To think dishwasher fans are part of a cult

I look at people who like dishwashers the same way as I might someone who lives isolated from society, wearing a tin foil hat, while hanging on the every word of madman - with a mix of confusion and pity. Why do people like them? You still have to scrape the waste food off, rinse the plate, then put it in the rack. With hand washing this is where it ends. With a dishwasher you then have to put up with the horrible wafts of smell that come out every time you add a utensil until you finally have a full load/have run out of everything when you can turn it on. Then you have to unload the bastard. Don't get me started on the slops of cold or hot water you get from upside down mugs. So what is the appeal?!

I’d love a dishwasher. I spend up to an hour a day washing/drying up and hate the waste of time. When we’ve been to holiday cottages it’s been so good to just chuck everything in the dishwasher and go and do something else. Our kitchen at home is so tiny and the dirty plates and mugs stacked up on the worktop look such a mess - it’s good to be able to hide all the stuff while it’s waiting to be washed and have clean worktops. When we have family over at Christmas there isn’t even space to stack the dirty plates on our worktop and it’s a grim team effort to get it all washed up. Whenever we manage to redo our kitchen one day, I’m 100% getting a dishwasher, no matter how much space it takes up!

Reigateforever · 25/11/2023 07:29

Having two sinks, I use one to catch hand washing water. This is used to soak the daily dishes and cutlery before loading dishwasher.
I do notice my cutlery drawer does not have little bits like others do.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 25/11/2023 07:48

Hand washing water that’s full of e-coli and clostridium bacteria and all the other commensal bacteria/fungus/yeasts in the bowel that causes infections in leg wounds & uses the same antibiotic for bowel and leg infections as it’s the same bacteria?

That hand washing water? You can just use fresh water for soaking instead.

What you need is the upgraded system - Dog+ Dishwasher.

Dog deals with left overs, any pre-rinsing needed for baked on stuff, then dishwasher deals with final clean, de-germing things the dog licked.

No fuss, and if you sort out the right detergent/additives for hard water you don't get fogged up glasses or streaky stuff.

We have that upgrade!

But we've had it so long that I thought it was standard Grin

I can honestly say that our dishwasher is never smelly - and I am very sensitive to smells.

However, I admit that the periodic cleaning of the filter isn't a job for the fainthearted. How the hell it gets in that state I'll never know.

We have 5 adults in the family
1 dog and 2 cats
Our kitchen is 6m x 8m so plenty big to accomodate a dishwasher.
We don’t have a dishwasher
We don’t want one

So
Guessing
We must be sadists 🤣😀

I think people must mean masochists . . . sadists like to inflict pain on t=others, masochists enjoy pain themselves.

It makes life easier all around and saves loads of time.
Every member of the family deals with their own plate, cups and cutlery and have done since young.
There is minimal washing up by hand after every meal which is a couple of pans probably.

Yeah I hate washing machines.

You still have to empty pockets and make sure there are no tissues.

Why do people use washing machines and not just hand wash things the proper way?

WTF?

Oh!

Is that you I see when I'm out walking the dog? Down at the bank of the Tyne bashing your sheets between two flat stones?

I give you a shout next time.

Peablockfeathers · 25/11/2023 08:09

I've never heard anyone preach about them or really mention them but still, love ours! Actually gets the water up to temp and saves so much time, doesn't work out overly expensive compared to doing x loads by hand. If you stack it properly, maintain it properly etc it shouldn't have the issues you mention.

OH! THE IRONY!

hedgehoglurker · 25/11/2023 08:21

Apart from the fab IKEA mugs mentioned by a PP, you must also unload the bottom rack first. Otherwise any water collected in the base of mugs, or still sitting in the spinning arm, etc, will drip and spill onto the clean and dry items below.

TheaBrandt · 25/11/2023 08:22

Why would yo not have one? I guess if to live alone bit otherwise it’s really odd. Was awful when ours broke felt like I spent my life washing up.

TheaBrandt · 25/11/2023 08:24

They don’t have them in Italian self catering. We stayed in 3 different places this summer pricey and posh but not a dishwasher between them. Won’t make that mistake again.

C1N1C · 25/11/2023 08:28

My wife pushed for a dishwasher... I grudgingly complied. To be honest, I still don't get it. I am very economical with what dishes and pots I use so after I've made something I'll leave them to soak for an hour and then wash by hand. My wife didn't like stuff soaking so pushed for a dishwasher.

I liked doing the dishes after dinner and being done with them... now I wake up, make my coffee, and have to unload it. It's a crap start to the morning.

OneCup · 25/11/2023 08:29

I don't like dishwashers either. It's quicker to do the dishes than load/unload them.
I'm surprised people say there is no smell but perhaps all the houses I lived in had cheap models?

Frasers · 25/11/2023 08:29

I don’t do all the scraping and rinsing. Don’t get me wrong if food waste on it, like left over chunks of food , I scrape into bin, like I would if I was going to hand wash, but past that I just throw them in there, there is no smell when the door is closed, and I suffer from hypersmell. If you use rinse aid nothing is cloudy.

if the dishwasher is broken it’s a bit of a ballache, as everything needs to be washed quickly or you have dirty dishes piling up in the sink , with a dishwasher , no mess, put them in, shut the door, walk away.

travelnorth · 25/11/2023 08:36

Yeah you do not know how to use it.

HappySammy · 25/11/2023 08:43

I got a dishwasher for the first time in my life this year. I can't imagine life without one now.

I know the dishwasher smell people are talking about but we haven't experienced that. I rinse the filter under a tap once a week and it's rarely grimy. I also used a dishwasher cleaner on a hot cycle when we moved in and have a calendar reminder to do it every 3 months. So far so good. We don't rinse dishes either, just scrape leftover food into the bin.

The pets have bowls too. So need washing.
Hoping that monkey of yours likes swinging 🙃

Weirdest response I’ve ever had! Makes absolutely no sense 😂

Ermm, ours has never ever smelled.

It opens by itself and dries the dishes for 20 minutes. When it’s done they are cool and perfectly dry.

TheFlyHalfsMum · 25/11/2023 09:36

We’ve just spent a fortnight with our dishwasher broken. It has demonstrated quite how useful our bloody dishwasher is,
and how much more time actually washing and drying all the dishes takes.

Mine does not smell, as said before it’s only used at Christmas and when entertaining, but I do know what you mean about the smell. Many years ago we were house hunting and viewed a house with a malfunctioning dishwasher. Never smelt anything so horrible. All I could think of was getting out of the house. I felt so sorry for the poor vendor, god knows how many buyers that dishwasher put off.

skyeisthelimit · 25/11/2023 09:57

My dishwasher never smells but I do use a cleaner in it periodically

it’s always dry too as it’s part of the cycle.
