Any chance there could be issues with cabin luggage on EasyJet?

We're gearing up for our EasyJet flight and decided to add an extra 23 kg luggage to our ticket. Our ticket already includes an under-seat bag, meant to be around 45 x 36 x 20 cm, as EasyJet specifies. I've recently picked up two suitcases from Amazon, but they're actually 33 x 20 x 55 cm. Do you think they'll be fine for our flight, or is there a chance we might have issues with the size?

I would say it won't fit.

Caroparo52 · 20/11/2023 09:17

If they are squishy then fine. If its a hard outer case then I've known people been asked to put luggage into the case size checker and if it doesn't fit then been refused... asked to pay extra. Depends who you get...

wokbun · 20/11/2023 09:19

If you can squish the 55 into a 45cm gap then you might be ok

Yes, they have a size checker when you board and you get charged there and then

Blink1880 · 20/11/2023 09:19

The fact that you say suitcase makes me think hard outer shell.
If it is - not a chance it will fit.

Dogsitterwoes · 20/11/2023 09:22

They are too long and there is a frame the right size they can check in. Mine has been checked as it just squeaks in. If it will squish down to fully fit in a space of those dimensions when packed, okay, otherwise you risk a charge for hold luggage.

keye · 20/11/2023 09:22

I don't quite follow here

If you have added a hold bag it doesn't matter that's it's bigger than the cabin bag size?

If are you asking about the other bags for in the cabin, in which case what is the relevance of the 23kg?

ReviewingTheSituation · 20/11/2023 09:24

It's possible you might be OK, if the flight isn't busy, the bags aren't packed to capacity and they look small... but if they do check you'll be charged at the gate. And they may well check.
I wouldn't risk it.

If you've got a 23kg suitcase, then just take small backpacks on as hand luggage.

Chersfrozenface · 20/11/2023 09:33

Also, don't forget that one underseat bag means just one.

You can't take an underseat bag and a handbag or shoulder bag or backpack as well.

toastofthetown · 20/11/2023 09:42

They aren’t the right size. You might get away with it, or you might be forced to pay extra or put the outsized cases in the hold. EasyJet have a frame which measures both large and small cabin baggage, and as yours is quite a bit longer it might flag. And as a PP says, EasyJet is usually very strict with only one carry on item. I’ve seen many people trying to squeeze their handbag into a case at the gate, and if it won’t fit, their case is put in the hold.

PangramAddict · 20/11/2023 09:46

I've done a couple of hand luggage o my easyJet flights and no one gave a shit about the luggage. I guess if something looks wildly too large they may check but some people had pretty big bags and staff didn't do anything.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 20/11/2023 09:46

23kg is not a cabin bag with EasyJet, that’s a checked bag weight.

Echobelly · 20/11/2023 09:48

If it can't be squashed to size you will probably be charged - seen it happen to people on Easyjet, they do check.

KaiserChefs · 20/11/2023 09:48

The problem is OP, if it won't fit under the seat in front of you then you won't be able to put it under the seat in front of you, will you? The dimensions are there so you can get the right size luggage. I'd look at getting a different carry-on and remember you need to stow your handbag in it as well.

Here's what Easyjet say:

Cabin bags

Hold luggage >Everyone can bring one small under seat cabin bag per person on board for free.It can be a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including any handles and wheels) and must be kept under the seat in front of you. That should be enough to bring all the essentials for your journey or for a short trip. Your bag can weigh up to 15kg, but we do ask that you’re able to lift and carry it yourself. If you’d also like to bring a large cabin bag on board (max. 56 x 45 x 25 cm, including any handles and wheels), you have the option to book a large cabin bag for your flight. Every customer who books a large cabin bag can also enjoy the benefit of Speedy Boarding.

So using the suitcase as the bag you've paid extra for should be fine if you've booked a large cabin bag or checked bag, but the second suitcase will be a problem as it will be too long to fit under the seat.

evilharpy · 20/11/2023 09:58

I'm confused - do you mean you want to use the suitcases you've bought as your carry on baggage to try and fit it under the seat, or are you using it as your 23kg checked baggage allowance? If the former, there's no chance you'll fit that under the seat, and they do check - if you've paid to bring a wheely suitcase on board you'd be in the speedy boarding queue.

Everanewbie · 20/11/2023 09:58

The cabin bag doesn't meet their requirements. In my experience the extent to which they enforce it varies. Some flights they seem to check everyone's and others they don't seem to even give a second glance to blatantly oversized bags.

What I would say though is if you decide not to pay and take this bag, accept that you're taking a chance in full knowledge of their T&Cs, and please don't act all indignant if you're accosted at the gate and told to pony up.

YouveGotAFastCar · 20/11/2023 10:00

They’re too big, and easyJet are using this as a money spinner. Expect to be charged for them and have them put in the hold, and if you don’t, it’s a bonus.

Also be mindful that they may well end up the hold anyway, easyJet likes to oversell cabin space.

Mumbunz · 20/11/2023 10:00

Thankfully, the two luggate I just bought aren't hard-shelled; they're actually squishy. So, I'm hoping if they ask us to fit them into a case size checker, I might be able to squish them in. What I'm really worried about is whether they're too fussy with their luggage rules or if they can be flexible. The more I go over their luggage policy, the more it freaks me out. It's almost like they wrote it to scare people off.

I used to get on Easyjet twice a week.

I have seen many many incidents of people crying/ shouting/ threatening staff and being removed by security ( Ok the last one just once) because they had the wrong size bag.. Occasionally they don't check size, but mostly they do. Your bag is the wrong size.

The worst for me was once after I had had my bag checked I took my cost off and shoved it in my bag because I was hot. They then re checked everything at the entrance to the plane. They forced me to take my coat out of the bag, holding up the queue behind me. It was very embarrassing and ( I though) rather pointless. They can be very strict!

Yeah this confused me. If you've paid for larger cabin baggage you'd also have speedy boarding (same as Ryanair's priority boarding), so if you're in the non-speedy queue you should only have a small bag you can shove under the seat and they will pull you up on it - the segregated queues make it obvious what you should have. If you've paid for larger cabin baggage but yours is 58cm rather than 55cm you're probably ok.

Notwhatyouwanttohear · 20/11/2023 10:04

Why would you not just buy a bag that stuck to the rules.

I'd understand if you already had them.

But you've gone and bought two brand new bags that you don't know if they will fit and now are having to waste time posting on here and having anxiety when you turn up at the gate.

We flew on EasyJet in September and had the same experience.

We had the small and larger hand baggage, all in regulation size, but there were some massive bags that had been allowed in the cabin, someone had one of those giant rucksacks that was well over the 55 cm limit. Because we got on towards the end of the queue, our cases had to go near the back of the plane even though our seats were near the front, so we had to wait until everyone had got off to retrieve our luggage.

We've also flown Jet2 this year and the experience is much better. They allow two pieces of hand luggage in the cabin as standard but if you have hold luggage too so use baggage drop off (DP took a bike) they nearly always offer to take any hand luggage you don't need on the flight into the hold for free, so good for wheelie suitcases that only contain clothes etc.

I think they wrote it to stop people trying to bring in bigger bags than allowed. There has to be some limits otherwise everyone would just bring whatever on.

Desolatewardrobe · 20/11/2023 10:11

Their rules are to make them money. Enforcement varies but I have frequently seen it strictly applied and people being charged at the gate. I don’t risk it.
