To think dishwasher fans are part of a cult

I look at people who like dishwashers the same way as I might someone who lives isolated from society, wearing a tin foil hat, while hanging on the every word of madman - with a mix of confusion and pity. Why do people like them? You still have to scrape the waste food off, rinse the plate, then put it in the rack. With hand washing this is where it ends. With a dishwasher you then have to put up with the horrible wafts of smell that come out every time you add a utensil until you finally have a full load/have run out of everything when you can turn it on. Then you have to unload the bastard. Don't get me started on the slops of cold or hot water you get from upside down mugs. So what is the appeal?!

I’m with you OP 😅

Never have wanted a dishwasher.

Friends have them and they do seem to breakdown with some regularity- and what’s the point? I can wash up a lot quicker than the dishwasher 😁

you can’t count the time the dishwasher is actually running cos presumably you’re not sitting in front of it staring at it for an hour and a half waiting for it to finish, you’re off doing something else in that time.

you can’t count scraping time cos you’d have to do that whether you washed by hand or used the dishwasher.

you can barely even count the loading of it cos if you wash by hand you still have to pile dishes by the sink then put them in the sink, with a few changes of water if you’ve got a lot of stuff.

so you have to think, are you really, honestly saving time standing at the sink washing and scrubbing each item then rinsing the suds off, putting on draining board then drying them with a tea towel? Because that is exactly what the dishwasher is doing until the next stage when you’re putting your dry clean items in the cupboard/drawers.

The only people I know of who don’t like dishwashers are those who eat very simple uncomplicated meals and don’t use many utensils or pans or chopping boards etc. so they put something (meat or fish) under the grill, have 2 pans on the go for potatoes and veg, no sauce, just put it out in the plates. Easy enough to wash up. If you’re any kind of cook doing fancier meals then it’s a dishwasher all the way.

I so want to be in the cult! But no dishwasher in my house, I absolutely hate hand washing.

I love my dishwasher so much that when the old one broke, we had to go and collect another one the same day!Grin

We didn't have much space for it, so my partner wanted to put it in the utility room. I said that if we were getting one I wanted it to be as easy to use as possible (still skeptical at this point) so we got a counter one but put it in a under counter cupboard.

Welcome to the darkside OP! When we got our DW our utility bills fell. I used to wash up by hand using very hot water heated by gas. Eco setting on our DW is excellent, can achieve very hot hygiene standards on a cold inlet.

Welcome to the club!

Hankunamatata · 16/12/2023 15:55

I view people who hand-wash the same wash.

Dishwashers are amazing couldn't live without one.

Oblomov23 · 16/12/2023 16:13

I love mine. Wanted one for years and only got in because of kitchen extension.

We don't scrape food. or barely ever scrape because everyone eats what's on their plate, and we have no food wastage, literally none each night and if there ever is any leftovers, we pack it away and take it to work the next day for lunch so none of this scraping that you mentioned.

and the rinsing? Why on earth are you rinsing?
