Is it just becoming the norm? How is everyone affording it in a cost of living crisis?

I had necessary facial surgery (corrective, after an accident) and got a small amount to re-balance my lips/return them to the way they were beforehand

You can't tell I've had them done - DH knows, but my own mother still threatens to kill me if I "fuck with my face" Grin and she will never be told the truth

However, I paid an absolute fortune to a plastic surgeon to have them done.. and he was under strict instructions to make it look like I didn't have any. I think the going rate around here for lips is £150 - £200 for 1ml

I had 0.5ml and it cost me £375

I will probably have to keep it up annually but honestly, you can't tell

I could maybe find a photo

I think girls WANT you to notice, like I'm paying for it so I want you to know I can afford it

AhBiscuits · 23/11/2023 06:35

A good friend of mine has gone way over the top with it, they look awful. We went for a drink the other week and she had to get a straw for her wine because she kept dribbling it. She's a highly intelligent woman with a high flying career. I will never understand her choosing to do that to herself.

LickleLamb · 23/11/2023 06:41

Don't worry - once everyone has it it will start to go out of fashion just like black slug eyebrows.

RampantIvy · 23/11/2023 06:51

I don't think most of the posters have been bitchy about the fake lips look. I have said I dislike the look and so have most posters. It's no different to disliking other fashion looks, whether it is about clothes, make up, piercings or hair colour.

Poudretteite · 23/11/2023 06:55

It's very common. It's one of those things like Botox - you only notice when it's obvious ie excessive or badly done. Friends have had it and I never knew, but I have others - one particular friend who was always really beautiful but now looks overly worked on and it has really aged her and made her look plastic.

Lemmoella · 23/11/2023 06:58

I keep seeing people in shops and the street and being really taken aback by how stretched their faces are. I do think there is a place for a little filler, 0.5ml perhaps, natural, subtle I get it - but I am seeing women with very clear 5ml in lips and dozens of other ml in their faces and it is upsetting to see how distorted they look and can’t believe practitioners carry on filling when they are clearly full enough!

babbygabby · 23/11/2023 07:13

tbf you can notice botox when someone is of a certain age but have little movement/few wrinkles as it’s not natural for most to not have any signs of ageing.

My lips look very normal

Lip fillers don't automatically mean duck lips

Nice lips and nice teeth! I would not think you had had filler.

GeneCity · 23/11/2023 07:32

Missingmyusername · 22/11/2023 22:29

Lip filler will pass, it’ll be replaced with something else.

Yes, but what with - something else that's even more invasive and un-regulated?

filthypride · 23/11/2023 07:39

It looks awful if people overfill. I had 0.5 (normal for subtle results is 1 ml) put into mine to even them up, aging has caused volume loss on one side, and no one would who didn't know me would guess that I had it done.

I think it looks lovely if done correctly and not for the main reason of being dramatically over plumped.

CuboidsAndSpheres · 23/11/2023 07:51

Exactly this ...Makes me think of engorged labial lips every time I see an overdone pouty pair!

You must feel the same about naturally full lips, women non-white by origin. Fine by me, Quite happy to be sexually appealing and put out subliminal messages of my attractiveness.

Saggypants · 23/11/2023 00:25

It's fashion, it'll pass like everything else does.

It might be cheap but add in brows, nails, tan, hair etc and it's a small fortune every month to get that 'look' which is on trend. I worry how many young women are missing out on the opportunity to build wealth while they're still at home with no dependents, because of all the money being frittered away on this stuff.

My dd has just turned 18. She doesn't go in for the lips/extensions/thick make up look but looks lovely, fresh and modern. She has nearly 10k saved up from her part-time job that she does whilst at college. I guarantee she wouldn't have anywhere near this if she'd wanted the fake look. I am a bit relieved!

IHeartGeneHunt · 23/11/2023 08:04

It costs about £10 a time in a little salon where I live, lots of people have it. I don't, I think it looks awful.

Jellycats4life · 23/11/2023 08:05

The problem is an abundance of cheap, poorly trained people willing to supply it.

