To think dishwasher fans are part of a cult

I look at people who like dishwashers the same way as I might someone who lives isolated from society, wearing a tin foil hat, while hanging on the every word of madman - with a mix of confusion and pity. Why do people like them? You still have to scrape the waste food off, rinse the plate, then put it in the rack. With hand washing this is where it ends. With a dishwasher you then have to put up with the horrible wafts of smell that come out every time you add a utensil until you finally have a full load/have run out of everything when you can turn it on. Then you have to unload the bastard. Don't get me started on the slops of cold or hot water you get from upside down mugs. So what is the appeal?!

It’s a mind set thing. I like to consider it a drawer which washes itself.

ShirleyPhallus · 24/11/2023 15:39

You’re not using a dishwasher properly babes

You dont scrape or rinse the plates. You put them in, turn it on, forget about it.

best of all, no one is forcing you to use one. So if you want to put your hands in soapy food water multiple times a day you can do!

SouthEastCoast · 24/11/2023 15:40

Who is scraping and rinsing? I’ve had a dishwasher since I was a small child and couldn’t imagine not having one.

MarleyandMarleyWoo · 24/11/2023 15:41

How gross are your ‘hand washed’ plates if you reckon they’re clean and done after a very quick rinse (which is the absolute most people do before putting in a dishwasher ime)??
Also, you complain about unloading the dishwasher, but you have to put away clean dishes/cutlery etc regardless of how they’re washed. Your whole argument is flimsy really. Hand wash if that’s what you prefer, but it doesn’t take a genius to work out why a dishwasher can be beneficial to some people/households.

Beamur · 24/11/2023 15:41

You dispose of food waste but there's no need to rinse.
Dishwashers are also more hygienic and use less water than hand washing. Plus I hate washing up.

Dogcatmousecat · 24/11/2023 15:42

Have had dishwasher for about 30 years .Never rinse just scrape excess food off 🤷‍♀️

Comedycook · 24/11/2023 15:42

I love my dishwasher.

When it broke, life was so shit. Stuff piled up in the sink and once washed sitting on the drainer. I hated cooking knowing that every bloody utensil would have to be washed up by hand.

PhantomUnicorn · 24/11/2023 15:42

the only thing we scrape is the leftovers into the food recycling bin..

You're clearly doing it wrong. I only have had a dishwasher the last 2 years.. i do NOT missing washing up, not one bit.

Food in bin, plate in dishwasher. turn it on when full, put away, repeat. bliss.

I'll edit to add i'm disabled, so standing at the sink to hand wash hurts. dishwasher is much better.

LubaLuca · 24/11/2023 15:42

Rinsing is a rare thing, I can't remember the last time I did that.

The dishwasher goes on once a day while I'm doing something else. I'd have to wash up at least three times a day if I was going to do it manually.

CrystalSea · 24/11/2023 15:43

You don’t have to scrape or rinse your plates. You just put them in. Mine runs every couple of days so there are no ‘horrible wafts’ and unless you have weird mugs with great divots in the bottom, mine all come out dry.

It sounds like you haven’t had one in a long time. Modern ones are not like you describe and they’re much more energy efficient than washing up by hand. Plus nothing washed by hand is ever properly clean.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 24/11/2023 15:43

I've never owned a dishwasher and still think you are being weird.

Zimunya · 24/11/2023 15:43

Exactly - what's all this scraping and rinsing business? We don't scrape our crockery any more than we would ahead of putting it in a basin of soapy water, and I certainly don't rinse anything before putting it in the dishwasher.

LoobyDop · 24/11/2023 15:44

Scraping and rinsing is a far less unpleasant task than cleaning scraps of food out of the dishwasher filter, so I don’t mind doing it.

myotherkidisacassowary · 24/11/2023 15:44

I’ve never scraped or washed things before putting them in the dishwasher in my life.

Comedycook · 24/11/2023 15:44

I often use my dishwasher 4/5 times a day

littleblackcat27 · 24/11/2023 15:44

I’m with you OP 😅

Never have wanted a dishwasher.

Friends have them and they do seem to breakdown with some regularity- and what’s the point? I can wash up a lot quicker than the dishwasher 😁

YourNameGoesHere · 24/11/2023 15:44

We got one this year and damn right I'm evangelical about it!

You obviously don't have one and it's fine to be jealous but anyone who thinks hand washing dishes is better than a dishwasher is living in the past.

myotherkidisacassowary · 24/11/2023 15:45

myotherkidisacassowary · 24/11/2023 15:44

I’ve never scraped or washed things before putting them in the dishwasher in my life.

Also - they’re more environmentally friendly!

Lunde · 24/11/2023 15:45

I don't think you've had to pre-rinse plates since the very early models in the 1970s

MogTheMoogle · 24/11/2023 15:45

...because I don't have to actually wash and dry up?

I am bad dishwasher owner and don't really rinse. The filter is there for all the errant grains of rice etc., and unless something is particularly stuck on the dishwasher washes it off.

It even has a pre-rinse if I feel inclined.

As my dishwasher seems to be a surragate for the shelves, everything gets stacked on the sink. So its unloaded, and loaded in the same session, maybe 10 mins.

If by chance the dishwasher is empty, it's great cooking, and just scraping out food and plopping it on a rack, ready to be washed with everything else, rather than being another chore after cooking.

I don't get slops of water from cups. Unless I've left a lid or something upside down....

Whilst you could probably wash up quicker than the dishwasher wash cycle...the whole point is while it's on you can be doing something else. So time wise, you're better off with the dishwasher

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/11/2023 15:47

I don’t have a dishwasher in this house so everything gets hand washed.

We are moving next month. To say I am so excited to have a dishwasher again is the understatement of the century. Hand washing is fucking shit and there’s always dishes either dirty or clean on my worktops, it looks messy as hell

Theres a certain type of person who hates it when people (well, women) try to make life easier than themsleves rather than being a colossal martyr

AdoraBell · 24/11/2023 15:47

YABVeryU it’s my favourite storage space in the entire house.

ChainBastard · 24/11/2023 15:47

To be fair OP MY dishwasher requires everything to be scraped and rinsed before putting it in, because it's temperamental and will often leave things dirtier than when they went in.
However, that's because it's a bit shit and I need a new one. (Any recommendations for a built in one, guys?)

I don't get the smell issue unless I put something in there that's already stinky.

In a small kitchen, with three children and one, often two, occasionally three adults, we NEED a dishwasher. I have a few things I hand wash and I absolutely hate it, can't imagine having to do it daily.

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/11/2023 15:47

Also I don’t rinse plates before they do in a dishwasher. The dishwasher does that job for you. Idk scrape food off but that’s just good sense
