/2023 14:36

Thanks for some of the laughs!

Dh got back home and I told him he’d have to bin them - would be too painful for me to perform the act! To which he replied he’ll eat them!

A 23” and 19 “ - that’s a lot of cake! 😂

@Allwelcone - now that I think about it I think I had poured boiled water in the jar before soaking the fruit; crack likely developed then.

You'll have to get your stories straight of how you might play it in a&e. I'm sure, we knew there might be glass but gave it a whirl anyway would go down like a lead balloon

I did something a bit like this once. I used a tumbler to cut perfectly round biscuits as I didn't have a cutter that shape. Glass splintered didn't it and I didn't notice straight away. Whole lot had to go in the bin. Quite an 'involved' recipe too. I was fumming fuming!

Just picturing the birds stumbling about from the boozy cake, never mind glass shards!

That’s a real shame. Can you smash the cake up once baked and turn it into Christmas Cake ice cream

So the shards will be smaller, and the death quicker?! 😮

Yet my Ikea jar (had 2 lots of soaked fruit) treated the same looks fine!
