To think dishwasher fans are part of a cult

I look at people who like dishwashers the same way as I might someone who lives isolated from society, wearing a tin foil hat, while hanging on the every word of madman - with a mix of confusion and pity. Why do people like them? You still have to scrape the waste food off, rinse the plate, then put it in the rack. With hand washing this is where it ends. With a dishwasher you then have to put up with the horrible wafts of smell that come out every time you add a utensil until you finally have a full load/have run out of everything when you can turn it on. Then you have to unload the bastard. Don't get me started on the slops of cold or hot water you get from upside down mugs. So what is the appeal?!

Yes!!! My experience is that you can smell the musty aroma of a dishwasher washed glass! And it's cloudy! But maybe there is hope yet!

I also didn't mention pans because I didn't think they could be cleaned in a dishwasher - will it deal with casserole pots etc.?!

Welded-on burnt stew won’t fully come off, but the dishwasher will have a good go at it, so there’s far less scrubbing to do, and you can probably just scrape it off once you take it out of the dishwasher.

TootiiFrootii · 24/11/2023 16:08

I'd like a dishwasher but our kitchen is tiny. Tiny. Sadly I need to use any extra space as a pantry. I like the way they take the tea stains off mugs and occasionally take a box of mugs to my Mums to run them through her dishwasher. Maybe that's just me?

Are they really more environmentally friendly than a bowl of hot water and some soap though? When you take the whole life cycle of the unit into consideration and the resources, costs and water involved in its production and end of life. That must stack up?

For me, it's back to staring out the window and daydreaming while washing glasses first, then mugs and so on. Wax on, wax off.

YourNameGoesHere · 24/11/2023 16:08

Depends on what pans and pots you've got but all of ours are dishwasher safe, I wouldn't use them if I had to hand wash the bloody things.

Honestly OP you've been misinformed for so long, do some research and join the 21st century.

Who is scraping and rinsing? I’ve had a dishwasher since I was a small child and couldn’t imagine not having one.

Same. I personally think people who have a full household and still hand wash are just stupid. What a waste of your time if you have the space for it.

Tomatojuiceandvodka · 24/11/2023 16:09

I saw a tiktok recently about a woman who had two dishwashers. She would fill one with dirty, put it on. When it was done she didn’t unload it but rather used it as a “clean things cupboard” and took what she needed as and when. When used they went into the other dishwasher, which in its turn later became the clean things cupboard. I wish my kitchen were big enough for two dishwashers.

WilmaWonka · 24/11/2023 16:09

I have to say with regards to cheaper tablets, having used cheaper ones at various periods over 25 years of dishwasher use, Finish and Fairy are the only ones that get stuff consistently clean, shiny and no smell. They are often on offer though. I think last shop I got 84 Finish ones for £8 which was reasonable.

Cnidarian · 24/11/2023 16:09

EVERYTHING goes in the dishwasher, everything

BarbaraofSeville · 24/11/2023 16:09

We're on our third dishwasher. The first one lasted 13 years, the second 8, which was disappointing because we rarely get less than a decade out of an appliance.

Both times we needed a new one, part of the deciding process was which could be delivered quickest from where.

So John Lewis who couldn't bring anything we wanted within less than a week while our washing up was piling up didn't get a look in vs Currys who could bring us a suitable one the very next day, for £50 less than JL wanted for it.

Applesaarenttheonlyfruit · 24/11/2023 16:10

I have 2

BeansOnToast32 · 24/11/2023 16:10

I don't have one but I don't do the washing up either. I cook 99% of the time and OH washes all of the pots. I only wash the pots if I'm home alone and make something to eat, then I'll wash after.

To be honest though I've never wanted one because all the ones I've been in/near in other peoples houses smell when they are opened and it puts me right off.

I'm a bit funny with stuff like that though, I hate washing up bowls 🤢 or when people have bowls/sinks full of water filled with dirty pots and have them just sit there in stagnant filthy water with floaters. I wouldn't even be able to put my hand in.

Cornettoninja · 24/11/2023 16:11

cloudy glasses = not enough salt. I think some people think the (expensive) tablets proclaiming they’re three in one (detergent, salt and rinse aid) are enough. In my experience they’re a bit crap. Rinse aid and salt can be bought for less than a couple of quid and need topping up infrequently - then it doesn’t really matter if you use a cheap dishwasher tablet. probably top mine up monthlyish using it daily.

winniethedoo · 24/11/2023 16:11

I got my first dishwasher at 37 😀 I get your point, but for me it's not having to have a load of dishes stacked on the draining board. They are contained in either dishwasher or drawer.

Nanny0gg · 24/11/2023 16:12

ChainBastard · 24/11/2023 15:47

To be fair OP MY dishwasher requires everything to be scraped and rinsed before putting it in, because it's temperamental and will often leave things dirtier than when they went in.
However, that's because it's a bit shit and I need a new one. (Any recommendations for a built in one, guys?)

I don't get the smell issue unless I put something in there that's already stinky.

In a small kitchen, with three children and one, often two, occasionally three adults, we NEED a dishwasher. I have a few things I hand wash and I absolutely hate it, can't imagine having to do it daily.

Siemens.

Quiet, efficient. Excellent. You don't need the fancy ones that have an internal light but the top rack for cutlery and the blue floor light that tells you it's on are brilliant.

Floralnomad · 24/11/2023 16:12

My dishwasher rarely smells ,I scrape off food waste , everything goes in and comes out smelling lovely and all clean . If your glasses are coming out cloudy then there is something wrong with your dishwasher .

They will wash anything, especially if you run it twice!

Omg! Do you alternate their use and never have to unload them?! I’m so jel

gingercat02 · 24/11/2023 16:12

I love mine.
We've been together 25 years and only on our second one.
If there is actually food on the plates, yes, scrape it off, but you do that before handwashing?
Almost never rinse and putting away takes about 3 mins. I do it when my toast is on in the mornings.
Mine doesn't smell except occasionally in the height of summer and I would put it on part full if it did.

Lulaloo · 24/11/2023 16:12

Wouldn’t be without one. When the kids were toddlers it meant that their little plates, cups etc were sterile and the kitchen is always tidy! I can never get saucepans as cleans as the dishwasher. Win win. If you put
it on overnight it’s much cheaper to run also.

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 24/11/2023 16:13

It's just personal choice isn't it. I don't have one now. Barely used it when I did have one because I like to just get all the chores done and be able to relax. I wash things whilst cooking so there's generally just a pan and whatever we've used to eat off/with to wash.

I also get put off by the weird smell glasses often have from a dishwasher.

Veryangryboy · 24/11/2023 16:13

I'm well and truly in the cult...I have 2 dishwashers. OP, you are doing it wrong. No need to rinse, and it shouldn't smell either.

AlltheFs · 24/11/2023 16:14

We put everything that fits in the dishwasher, pots, pans, trays. Don’t rinse anything.
It goes on every day (twice at weekends) so no smell.

Never had a breakdown either.

Absolutely couldn’t be without it.

StardustGiraffe · 24/11/2023 16:14

Oh but it just saves all the clutter in and around the sink?! It used to do my head in, the constant, constant washing up. And if it was less constant, then the sink was full of plates, cups, cutlery....it was never ending.

Now we just stick the dishwasher on every other day or so and it makes such a difference. Though I do agree I hate unloading it, even though it takes mere minutes.

PickAChew · 24/11/2023 16:14

It does a far better job of washing up than my husband. He is happy to use and empty it. Job done.
