Any chance there could be issues with cabin luggage on EasyJet?

We're gearing up for our EasyJet flight and decided to add an extra 23 kg luggage to our ticket. Our ticket already includes an under-seat bag, meant to be around 45 x 36 x 20 cm, as EasyJet specifies. I've recently picked up two suitcases from Amazon, but they're actually 33 x 20 x 55 cm. Do you think they'll be fine for our flight, or is there a chance we might have issues with the size?

Chances are it won’t be accepted OP

Because easyjet charges for hold luggage they get lots of people trying to max out the free hand luggage. So they don’t have space for any oversized hand luggage and they are strict.

I have seen people who have correctly sized hand luggage being told that it has to go in the hold because they are out of space for hand luggage on board .. they don’t charge for that but obviously it’s a PITA if they were hoping to avoid waiting for bags the other end. They will look down the line for people with the largest hand luggage.

You’ll most likely be told you have to check in your oversized “hand luggage” and you’ll have to pay airport prices too which is more £ than if you pay for hold luggage online.

If you have a 23kg hold bag that should be plenty surely - just take a soft holdall type bag for carry on.

Roussette · 20/11/2023 11:14

I travel on Easyjet a lot. You never know when it will be checked or not... it does hack me off when people take far too big cases on the plane, if we all did it and they checked the size, the plane would be delayed and there would be a big impact for everyone.

I've seen people taking the most ridiculous sized cases on EJ, way bigger than what they paid for, and I am glad when they have to try and force their suitcase/bag into the frame and when it doesn't fit, a charge is made and is put in the hold.

I do think the rules are ridiculous and frustrating but OP your case is far too big to fit under the seat... surely if you have hold luggage you can take something smaller?

Djimm · 20/11/2023 11:18

They are both strict and laissez-faire. Most of the time they don't care, but occasionally they clamp down and sting people for a load of money. It depends how lucky you are feeling, and how you weigh the upfront cost of a new bag vs the (arguably small, but hard to quantify) risk of getting ridiculously overcharged for an oversized bag.

Buying the right size bag is like paying upfront for insurance - works out more expensive on average than risking it (probably), but removing worry, not just for this flight but for future ones, is worth it for me.

Apologies for any confusion earlier. I just wanted to clarify that I didn't pay extra for cabin luggage. I only paid for the 23 kg check in luggage, and I'm not concerned about its dimensions. However, my main worry is about the standard luggage allowance, specifically the one that fits under the seat. I'm a bit anxious about whether my luggage will be accepted since it's 10 cm larger than the allowed size. The luggage I bought is this one:

I would say that's a no. The dimension where you are most out is the height/length and I really doubt that will squash down because it's the length that includes the handle and the top.

You will need to pay for large per hand baggage or take different hand baggage.

dementedpixie · 20/11/2023 11:28

I'd say no to that fitting under the seat in front. We tend to take a backpack/rucksack type thing

RaraRachael · 20/11/2023 11:28

I recently bought a smaller cabin bag as OH was fined £39 for our previous one being too big. So the new one is the exact measurements that Easyjet claim can travel for free. When I got to Inverness airport (the only airport) this happens at, the girl asked me to put it in the thing and it wouldn't fit - by a long way. I asked her how that was possible as it was the exact dimensions and she didn't answer - just kept saying if I'd bought a speedy boarder ticket it would have been included. So I had to cough up £48.
I am about to write and complain about it as it just didn't make sense.

Needless to say on the return flight from Gatwick, nobody gave my case a second glance and I was able to take it on board without paying anything.

StoneColdAlibi · 20/11/2023 11:30

100% that won't be allowed - sorry

botheredand · 20/11/2023 11:30

That's obviously not going to fit, it's 10cm too tall and isn't a bag so it won't squish. They won't allow it, could either turn it away or charge you extra.

What size is the bag?
I flew from few airports and so far the cage was correct sizes. Hope you get the money back if they had wrong sized cage!

That’s definitely not acceptable. It’s not squashy as it won’t squash lengthways, which is the dimension you’re oversized in. My experience is that you are far more likely to get away with oversized bags if it’s a soft sided rucksack. If you are in the standard queue with case you are asking to be checked. Why not just return the cases and buy something compliant? Or pay the extra for the large cabin luggage?

eurochick · 20/11/2023 11:45

I can't see how that is going to fit under the seat in front even if you don't get penalised by the boarding staff. That is just not going to work. Get something that is the correct size then you don't have to worry about it.

