Any chance there could be issues with cabin luggage on EasyJet?

Mumbunz · 20/11/2023 09:12

We're gearing up for our EasyJet flight and decided to add an extra 23 kg luggage to our ticket. Our ticket already includes an under-seat bag, meant to be around 45 x 36 x 20 cm, as EasyJet specifies. I've recently picked up two suitcases from Amazon, but they're actually 33 x 20 x 55 cm. Do you think they'll be fine for our flight, or is there a chance we might have issues with the size?

These are the sort of thing that'll fit under the seat in front.

The top rolls over so they're very squishable.

BronwenFrideswide · 20/11/2023 12:26

Amazon have a huge selection of bags that fit under the seat for Ryanair, EasyJet etc. I bought one last year for Ryanair who are even more strict and it was a perfect fit!

Returning goods to Amazon isn't that hard, can you not refuse the delivery? Contact Amazon and they will tell you what to do.

Roussette · 20/11/2023 12:32

Go to TK Maxx. They sell loads of backpacks, take a tape measure with you. I bought a brilliant under the seat one for about £7.99, lots of pockets, it's perfect for EJ

RaraRachael · 20/11/2023 12:34

@Roussette Can you share a link or pic please as I don't want to get caught by the cabin bag police again 😁

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 20/11/2023 12:36

We flew with Easyjet last year, and got charged for our cabin bag being slightly too big (was fine on all the other airlines we had previously taken it on...) They DO sometimes check!! We weren't the only ones. But then on the flight back noone bothered!

A pic of my backpack? They won't sell that particular one anymore as it was last year and just one on it's own, but they always have loads in there that would be suitable!

AvengedQuince · 20/11/2023 12:39

The size is clearly marked on those Amazon suitcases, I don't understand why you ordered them? Do you have no rucksacks at home? DS recently flew easyjet and just took his college backpack, it was 45cm with the other dimensions under.

Everanewbie · 20/11/2023 12:39

Good decision OP.

I'm a big fan of the budget airline model. You have a base service that gets you to where you want to go. Then you have the option to add various bolt on building blocks that you may need or want, such as a seat preference, getting on the plane first, luggage, food, drink. It works on the premise that someone who wants all those services can access them, but they'll pay a great deal more than someone who feels that those things are superfluous.

The people that I've witnessed that have a problem with it are those that either willfully ignore the clear T&Cs, pretend that they don't apply to them, or feel hard done by when they're held to them.

AvengedQuince · 20/11/2023 12:44

@Everanewbie I like the budget airline model too. I only have to pay for what I need!

Exactly! If I'm flying to a city an hour away, and I'm bringing a laptop and spare pair of knickers I don't want my ticket cost to subsidise someone taking the kitchen sink!

I'm glad OP asked the question now rather than get a big charge at the gate and write a post asking AIBU to hate EJ for charging me (despite me ticking a box prior to payment saying that I agree to the T&C and baggage limits)?

I can't even cancel the order; it's due for delivery tomorrow . And returning these luggages would be such a fuss 😩. It's not like you can just pop them in an envelope and send them back.

Don't accept the delivery and it will return

laclochette · 20/11/2023 12:58

Good shout OP, better safe than sorry!
I usually just use a bag I will also want to use on the trip. So if I'm going on a beach holiday I take my big rattan beach bag as hand luggage! If I'm going on a city break I just use whatever (inevitably large) handbag I'll be carrying around with me during the day. And so on.

Desolatewardrobe · 20/11/2023 13:01

I'd recommend the Cabin Max style compressable backpack too. You can get a lot into them and they are the right size.

Chersfrozenface · 20/11/2023 13:04

RaraRachael · 20/11/2023 12:23

@Chersfrozenface @Zamzamzamdeedah
It was the exact dimensions for a "small cabin bag". I made sure after OH being caught out with previous case.
That's why I asked the girl how it was possible and she didn't answer.

If you're sure your bag was the correct dimensions, the only way it wouldn't fut the baggage gauge is if the gauge itself was undersized.

If that's what happened, as well as complaining to the airline, you should complain to the Civil Aviation Authority and contact consumer champions such as the Consumer Association and media outlets (print and broadcast). The BBC has Watchdog and You And Yours, for instance

FlyBe was forced to refund an excess charge when a non-FlyBe sizer was used - I wonder if something like that happened.

Court orders Flybe to reimburse customer who was charged excess for his baggage

FLYBE has lost the battle against a customer who took the airline to a small claims court after he was charged for excess baggage on a bag he said had been compliant many times before.

SabrinaThwaite · 20/11/2023 13:15

I think you can get EJ sized soft luggage but if you overstuff it then it might not fit. This is why I have ones with compression straps.

Mrsbadger77 · 20/11/2023 13:16

They are strict , speaking from experience, I wouldn't risk it

Everanewbie · 20/11/2023 13:27

@Desolatewardrobe that's shocking. Something similar happened to a relative. Generally, I defend the budget airline luggage allowances, and haven't much time for the Daily Mail 'sad face' winging when people just ignore T&C then and come a cropper. But shenanigans like this from flybe breaks that 'play by the rules for a bargain' contract with customers.

Thankfully, the two luggate I just bought aren't hard-shelled; they're actually squishy. So, I'm hoping if they ask us to fit them into a case size checker, I might be able to squish them in. What I'm really worried about is whether they're too fussy with their luggage rules or if they can be flexible. The more I go over their luggage policy, the more it freaks me out. It's almost like they wrote it to scare people off.

They’re really fussy.

StarlightLady · 20/11/2023 13:31

Save hassle. Return the new bags and buy the right size. Remember, the smaller the bag the less you have to carry too.

StarlightLady · 20/11/2023 13:33

The Flybe example up thread is different. It appears that the airline said the bag was oversized when it wasn't.

Deathbyfluffy · 20/11/2023 13:33

Mumbunz · 20/11/2023 10:54

Apologies for any confusion earlier. I just wanted to clarify that I didn't pay extra for cabin luggage. I only paid for the 23 kg check in luggage, and I'm not concerned about its dimensions. However, my main worry is about the standard luggage allowance, specifically the one that fits under the seat. I'm a bit anxious about whether my luggage will be accepted since it's 10 cm larger than the allowed size. The luggage I bought is this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01F2M321O?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

That doesn't explain why you'd buy a bag 10cm bigger than the allowance - surely if you bought the luggage for the flight, you'd have checked the size first?!

If you want to max out your underseat bag capacity then Aerolite Minimax cases are on Black Friday deals on Amazon and on the aerolite website

They fit perfectly and hold a vast amount

Thank you! I've just ordered one. The olive colour looks great, but it wasn't available, so I ordered navy instead. Thanks for sharing, especially since I was looking for something with wheels.

No they wrote it with regard to the actual space available under seats. Bearing in mind that the overhead lockers will be full of the cases of passengers who paid for that option.
