Nursery painting 2-4 yo nails

Vanillalatte1 · 24/11/2023 18:10

My 4 year old DS returned from nursery with his nails painted and said it was varnish day at nursery and that the teachers were painting the kids nails. Is this normal? The kids are between 2 - 4 years old. They seem a bit young to me.

@FranticHare I said I wouldn't allow my 2-4 Yr old DD to have painted nails. In my opinion, boys don't paint their nails, end of. If when they're old enough they decide to paint their nails, then they can crack on.

I don't think my child doing things that I wouldn't think of is a benefit. If I've not thought of it, I don't see the benefit.

End of what? Your own dogshit opinion?

In the realms of face paint or glitter hair spray.

When I taught 4 year olds I wouldn't have used glitter hair spray and would have needed parental permission for face painting.

It's very different doing these things as a parent to them doing it at nursery.

Dorriethelittlewitch · 24/11/2023 18:49

Both my 2 have come home from preschool with toddler friendly nail polish on their nails in the past. I didn't have an issue with it.

Apparently they asked the children and they said yes.

This whole thread has really brought out the closet homophobes.

Boys don't paint their nails.... Oh my god can someone explain that to my 3 yo twins who love to colour in their nails with felt tip pens. Gosh if they knew toddler nail paint existed they'd be in heaven.

Funnily enough, discussing this out loud, 8 yo son tuned in enough to ask if HE could have some nail varnish if I'm getting the twins some.

Are they no longer boys?
Am I a shit mother?
Are you wrong?

Emeraldrings · 24/11/2023 18:51

I wouldn't mind as a parent but as a nursery nurse I wouldn't think of doing this. If I did think of it I'd get parents permission first

Dacadactyl · 24/11/2023 18:51

@SleepingStandingUp there is such a thing as a difference of opinion, you know.

Hubblebubble · 24/11/2023 18:52

@YourNameGoesHere there's a very popular children's barber/hairdresser (no adults, it's the usp) that goes the extra mile to help children have a fantastic experience and they use glitter hairspray for children that want it. It's especially good with autistic children (provides noise cancelling headphones) and those who are afraid of getting their hair cut.

Which is great but I still wouldn't use it on children in my care.

As I said what I would do as a parent and what I would do with children at work are very different.

well now you know two who do, so hence forth can live your life declaring boys do paint their nails. Happy to help.

I honestly couldn't get het up about this. No child ever entered a life of crime through early exposure to nail varnish.

My little one's only 2 but she's already such a girly girl, I can't remember the last time her nails WEREN'T painted tbh! Getting your nails done together is such a nice way to spend time together no matter the age, I'd say go with it hun and see it as a positive xx

But that's mumsnet for you!

@YourNameGoesHere not even in the context of dressing up/school play/school concert?

Keeva2017 · 24/11/2023 19:03

For heaven sakes it’s painting their nails, same as glitter tattoos and face paint. My kids were over the moon when nursery did this.

Not without parental permission no. I don't think that would be an unusual approach for those working in early years.

Pythonesque · 24/11/2023 19:12

I'm another who would not have been happy, for either my daughter or my son at nursery age. I didn't have nail polish remover in the house either so the "it's easy to remove" brigade would have been wrong.

Does everything you do have to be of benefit to you? Do you do nothing fun and frivolous? Heaven for Eden’s people might want to have fun!

GirrlCrush · 24/11/2023 19:16

It's a skill! Getting them to sit still long enough for it to dry.... well done nursery!

Torganer · 24/11/2023 19:19

I find this very odd. We are constantly sent messages to give permission for things, face paint, going to the park, etc. I can’t believe you didn’t have to give consent.

I also doubt they would use proper nail varnish, it would be the wash off stuff.
