To stop DD15 going to Alton Towers this weekend?

TheSparkling · 22/11/2023 11:01

DD3 is 15 and is currently really unwell with Glandular fever (diagnosed yesterday, after a good week of being unwell).
The doctor said its basically a wait it out type thing, paracetamol regularly and drinks and rest which we are doing. One thing the doctor said was no contact sports for four weeks due to possible issues with the spleen caused by the Glandular Fever. This isn't a problem in itself as DD has been to ill to go to school for the last few days and avoiding PE is fine when she returns.

The problem is DD has tickets for the theme park this weekend and she is determined to go as it is her best friend's birthday. I was updating my partner last night about DD3 and he said she won't be able to go the theme park as the roller coasters will be dangerous due to the spleen issues.

Honestly, this had not crossed my mind when the GP said no contact sports.
Now I am in a panic because DD will be devastated to miss her friend's birthday.

Does anyone thing the no contact sports applies to theme parks and roller coasters?
Should I let her go?

YABU to let her go.
YANBU to stop her going.

(Also just to add, I am trying to get to speak to the GP again to clarify.)

Both voting options mean exactly the same thing.

She really shouldn't go, as she isn't well enough. **

SawX · 22/11/2023 11:10

Most of the safety bars on rides will be over the spleen area and they often exert a lot of pressure. Probably a hell of a lot more dangerous than PE.

Musicaltheatremum · 22/11/2023 11:10

I would say no. The sudden jarring on these rides would be a risk to the spleen which is affected during glandular fever. Could lead to splenic rupture.

BusySittingDown · 22/11/2023 11:12

Unfortunately, no, it's not advised that someone with an active mononucleosis infection go on rides. This is because when someone has mono, their spleen often becomes enlarged. When this occurs, it is much more likely to rupture (or become torn or seriously bruised), which could lead to severe internal bleeding.

Could she go for a couple of hours and have her friends make a fun thing out of going on some of the baby rides in cbeebies land, they will probably enjoy the nostalgia. Then she can leave and get a rest while the others go on and do all the big rides?

They do if you read them but I think OP means to use the buttons to vote as follows:

YABU - let her go
YANBU - don’t let her go.

I was going to suggest that as she can still go and not go on the big rides but that would absolutely suck, if she's a big rides fan. It might even feel worse than actually not going.

fairymary87 · 22/11/2023 11:18

Yeah like someone said, the safety bars hit the spleen area, way worse than PE! Don't let her go

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 22/11/2023 11:20

Presume it's the Christmas thing she's going for? If so I don't think any of the big rides are open anyway. Spinball and the pirate ship. And the spinning barrel things. I'd avoid those three. I think the rest is all kids rides.

What's she planning to go on?

itsallabitofamystery · 22/11/2023 11:20

Due to a completely different medical condition my DD is not allowed to do contact sport. We too had tickets for Alton Towers and their customer service was brilliant. Whilst they wouldn't refund the tickets, they did roll them over for 12 months. I get your daughter would be devastated (mine was too), but her health and safety comes first. Could you not suggest that you roll the tickets over, and will pay for her friend to go with her another time?

Quartz2208 · 22/11/2023 11:22

I remember when I was 21 I got chicken pox 4 days before going on holiday and my parents had to step in and say no (a doctor was prepared weirdly to sign me off as fit to fly). My mum was right though however much I wanted to go I couldn’t.

you need to do the sane she isn’t well enough to good for

Comedycook · 22/11/2023 11:22

No I wouldn't let her go.

Sorry OP! I see now. Thanks Muchof.

OneAndTheSame · 22/11/2023 11:24

I wouldn’t let her. I had glandular fever as a teen and was told to avoid anything that could bump the spleen area. I think the safety bars and being thrown around on rides could possibly do damage.

ilovesooty · 22/11/2023 11:24

No, she shouldn't be going.

Comtesse · 22/11/2023 11:27

The issue with the spleen wouldn’t cross my mind at all but if she’s too ill to go to school then she’s too ill to go trailing round a theme park for hours in the cold. Post viral fatigue is very real after glandular fever and overdoing it would make her feel really rough.

PatriciaHolm · 22/11/2023 11:29

As a PP said, the big rides aren't open (does she realise that?) it's a family Christmas thing so it's CBeebies land, David walliams rides.
Spin ball whizzer is the only bigger ride open so she should avoid that but the other stuff is all children's rides.

Tbh if she's really unwell today though she's unlikely to be well enough at the weekend I wouldn't have though regardless...

Celticliving · 22/11/2023 11:30

I wouldn't be letting her go.

Ring AT and ask them to transfer the ticket to another day.

Floralnomad · 22/11/2023 11:30

Aside from the spleen issues if you are too ill to be at school dragging around Alton Towers isn’t going to make you feel better .

BabyofMine · 22/11/2023 11:43

Is she going with any adults ie friends parents? If you can trust her not to go on any of the harsher rides mentioned I’d let her go, and be explicitly explaining what could happen re her spleen so she is fully aware of it. If they’re going on their own and/or she’s a bit of a rebel then no way would I let her.

Shoxfordian · 22/11/2023 11:45

She's too sick to go regardless of any spleen issues by the sound of it

If she's contagious then the other kids parents won't thank you for sharing the germs around

notfeeblebutPhoebe · 22/11/2023 11:46

You have some detailed comments upthread, let DD read them. Google or NHS website etc. to convince herself.
I remember extreme tiredness and fatigue that went on for ages as well, Teens at a Park they will be worn out even if in best of health.
I suggest.

RiverCartwright · 22/11/2023 11:48

I had glandular fever at a similar age and wouldn’t have got out of bed if Jon Bon Jovi was stood at the end of it so I’m amazed she even feels well enough to do it. It took me months to recover.

As for postponing tickets, they sometimes do that with discretion, but with this being a special event they might not, especially if the ticket price is lower than standard entry to reflect the closures.

BabyofMine · 22/11/2023 11:49

Just found a list of rides, I think I’d let her go if she promises (and you can trust her to keep to it) not to go on the spin ball ride.
