to think boss is taking the P?

Boss is very senior in organisation and in early 50s. Sadly diagnosed with cervical cancer in the summer - early stages but took 2 weeks off at end of July to get her head around it. Op was brought forward to mid Aug but she went off a week before to prepare for it. Had hysterectomy and didn’t need any other treatment. Expected to be off for 6 weeks recovery which then got extended. Fair enough.

Then decided there was no point coming back before she had been on a 2 week holiday over Oct half term. Again, fair enough, her kids deserved a treat. She then took another week after coming back before starting her phased return - 3 half days a week. We are up to our necks and working 14 hour days partly to cover for her.

Was talking to another senior manager who said they had spoken to her earlier - she was out Xmas shopping with her sister.

Feels like a piss take to be honest. The only other person I know who had a hysterectomy was back half hours 4 weeks later and full time 2 weeks later. Can it really take 12 weeks to recover?

I appreciate this will sound really mean but we are a small team and have been flat out since July without stopping and will probably have to work over Xmas as well to keep up with everything. And likely to be made redundant next year down to business changes that see her role safe but not ours. :-(

Wow! And yes it can take longer than 12 weeks. What a nasty post.

Having cancer is never a piss take.

rubyslippers · 21/11/2023 18:14

Jesus
your poor boss
what a dreadful time she’s had
upur senior management are at fault for not covering her post or making adequate arrangements for that
I would imagine massive surgery such as a hysterectomy plus cancer would take a while to mentally and physically recover from

FiveWordsWillDoNotEightyFive · 21/11/2023 18:14

Fucking hell. This post cannot be real.

When you’ve had a serious cancer diagnosis I think it’s fair enough to take some time to come to terms with everything. Healing physically is one thing, mentally is another thing altogether.

BerriesNutsConkers · 21/11/2023 18:14

She is entitled to take the time she needs. If management are not providing cover then that is not her fault!!!!

Squiggles23 · 21/11/2023 18:15

I don’t think your post is nasty.

Are you being paid to cover her work? I think my goodwill would run out if she’s well enough to Christmas shop but not work.

Tbh if it’s been since July and you might be made redundant anyway I would try and speak to management and say you can’t cover that volume of work anymore as it’s relentless and affecting your health. However, if she is about to start her phased return it might not be worth it.

coconutpie · 21/11/2023 18:16

Fucking hell. Your poor boss. I suggest you take a long hard look at your attitude because it's awful.

Sirzy · 21/11/2023 18:16

What a nasty post.

My mum had a full hysterectomy last year and even as someone fit and healthy before the recovery knocked her both physically and mentally.

good on her for listening to her body and taking time to recover rather than being rushed back.

Sirzy · 21/11/2023 18:17

And a couple of hours out shopping is very different to being in work!

NewJobNewMeNewLife · 21/11/2023 18:20

Maybe she’s struggling to come to terms with everything? Maybe she’s got issues with her bladder or bowel? It’s none of your business if she’s off and the details of it. If you have an issue with your workload, that’s separate and you need to go through the proper channels.

Mamato29192 · 21/11/2023 18:28

Yabu

Xmaspenguin · 21/11/2023 18:31

Have you had cancer yourself OP?!

I'm presuming not.

FirstTime8717 · 21/11/2023 18:31

YABU but maybe you're stressed which is making you very unkind. A cancer diagnosis is so hard, you can't imagine it until it happens to you. And some women don't just bounce back after a full hysterectomy.

The fact that your work is not providing proper cover and the threat of redundancy are not her fault. Why are you working so hard if you might get redundant anyway?

Slobberchops1 · 21/11/2023 18:32

It’s up to the company to support your work . Cancer is not her fault you are blaming the wrong person

you don’t like the company or your boss , probably going to lose your job anyway so start looking for something else

SawX · 21/11/2023 18:33

Sometimes I wish karma were real.

SauvignonBlanche · 21/11/2023 18:34

Lazy bitch -recovering from cancer 🙄

What a horrible post.

tiredmama23 · 21/11/2023 18:35

Speechless at the sheer lack of empathy for another human. Genuinely no words.

CrimsonPig · 21/11/2023 18:35

YABU.

justalittlesnoel · 21/11/2023 18:35

YABU.

Your boss needs to take all the time they need - comparing to a hysterectomy (which might have been pre planned) vs one which came about quickly from a cancer diagnosis is not the same. Just the hormones after a hysterectomy can be horrendous to cope with!

Her going out for a Christmas shopping day is good, it's good she's able to get out and do some normal things, especially with family. That's the sort of thing that'll aid recovery.

It's the issue for your company to sort if you're all pulling 14 hour days five days a week to cover the workload. Weirdly I can't understand how multiple people need to work 14 hour days to cover for one person, the math doesn't add up there.

CaramacFiend · 21/11/2023 18:36

She probably realised that her job is just a job.

mrsbyers · 21/11/2023 18:37

Shame on you , your anger should be directed at your managers who are not dealing with the situation

Tinkerbyebye · 21/11/2023 18:38

I don’t think your post is nasty, it’s how you feel after having to work 14 hours days to cover her

time to speak to your bosses boss and say that you and the team can’t continue and as your boss is unwell they need to either bring in support or advise you what takes priority. I would stress that you and the others are nearly at burn out and may well have to take time off sick if it continues

its ok to support the boss with her issues but the employer owes a duty of care to all staff not just her

39and · 21/11/2023 18:38

You should be ashamed of yourself for writing this post. Let's hope you never get cancer.

Fourlegsandatail · 21/11/2023 18:39

You sound deeply unpleasant OP.

fishfingersandchipsagain · 21/11/2023 18:39

Horrible post. YABVVU.

I totally understand that you are fed up working long hours, but that’s the company’s fault for not getting someone in to cover the role. Take that up with your boss’s boss. NONE of that is the fault of the poor woman who is off sick.

Give your head a wobble.

Fucking hell. Your poor boss. I suggest you take a long hard look at your attitude because it's awful.

This. She must work like a trojan normally if a whole team of you are having to work 14 hours days to cover just her!
