To think dishwasher fans are part of a cult

I look at people who like dishwashers the same way as I might someone who lives isolated from society, wearing a tin foil hat, while hanging on the every word of madman - with a mix of confusion and pity. Why do people like them? You still have to scrape the waste food off, rinse the plate, then put it in the rack. With hand washing this is where it ends. With a dishwasher you then have to put up with the horrible wafts of smell that come out every time you add a utensil until you finally have a full load/have run out of everything when you can turn it on. Then you have to unload the bastard. Don't get me started on the slops of cold or hot water you get from upside down mugs. So what is the appeal?!

We’ve had a D/W for over 30 years. Never have I rinsed the plates before loading.
Over the years we’ve hosted many parties. Oh the joy of loading & reloading all the plates etc etc.
What a waste of time washing up is, plus all those soggy tea towels.
Each to their own but I have always loved my dishwashers & would rather the washing machine breaks down. Can always get a service wash.

RomeoOscarXrayXray · 24/11/2023 18:08

Never rinse. Only scrape. Not that there's much left on plates anyway (hate food waste)

Dishwashers use less water than hand washing so better for environment

The use less fuel to heat the water but get it hotter so that items are practically sterilised also better to use less fuel for environment.

You can hide away dirty dishes in the machine and run a full load rather than doing lots of little hand washes during the day (wasteful of fuel/water) OR not have a pile of dishes waiting until a bigger wash

I reckon it saves me 40 minutes a day, easily.

It never smells, don't have the slops of water you refer to (are you loading yours properly?)

We can agree to disagree!

Love my dishwasher. Empty it in the morning, takes me as long as it takes the kettle to boil (what can I say, I'm a pro). Then through the day load as you go, so never any dirty dishes lying around and then before bed whack it on.

Occasionally, if we haven't eaten much at home we might not put it on for 2 days but it doesn't get stinky.

Ours broke recently and living without it for 2 weeks until the new one was repaired was awful.

I hate when I go on hol and they don’t have a dishwasher. What a hard life i lead 😂

Tree12 · 24/11/2023 18:10

My dishwasher broke and it was hell! Washing up takes SO MUCH LONGER. I don’t care what anyone says.

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 24/11/2023 17:29

I don't rinse plates before putting them in the dishwasher but I do scrape. I thought you needed to get rid of any lumps of food before putting in the dishwasher?

Presumably you'd also scrape a stray potato or the crusts of a kid's sandwich or something into the bin before you put a plate into a sink full of washing up water, too, though?

You don't have to scrape off every grain of rice or a single pea before you put a plate into a dishwasher. Only anything reasonably large.

oldfatandreadyforarevamp · 24/11/2023 18:16

I never rinse, just scrape the plates.

I am also disabled, and have issues with my grip and wet plates and glasses and me do not mix.

Interesting that you view it as a cult. Do you consider washing machines in the same way?

newnamethanks · 24/11/2023 18:18

Hate them. Fortunately I live alone so dish washing is minimal.

Having seen what dogs eat and where they put their tongues I would not eat off plates they had licked, even if they went in a dishwasher hotter than the surface of the sun.

Thats perfectly ok because I won't be inviting you to dinner, and anyone who does eat here is of the same mindset as me - that dishwashered is clean enough, that doggy pre-wash is perfectly acceptable.

What the fuck is there to hate about a dishwasher???

The residual smell some people experience (I don’t myself) is to do with the lemon scented tablets apparently, some people really don’t get on with them so they are best avoided.

we dont use lemon tablets or rinse aid after we learned this, plus it was causing rainbowing on drinking glasses and our good stainless steel pans - we are in a very hard water area, advised to use white vinegar every wash as a softener which we do - just a squirt gets the dirt

TheKeatingFive · 24/11/2023 18:40

Exactly. What the hell?

oldfatandreadyforarevamp · 24/11/2023 18:43

Yeah I hate washing machines.

