To think dishwasher fans are part of a cult

I look at people who like dishwashers the same way as I might someone who lives isolated from society, wearing a tin foil hat, while hanging on the every word of madman - with a mix of confusion and pity. Why do people like them? You still have to scrape the waste food off, rinse the plate, then put it in the rack. With hand washing this is where it ends. With a dishwasher you then have to put up with the horrible wafts of smell that come out every time you add a utensil until you finally have a full load/have run out of everything when you can turn it on. Then you have to unload the bastard. Don't get me started on the slops of cold or hot water you get from upside down mugs. So what is the appeal?!

Hand washing water that’s full of e-coli and clostridium bacteria and all the other commensal bacteria/fungus/yeasts in the bowel that causes infections in leg wounds & uses the same antibiotic for bowel and leg infections as it’s the same bacteria?

That hand washing water? You can just use fresh water for soaking instead.

In that posters defence, presuming hands are washed in hot water and soap bacteria etc is probably killed off at the time. It’s not the kind of water I would personally look at to try and reuse as grey water but I don’t think it’s inherently risky to use it as soaking water provided anything soaked is going to get a proper wash afterwards.

@Surroundedbyfools
Smelly dishwashers? Confidently stated by a person who doesn't own one, ironically. We've had dishwashers for over 30 years and not a smell.

@StarShipControl
Each person washing up their own crockery and cutlery?? Hope it isn't in the same grimy water

@Emotionalsupportviper I'm pondering Dishwasher User's Manual v Dishwasher Users' Manual. I suppose it comes down to whether that's an actual title on the manual. I'm favouring the latter but since you are spot on re sadist/ masochist I'll say no moreGrin Plus you made me laugh with your comment about bashing sheets on the banks of the Tyne. A very vivid image I wasn't expecting to encounter this morning!

dementedpixie · 25/11/2023 10:12

I scrape leftovers into the food waste bin but don't rinse. The detergent needs something to work on so if you rinse the plates the detergent can attack the glaze on the plates/cups instead.

I clean out the filters every so often. All you need is soapy water and a sponge.

FrozenGhost · 25/11/2023 10:14

I used to be like OP but I'm a convert. But you have to get to know your dishwasher and also get to a bit of a routine to appreciate it. You need to get a habit going of when you run it and when you unload it, and know how to stack it quickly and where best to put everything. (It's not rocket science but every dishwasher is different).

Rinsing definitely not needed. I'm in Australia and my water company, Sydney Water, currently has a campaign going telling people not to do this. It's also in the instructions of mine.

We have that upgrade!

But we've had it so long that I thought it was standard Grin

Also known in our house as the Sprocker pre-wash!

I have not read the whole thread, so apologies if it has already been mentioned… but can someone tell me proper dishwasher technique?
We are a family of 6.

Does the dishwasher go on daily ?
If yes, how many bowls/plates do you own? Breakfast, lunch dinner is a lot of plates. I usually wash the morning and afternoon ones by hand so that we have enough for dinner and then put the dishwasher on after that, but then sometimes it doesn’t seem full enough to go on 😂

Also, the eco setting lasts for 3.5 hours… which just seems too long to me.
The quick setting with pre rinse is an hour is my go to.

Sorry, I didn’t make myself clear, this is handwashing in the kitchen, more like to be extra sure before touching food not after a serious dirty job.

There are no rules or etiquette. Is a dishwasher 😂 you put it on as and when you personally wish, be it 2 plates or 10. Sure it’s wasteful if less than a full load.

we simply load ours through the day and then out on in the evening.

CatkinToadflax · 25/11/2023 11:07

The dough for this week’s sourdough bread is currently proving away happily in our dishwasher! 😄

Nowherenew · 24/11/2023 17:10

I’ve never wanted a dishwasher.

I’ve never been lazy enough for a dish washer, how long does it take to hand wash a few dishes!

I thought they were a waste of money and something that rich people had because they’re too posh to put on rubber gloves.

But I must admit that recently I keep thinking how nice it would be to not constantly have a sink full of dishes!

The thought of putting the dishes away once you’ve finished eating and then just press a button, is starting to sound quite heavenly.

I’m afraid I may go over to the dark side soon.

God, what a pathetic outlook.

silverxylophone · 25/11/2023 11:35

I hate the way everything smells when it comes out freshly washed from a dishwasher. That smell clings to everything.

TheKeatingFive · 25/11/2023 11:40

I've never understood the 'lazy' connotations. Why wouldn't you want to save yourself a boring task you don't get any satisfaction from?

I don't hand wash my clothes or beat the dust out of my carpets. I use a washing machine and a hoover. Why is this different?

islandsinthestreams · 25/11/2023 11:43

You'd hate me. I have two dishwashers.

I've had dishwashers for years. Never once have I scraped or rinsed plates to go in there.

I've never noticed a smell !!!!!

You must be doing something wrong!

Cornettoninja · 25/11/2023 11:45

Me either. Especially when it’s followed up by pointing out it needs loading/unloading. Am I lazy here or not? Grin

It’s fine either way but it can’t simultaneously be lazy to use a dishwasher and unacceptably onerous to load/unload it!

honeybeetheoneandonly · 25/11/2023 12:41

I put everything in the dishwasher. Pots and pans take lots of space esp my slow cooker but it comes out sparkly. You also don't need to pre-soak. I'm always amazed when my lasagne dish comes out crystal clear despite going in with black baked bits around the top. Love my dishwasher.

Titusgroan · 25/11/2023 12:42

YourNameGoesHere · 25/11/2023 04:32

I just don't understand why you wouldn't want one? It's quite weird to think it's somehow superior to wash dishes by hand. Presumably you have a washing machine because you recognise that washing clothes by hand is a waste of time so why doesn't the same logic apply to the dishes?

Who said it was superior
No judging here.
We chose to live our lives how we wish.
You chose your way I chose mine.
I don’t judge people unless they are causing harm.
Be who you are , don’t judge…..that’s the democratic way.

TWO DISHWASHERS!!!

😍😍😍

Noorandapples · 25/11/2023 14:20

I grew up with one and would never get one now. There were always a few things not quite clean, everything had a weird squeaky, rubbery feel to it and I swear I can taste the dishwasher smell on the food. No thanks, not for me!

😬 Oh you know what I mean… for example, I don’t want to put most of the dinner plates in the morning, but then not have enough in there to switch it on. However, if I don’t switch it on, we won’t have enough for dinner. First world problems, eh.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 25/11/2023 16:16

If we’re talking laziness I have a robo hoover too.

Bite me.
