Is it just becoming the norm? How is everyone affording it in a cost of living crisis?

People can’t always tell.

I’ve never had lip fillers and have been asked several times if I have because I have quite pouty lips and my top lip is naturally fuller and slightly shelf like. It’s bloody annoying being asked and I’m sure some people think I’m a liar when I say I haven’t had anything done.

monsteramunch · 25/11/2023 12:41

@Bahhambug

someone with naturally full lips have the same fullness top and bottom.

What a bizarre thing to state as fact when it is so obviously incorrect.

Ironically lots of people who get filler do so to even up the volume of their top and bottom lips!

faffadoodledo · 25/11/2023 13:45

Been following this thread, and it's such a shame it's disintegrated. I was really interested in what was being said about the cultural levers which are driving the trend. It's not for me or my cash savvy feminist (and might I say extremely beautiful) 25 year old daughter. But we may well be out of step!

My view is that it is the Kardashianisation of beauty that has fuelled the fashion. If I am right then their direct and indirect powers of persuasion are powerful indeed. And the question (I'm sure academics are already asking) is what prompts this ideal of beauty? It is very interesting indeed from a cultural perspective

I LOVE lip fillers on other ladies (I would never get them). When I was OLD, many men told me I stood out with my natural beauty. I'm in my 40s, never had anything done but I use tretinoin and minoxidil for hair so I have nice natural skin and hair

I'm not even a beauty and I get similar comments. I focus on really good skincare so I look natural and healthy.

WWYDlookingafterdad · 25/11/2023 14:03

@faffadoodledo I think someone upthread mentioned the links to sexual desire puffing up the lips - the same reason we wear lipstick due to the increased blood flow making "aroused" lips darker.

I have naturally thicker lips, cupids bow and have never felt anyone paid them much attention. Conversely I remember my mum (long dead) once saying something hugely judgemental about someone looking evil with their mean thin mouth. I think I assumed somewhere in the back of my head when this started that maybe this was an ageist opinion that had been passed on - it's the kind of thing you might read in Dickens and possibly take literally rather than see it as an expression being pulled.

Having said all of that, now I'm knocking on a bit, my lips have become less full, although still shapely. I wouldn't rule out getting them slightly filled to take them back to where they were 10 years ago. Anyone can judge away and be mean, it would be my choice and nothing to do with porn or what men would think ideal.

What is grim is a bunch of bitter women slut shaming other women’s looks and how they choose to spend their money.

Agreed, especially on a forum where so many posters claim to be feminists . . Most of the comments on this thread come across as rather jealous and bitter to be honest.

faffadoodledo · 25/11/2023 14:19

@WWYDlookingafterdad this is true.. lips thin with age and unfortunately attract sexist and ageist epithets. I do wish society would accept us for the way we are at any age. Men's lips thin too!

What is even grimmer is the lengths some women go to disfigure their bodies to attract the opposite sex. I don’t see men injecting their bodies with all manner of potentially toxic chemicals. Granted they often take supplements and live in the gym but in a natural world with a less sedentary lifestyle they would probably have the lean muscular body nature intended.
We scoff at historical fashions, and cultural traditions. But how is filling your lips any different from the corseting of waistlines in the Victorian age or the foot binding in Chinese culture in the pre communist age.
FGM is still carried out, again done to conform with the desires of men. How is filling your face with crap any different? I understand those who want to carefully restore their lips but these would be post menopausal women. But to blow up your lips to the point where they interfere with speech and normal function, why?
So in reply to your comment, how does supporting body disfigurement fit the feminist narrative?

Angrymum22 · 25/11/2023 14:41

Actually, there are men who fill their faces with filler but the majority are from the gay community. Again probably for the same reason. Have a look at The Facelift on bbci player, about a Scottish aesthetics clinic. The main character is so overdone that he is seriously frightening to look at. I’m afraid if I was greeted by him pretreatment I would walk right back out.
Knock yourself out with fillers if you want but if people can’t take their eyes off you don’t assume it’s because it has enhanced your features.

@Itsmehi222 Bit rich you telling me to get mental health support. Clearly I’ve touched a nerve, you should reflect on that.
They didn't suggest you go for support. Try reading again. You seem so angry that you aren't reading properly.