You still have to empty pockets and make sure there are no tissues.

Why do people use washing machines and not just hand wash things the proper way?

WTF?

Scalottia · 24/11/2023 18:46

My dishwasher never smells OP. You're doing it wrong.

Also if you have big chunks of food to scrape off, do you not also do that before washing up? Or do you just let it float around in the washing up water?

Peachpicklepie · 24/11/2023 18:50

Ok, I might (possibly) have been living under a rock. Follow up questions:

  1. The water slop I'm talking about is when you have a mug upside down to wash and then there is residual water in the upturned base of the mug. Is there a way to avoid this other than being careful?
  2. We never towel dry dishes - just wait for them to be less wet and put away. A lot of posters mention running overnight; if you run in the day how long do you need to leave it for them to be dry?

I'm lazy with this too - I don't check pockets and take the hit when a tissue slips through the (admittedly lax) net

I never have water slop in my mugs and the only things that are ever wet are tupperware containers and I just dry them with a tea towel (I don't use plastic dishes much). I open the dishwasher, let the steam out and then just empty it the next time I walk past.

I have contact dermatitis to washing up liquid and I'm allergic to rubber gloves. I also can't grip properly. And broke plates and glasses on the regular. A dishwasher has changed my life.

Either buy your mugs from Ikea because they have little gaps for the water to run out, or when the dishwasher has finished, turn over anything that's collected water, or pull out and put either on the draining board or on a tea towel.

Anything washed in ours is more or less dry when it's finished. We then use the pots out of the dishwasher and keep the washing up aside to put in it. Somewhere between it being full of clean pots and the next batch of washing up starting to mount up (ours goes on about 4-5 times a week) one of us will empty it and start the next load but, I don't think it's particularly helpful to load as you go as it's often done inefficiently and you have to shift things around to get more in, which I hate. Therefore I prefer to see what needs to go in before it's loaded.

I often wonder what people who can't see the benefit of a dishwasher eat. Do they never cook?

Definitely. Does anyone seriously think Jesus did not use a dishwasher when feeding the five thousand?

If the dishwasher goes off before I go to bed I leave the door open and water dries overnight. If putting clean dishes away immediately I use I dishcloth/towel and just pat the cup to soak up the water. I do it while it’s still upturned in the machine so no dripping water

Anjo2011 · 24/11/2023 19:02

I scrape and very occasionally rinse. I love that there’s never washing up sitting in a bowl or in the sink. It’s put straight into the dishwasher so my kitchen is always tidy!

I do usually scrape off every single pea/bean etc. I just don't like the thought of things like that sitting in the drainer bit of the dishwasher (and I have found the odd bean or pea if someone other than myself has loaded the dishwasher!). Perhaps I don't need to be so thorough.

Would just hate the drain to get clogged up and my dishwasher to stop being as effective as it is as the thought of having to hand wash dishes and the rest is unbearable!

I will defend my dishwasher to the death. I hate washing up with a passion. I love, cherish, clean, polish and talk to her, that's how valued she is.

My mother, on the other hand, believes owning a dishwasher is a sign of delusion and a deranged mind and possible possession by the devil himself. This is nothing compared to her views on tumble dryer owners though!

Does she kill and butcher her own meat?

the80sweregreat · 24/11/2023 19:09

I adore my dishwasher, it keeps the counters clear and things come out sparkling
Only job I dislike is putting salt in it , but once it's done it lasts a while.
I'd miss my washing machine more though.
If I had to lose one or the other it'd have to be the dishwasher , but both have their place !

CatMadam · 24/11/2023 19:23

I’d rather do ironing than wash dishes by hand, and I fucking hate ironing Wink Also, I don’t rinse the plates, that would be silly! The hygiene aspect alone is a huge plus for dishwashers- I hate going to someone’s house and seeing tea stains in cups/ smeared plates because they handwash (and aren't very good at it)- never had those issues with a dishwasher.
