Nursery painting 2-4 yo nails

Vanillalatte1 · 24/11/2023 18:10

My 4 year old DS returned from nursery with his nails painted and said it was varnish day at nursery and that the teachers were painting the kids nails. Is this normal? The kids are between 2 - 4 years old. They seem a bit young to me.

Wouldn't bother me at all if nursery painted DS' nails at that age. It's fun and it's easy to get off, especially if it is one made for toddlers.

LadyMacB · 24/11/2023 19:24

I don’t like it, and I wouldn’t do it, but if this happened I’m not sure I’d massively care. Easily removed.

Growlybear83 · 24/11/2023 19:26

I would have been very angry if anyone had painted my daughter's nails at that age. I never slowed any form of makeup until she started secondary school and I find it quite unpleasant to see little children wearing nail varnish and other makeup on their delicate skin.

So surprised at these answers. I loved the fact my kids got up to all sorts at nursery. Playing in the rain, the messy play with paint and who knows what else. The access to all the toys that most people would not have at home. They came home covered in all sorts!

They also experienced different adults with different thoughts and ideas on what to do with the toddlers.

I’d have been really sad if what they did at Nursery reflected exactly what they did at home. How dull!

This ! What actual harm will it do ?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 24/11/2023 19:33

Peel off stuff wouldn't bother me - but I wouldn't put it on someone else's child without checking first, and definitely not in a professional capacity.

Real stuff would have upset me when DD was small, she had very sensitive skin and prone to really bad reactions to stuff. I wouldn't have wanted to be getting acetone / remover on her skin.

Ketzele · 24/11/2023 18:55

I honestly couldn't get het up about this. No child ever entered a life of crime through early exposure to nail varnish.

@Ketzele

who said it would??

@Vanillalatte1

if it was the child friendly stuff I wouldn't mind, but I wouldn't be happy with adult nail polish. Too many chemicals for such young absorbent fingers/nails & that's before you even look at the remover.

i wouldn't 'go mad' but I'd ask them not to do it with adult nail polish in the future.

Poorlymumma · 24/11/2023 19:34

It wouldn't bother me but I would find it surprising.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 24/11/2023 19:38

I don't think my child doing things that I wouldn't think of is a benefit. If I've not thought of it, I don't see the benefit.

Oh if only we were all blessed with your superior wisdom.

Christmaste · 24/11/2023 19:39

I wouldn’t be that pleased if my son came back with painted nails from anywhere tbh.

😂

DS' nursery come up with plenty of things that I wouldn't. The horror!

MagAmberson · 24/11/2023 19:42

Both of my children, boy and girl, had their nails painted in crèche. I honestly can't see the harm, sometimes they have had facepaint which I found to be very stubborn to wash off, there's not much difference to me 🤔My 5 year old girl likes to get hers painted still but my son never showed any interest once he started school.

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 24/11/2023 19:43

It's just a bit of fun, surely?

Amyalexandrer · 24/11/2023 19:45

Oh good lord, nail painting? Without permission? On a child? On a BOY??
<Faints>

QueenOfThorns · 24/11/2023 19:46

Has anyone on this thread actually ever used the ‘child friendly’ nail varnish? My DD had some and it just ended up all over the towel the first time she washed and dried her hands! I preferred the real stuff, it was far less messy Grin

Marblessolveeverything · 24/11/2023 19:47

As the parent of a poor unfortunate child who ended up requiring steroids to deal with reactions to chemicals, how on earth can a business not run a risk assessment identifying allergies and ask parents for permission.

To me it's basic 101 logic.

Amyalexandrer · 24/11/2023 19:47

In all seriousness I can't believe people are getting het up about this 😂
It just a fun arty activity, like painting paper, drawing, making a mess, it's just fun. I hope you don't complain and ruin it for all the normal light-hearted folk.

Dacadactyl · 24/11/2023 18:23

@FranticHare I said I wouldn't allow my 2-4 Yr old DD to have painted nails. In my opinion, boys don't paint their nails, end of. If when they're old enough they decide to paint their nails, then they can crack on.

I don't think my child doing things that I wouldn't think of is a benefit. If I've not thought of it, I don't see the benefit.

Why don't boys paint their names end of? . End of isn't an argument or a reason, why shouldn't they if they want to, what do you think will happen if they do?

Their penises will fall off, clearly.

MagAmberson · 24/11/2023 19:52

@Marblessolveeverything
Would parents already inform childcare facilities of allergies? I have

Morechocmorechoc · 24/11/2023 19:53

Is it the kid friendly peel stuff? That's not so bad. If it's adult nail varnish that stinks and requires the harsh chemicals to remove I'd be making a formal complaint. Any child with asthma ir allergies could be seriously harmed by that.

Morechocmorechoc · 24/11/2023 19:55

@MagAmberson no, most people wouldn't think to include the issues from smell or touch to things like nail varnish!

BIossomtoes · 24/11/2023 19:58

GirrlCrush · 24/11/2023 18:40

Oh god, I knew the mumsnet pearl clutchers would be all over this when I saw the title!

😂

Coffeerum · 24/11/2023 19:59

It really wouldn’t bother me. No different to face paint.
I would have more of a problem with the nursery not separating the ages enough. 2 and 4 is too much of a range imo and would be in separate rooms in my nursery.

CuteAsDuck · 24/11/2023 20:00

I can not imagine feeling even mildly perturbed by this.

WhenSheWasBadshewasawesome · 24/11/2023 20:01

No, I don't think it's the right move for a nursery.
You have to be so careful about allergic reactions, that's why face painters need to be insured and have a good hygiene system, allergic reactions can be devastating and consent must be obtained so you cannot be liable.

Also, nail painting requires 1:1 supervisors for an extended period of time for each child so I'd be worried about their ratios and if they were adequately covered whilst this was going on. It's all very well saying what's the harm, but if a child choked for example, or came to harm and upon investigation it was found your ratio was off due to this you'd be up shit creek.

It doesn't meet the eyfs standards so is a massive waste of time as doesn't come under any area of learning (not creativity because an adult is doing it of course)

And just feels like forcing a superficial adult activity on children. What's the point? Agenda?