I was watching a mum on social media yesterday and was mesmerised by her overfilled lips. It had migrated all over the place: her top lip was completely distorted and her bottom lip was almost hanging down with the weight. It looked horrendous.

Seaglass7 · 23/11/2023 08:08

I follow a couple of influencers on Instagram who are in the 50+ age range and they’re both very open about the fillers/botox they’ve had done. It’s EXTREMELY subtle and I’m very impressed with the results, very natural and just makes them look well rested. I’ve been half tempted tbh, based on their results. Their faces still move, their lips are still natural looking, they look great imo.

The other extreme of those who seem to strive for the obvious fake look, especially in those so young is a really worrying trend.

Posters have mentioned hair/eyebrows/fake lashes etc, these can mostly be corrected if things go wrong, they usually don’t have long term effects, trends come and go etc. BUT in 20 years time what are those huge fake lips going to look like? Stretched skin might be permanent, lumps in the lips too. Teamed with the fact that imo the face starts or does look like a caricature of the original person.

Being honest, I feel extremely sad when I see famous people who were once naturally beautiful, distort their features in such a way that they no longer resemble the person they once were, same goes for the younger generation who want the fake look.

Yeah I think the thing that surprises me about this one is it involves something being injected into your face! But maybe that's just me being squeamish.

I'd be very suspicious of anyone doing that for a tenner.

It's just the latest fad. It will pass. But I don't understand how people afford all the maintenance! Is it called the beauty tax?

MumblesParty · 23/11/2023 08:21

I do sometimes wonder at what point people will decide to stop. It’s all very well having fillers and Botox and so on, to try and reduce the signs of ageing - but do people plan to do it for ever? Will they be having Botox into their 80s? If not, then at what age do you decide it’s OK to look your age? 50s? 60s? Whenever it happens, it’ll be a hell of a shock, to suddenly age 20+ years in a few days without fillers/Botox!!

Alondra · 23/11/2023 08:22

IMO, the problem is not the lip fillers. The cosmetic industry is evolving and has changed a lot in the last 20 years. Until not that long ago if you wanted to get rid of wrinkles after 50, surgery was the only option with the problems' surgery may cause. These days botox does the same except it's not intrusive or permanent.

Same with lip fillers. If you use a lot or use it when you are very young and the lips are full of collagen, you can end up with the duck mouth. But if you use very little when your lips are thinning out because of age, it can look lovely and make you look younger.

When I was in my 20s (almost 40 years ago) we used to put toothpaste on the lips to make them look fuller. A few things have changed since then 😁

IClaudine · 23/11/2023 08:26

How did the toothpaste thing work @Alondra ? Asking for a friend🤣

You'd put the toothpaste for about 15 mins, washed it away and begun your make up routine. The menthol makes the lips look fuller.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 23/11/2023 08:37

I have a family member who is a dentist and she’s doing Botox and lip fillers on the side. I found it surprising but I guess people trust health trained professionals more than some random person.

I was getting my nails done and all but one of the women doing nails had their lips done. Some were so pumped it looked like air was in them. I think it looks worse on younger women as you have a nice fresh face and you just distort it. I can sympathise with someone who sees their lips minimising with age and wants to return to how they looked - although I don’t think it’s the healthiest approach.

Barnowlsandbluebells · 23/11/2023 08:41

Gobleki · 22/11/2023 22:56

It’s on its way out. The trendiest of young teens do not do filler or enhancements, very 2010,s!! . 90’s look of hardly any make up is in now. Always takes the other generations ages to catch up. It’s pretty unfashionable to have fake lashes and filler / heavy make up / contouring and tight gym clothes now.

Teens are not the leaders of fashion - thank goodness.

Seriously?

You're very pretty but no, they don't look normal.

CremeEggSupremacy · 23/11/2023 08:58

MarmaladeMaggie · 23/11/2023 05:22

It is always, always, always noticeable.

No it isn’t. Only badly done filler is always noticeable.
