To stop DD15 going to Alton Towers this weekend?

DD3 is 15 and is currently really unwell with Glandular fever (diagnosed yesterday, after a good week of being unwell).
The doctor said its basically a wait it out type thing, paracetamol regularly and drinks and rest which we are doing. One thing the doctor said was no contact sports for four weeks due to possible issues with the spleen caused by the Glandular Fever. This isn't a problem in itself as DD has been to ill to go to school for the last few days and avoiding PE is fine when she returns.

The problem is DD has tickets for the theme park this weekend and she is determined to go as it is her best friend's birthday. I was updating my partner last night about DD3 and he said she won't be able to go the theme park as the roller coasters will be dangerous due to the spleen issues.

Honestly, this had not crossed my mind when the GP said no contact sports.
Now I am in a panic because DD will be devastated to miss her friend's birthday.

Does anyone thing the no contact sports applies to theme parks and roller coasters?
Should I let her go?

YABU to let her go.
YANBU to stop her going.

(Also just to add, I am trying to get to speak to the GP again to clarify.)

Glandular fever is not something to be taken lightly. I had it really badly as a child and then was diagnosed with post viral fatigue and then fibromyalgia and later MS. I didn’t rest as I was in my final year of uni and it’s the biggest regret of my life. Google the links between glandular fever and other long term illnesses like ms. For that reason alone I would not think a day at a theme park is sensible.

This. Glandular fever can take months and months to recover from. She needs to stop and rest and let her body recover.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 23/11/2023 20:15

She sadly needs to stay home and rest but before you break this to her warm her that it's disappointing and she will have a test to look forward to when she's better

Jack80 · 23/11/2023 21:32

Could she go on small rides the children ones or just walk around and enjoy the party I know not that much fun but at least she is there.

timesaretight · 24/11/2023 00:50

You are not being unreasonable. Rollercoasters are not contact sports, but you would be taking a risk by letting her go. With the risk and the fact she is off school, I would say she can't go. See if you can get a refund or sell the ticket and promise she can go, with friends, on another special day.

SurvivorsInc · 24/11/2023 01:06

Once she is recovered she will be able to enjoy things like Alton Towers again. Perhaps that is something to look forward to in a few months time for her?

bluetongue · 24/11/2023 01:52

She’s not well enough to go.

I went on a school adventure / camping trip while I was ill as a teenager and it took months to get over the post viral fatigue.

Bless you TheSparkling, it's so, so tough to make those calls for their own good, holding fast in the face of their disappointment, having to trust your own judgement, especially without their dad. You know you made the right call, she will too eventually!

sashh · 24/11/2023 04:34

Would she be happy to go and not go on any rides?

mylifestory · 24/11/2023 09:59

Let her be there in person if all the others are happy to have her ther bt def no rides for her own safety. I'm sure her friends will understand.
My own dd had a similar problem on her own birthday last year, what was meant to be a climbing party, she cdnt do the actual climbing bt had lunch cake etc and it was all fun. Maybe u can go to physically stop her or the threat of u going. Do explain what ppl have said here about rupturing damage 8nternslly, life threatening etc if u think that'd get it thru to her

HappyMe6 · 24/11/2023 10:50

Glandular fever is not to be taken lightly op, it’s not just a bad throat! I wouldn’t advise you to let her go. She’s not well enough. I had this at 16 years old it took weeks to recover as did my son at 28.

christologymum · 24/11/2023 12:53

None of the big rides are open, just the Xmas market this now. Back open in March.

OP has posted that her DD isn’t going. She’s also posted she was using Alton Towers as an example and that’s not the park they were going.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/11/2023 13:30

Absolutely no, she can't go. She will probably be exhausted by lunch time anyway. She needs to rest up. If she's bit well enough for school. She's not well evnough for AT.

OP. TWO days ago.

thank you to everyone who has responded. It is a resounding no to going.

ellyeth · 04/12/2023 20:02

I had glandular fever when I was in my teens and it was nasty. Even after supposed recovery, I felt exhausted for weeks. With warmth, rest and good food in most cases it sorts itself out, but I would think it most unwise to go on this sort of trip, even without the spleen issue. She may well start to feel exhausted as the day goes on.

My grandson had glandular fever in his late teens and was so poorly he was admitted to hospital for a couple of days.