Did I seem angry? My mistake, I wasn’t intending that at all. It can be a little hard to understand the inflictions when reading text.

@drowningfrowning wasn't suggesting you go for mental health support. Reading comprehension.

ambley · 25/11/2023 15:30

I don't think you meant infliction 😀

VanityDiesHard · 25/11/2023 15:31

As for the COL, it has been somewhat overblown by the media. Shops are heaving where I am, and people are still buying things. Also filler isn't super expensive. It looks like utter crap, though. I honestly hope we can move past the whole TOWIE/Kardashians look, it is so fake and naff.

I haven’t told you to get mental health support at all.

I am saying if you want to make a difference to society and women’s unique beauty then go to some mental health support groups to speak to the women there who are suffering with body dysmorphia and mental health issues. You know, because they have and like lip fillers?

You haven’t touched a nerve but can you seriously not read the room? Plenty of posters have posted their own lip filler photos on this thread and you’re making patronising accusations that they have body dysmorphia.

Jellycats4life · 23/11/2023 13:22

Chrissy Tiegan has always been very beautiful but from a side profile she looks very strange now, she has had so much work done.

You mean this photo.

OMG she looks utterly horrendous. I don't actually think she was ever really all that attractive, but she looked a million times better before she messed with her face.

drowningfrowning · 25/11/2023 15:38

@ambley you are also confused. I was pointing out that no one was suggesting anyone went for support. Oh dear it's like people are so enraged that they can't read or comprehend anything. .

Not at all. I was on your side and pointing out that you hadn't meant that.

Enraged?

Are you having a laugh @Angrymum22 ?

filthypride · 25/11/2023 16:30

I've just had another 0.5ml in to correct the royal F up the last person did. I'm so happy. They're not over plumped, they look symmetrical (unlike before) and normal. My lips are generally just lines, I have zero lip, but this looks lovely. So happy, plus I have some left over so I'm going back in 2 weeks for maintenance.

Lip filler everywhere
explainthistomeplease · 25/11/2023 16:41

I'm sure it's obvious that @Angrymum22 is talking in generality. Let's face it the vast majority of filled lips are on women. We all know that.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 25/11/2023 17:03

@explainthistomeplease if your comment is directed at me I am challenging angry mum's assumption that men do not pump chemicals into their body. Look around any gym you will see that is clearly not true. We all know that 🤷‍♀️

explainthistomeplease · 25/11/2023 17:12

@DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy
I haven't set foot in a gym for a few years (these days my fitness revolves around a tennis court). I think gyms are quite interesting places, full of a self selecting set of people who are by and large more interested in their looks than the average Joe or jane. I lived in America in the 90s and there were more breast enhancements in my gym than in my grocery store for instance. That was the 'thing' back then.
I think if you scan the average high street you'll find far more altered women than men.
And note - there's no judgement in my words, only observation.

GoingOffOnATangent · 25/11/2023 17:43

What happens to the layers of lip 'flesh' where the filler is injected in? Does it separate the sub cutaneous layers, does the body then try to heal that 'split' or you do you end with lip skin that is detached from the layers below?
@filthypride your lips look nice. 🙂

Angrymum22 · 25/11/2023 18:03

@DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy I agree re the steroids they are just as bad as lip fillers but often not that noticeable. Also it is possible to build up muscle naturally with a high protein diet and weights. No such thing as a natural lip work out.
I love how women continually claim that their aeasthetic work is not noticeable. Why would you spend all that money if you can’t see it. Smacks of Empora’s new clothes.
I work in dentistry where we are seeing an explosion of major problems following the increasing popularity of Turkey teeth.
I work in a small rural town and have been asked to see two cases in the last couple of months. People who’ve had nothing but problems since returning from Turkey. The same is true for bariatric surgeons having to deal with complications of stomach sleeves. And don’t get me started on Ozempic. We are storing up major problems for an NHS that is currently unable to deal with the genuinely sick never mind the self inflicted problems.

FlissyPaps · 25/11/2023 18:10

Why would you spend all that money if you can’t see it.

Because they want it. That’s it. It’s that simple. It’s nobody else’s business what people choose to spend their money on. It’s nobody else’s business what people do with their own bodies.