I take it you had a basic ticket, which includes a free under seat bag, what Easyjet calls a "small cabin bag", 45 x 36 x 20cm.

That would be the dimensions of the frame you had to try to put your bag into

Did you have what Easyjet call a "large cabin bag", 56 x 45 x 25cm? That would not fit into the small cabin bag frame It would also explain why the staff member mentioned Speedy Boarding - that's the ticket that includes a free large cabin bag, the one that goes in the overhead bin.

Pipistrellus · 20/11/2023 11:48

If you already have a big suitcase in the hold then why the need to max out the cabin luggage? I'd just take a small rucksack each instead, or are you using the 55cm long bags as daypacks and they need to be that big?

Based on our experience Op... it definitely won't be OK. We turned up with 2 cabin bags that were 52cm (4cm over the 48cm limit). All fine with the other dimensions. We had to pay an extra £40 on the spot per bag to take them. Coming back, we were able to prebook the bags at a mere £22 each. We were supposed to be on a TUI flight but became EasyJet and the allowances are different.

Caspianberg · 20/11/2023 11:57

No
The free hand luggage now is only for small bags
that fit under seat by your feet. A) that bag won’t fit, b) where do you plan to squeeze your feet?
You can’t use overhead lockers for the free small bags. They are for the paid for larger handluggage, because the overhead only fits say 50 bags and the plan sits 70 passengers. So they sell less overhead to make sure it fits

fungibletoken · 20/11/2023 11:58

I'd either return them and get ones that fit, or pay for a suitcase in the hold. Anecdotally I've seen them checking the size of and weighing hand luggage more and more in the last few years and the fines are pretty eye-watering, as you say. I wouldn't expect to get away with it on a short-haul flight where a lot of people seem to travel hand luggage only nowadays - they have to be strict because there isn't the overhead space.

SabrinaThwaite · 20/11/2023 12:03

Look at Cabin Metz and Cabin Zero for bags designed to fit airline dimensions. I have these as they also have compression straps so you can squish plenty in. I get about 6 days worth of clothes, a spare pair of shoes plus a decent day sack inside these.

I have seen bags at Gatwick being checked - particularly hard shell or framed wheely bags.

Movinghouseatlast · 20/11/2023 12:08

They are too big. They won't fit under the seat. You will probably have to pay extra at the airport.

There is no debate on the size of the bag, surely? It's bigger than the size they state as allowable.

Last month at Exeter They checked every single bag and fined everyone who had a too big bag. I was sitting right next to the bag sizer.

If you pay for speedy boarding you can take a bigger hold bag which hoes in the overhead locker. If you don't then it has to be the smaller size bag.

FarEast · 20/11/2023 12:13

Unless you pay for a cabin bag that goes in the locker overhead, you have to put your bag under the seat in front of you.

Most cheap airlines do this now because there were too many cabin bags for the overhead lockers.

So now there are3 categories:
small squishy bag that goes under the seat in front of you ( I use my backpack and I still have reasonable space for my feet!)

small conventional cabin sized suitcase - you pay extra for that so you have a space in the overhead lockers

Checked-in suitcase

OMGitsnotgood · 20/11/2023 12:15

The wheels won't squish in to the bag sizer. I was on an Easyjet flight a couple of weeks ago and boarding was delayed somewhat by the number of people having to check bag size, arguing the toss, then having to pay up anyway. Cheaper to pay for the bigger cabin bag in the first place.

Mumbunz · 20/11/2023 12:17

Thanks for confirming my suspicion. Looks like I'll have to cancel 😕my order from Amazon and grab a couple of backpacks instead.

@Chersfrozenface @Zamzamzamdeedah
It was the exact dimensions for a "small cabin bag". I made sure after OH being caught out with previous case.
That's why I asked the girl how it was possible and she didn't answer.

Mumbunz · 20/11/2023 12:23

I can't even cancel the order; it's due for delivery tomorrow . And returning these luggages would be such a fuss 😩. It's not like you can just pop them in an envelope and send them back.

At least it's a lot easier to return to Amazon these days than it used to be.
