Any chance there could be issues with cabin luggage on EasyJet?

We're gearing up for our EasyJet flight and decided to add an extra 23 kg luggage to our ticket. Our ticket already includes an under-seat bag, meant to be around 45 x 36 x 20 cm, as EasyJet specifies. I've recently picked up two suitcases from Amazon, but they're actually 33 x 20 x 55 cm. Do you think they'll be fine for our flight, or is there a chance we might have issues with the size?

You haven’t paid for extra cabin bag so you only get one bag that MUST fit under the seat infront. Sometimes they check every bag sometimes they don’t. More likely to get away with a slightly oversized squashy backpack than a suitcase. You’ll be taking a gamble with your suitcase which is longer rather than wider which is easier to squash!

Thankfully, the two luggate I just bought aren't hard-shelled; they're actually squishy. So, I'm hoping if they ask us to fit them into a case size checker, I might be able to squish them in. What I'm really worried about is whether they're too fussy with their luggage rules or if they can be flexible. The more I go over their luggage policy, the more it freaks me out. It's almost like they wrote it to scare people off.

What is the relevance of the 23kg bag

JustinOtherdad · 20/11/2023 10:19

Your new cases will be fine as cabin cases if you've paid for them in addition to the included under-seat bag.

Good rule of thumb is the under-seat bag is a 'normal' backpack size or large handbag. Anything bigger needs to go in the overhead bins and EasyJet will charge you for it.

Zamzamzamdeedah · 20/11/2023 10:19

As pps said the 23kg is one hold suitcase.
Under seats are small (actually still can hold quite a lot surprisingly!) and yours are bigger.
It's quite easy and they even have pictures with dimensions to help.
Small cabin bag - Under seat
Large cabin bag - Cabin/carry on goes into above storage
Hold (checked-in in 3 sizes/weights)

You have the first and the last. If you rock up with the second, you will most likely have to pay extra

MistyMountainTop · 20/11/2023 10:19

When I booked Easyjet in September this year, paying for a 23kg checked in bag also gave me a larger cabin bag and an underseat bag. I might have done it by booking a front 3 rows seat, I can't remember. But if the bag is squashy it will get into the size checker as long as you don't stuff it massively full.

eurochick · 20/11/2023 10:26

I'm also confused. The 23kg you have bought is a hold bag. It can be whatever size you like as long as it is not more than 23 kg. You check it in when you get to the airport.

The suitcases you have bought are too big to be the under seat bags. You might get away with it but it is unlikely.

You need to check what you have bought.

if you have bought a cabin bag, the weight limit is 15kg and needs to meet their size requirements, you may have a bit or wiggle room if it’s squishy

If you have bought a hold bag then the weight limit is 23kg and the bag can be any size frankly but Will obviously have to go under the plane

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 20/11/2023 10:40

I think it will need to go in the size checker with minimal squashing. I've definitely seen people who've effectively just been tucking in handles and things being told they've 'forced' the bag in and therefore it doesn't fit.

Chersfrozenface · 20/11/2023 10:50

You've bought two suitcases 33 x 20 x 55 cm to use as under seat bags - what Easyjet calls "small cabin bags"

You say they are squishy. I take it that the suitcases have soft sides

The problem is the length - 55cm when Easyjet's limit is 45cm. They may have soft sides, but do they have an interior frame that means they can't be reduced from 55cm to 45cm? If do, you may struggle to get them to fit under the seat in front.

If Easyjet staff notice that, thr may charge you.

mondaytosunday · 20/11/2023 10:52

They are not flexible.

Mumbunz · 20/11/2023 10:54

Apologies for any confusion earlier. I just wanted to clarify that I didn't pay extra for cabin luggage. I only paid for the 23 kg check in luggage, and I'm not concerned about its dimensions. However, my main worry is about the standard luggage allowance, specifically the one that fits under the seat. I'm a bit anxious about whether my luggage will be accepted since it's 10 cm larger than the allowed size. The luggage I bought is this one:

If your ticket includes one underseat bag per person, that is basically a handbag or rucksack that fits under the seat in front. And nothing else. You can't even take two handbags, or a handbag and a tote, for example. If you want to take a bigger or extra piece of luggage, you'll need to pay for the seats that come with bigger locker-sized hand luggage.

Btw I used to work in the industry, and the reason for this system is that there isn't enough space on aeroplanes for everyone to put big hand luggage in the overhead lockers. There's only enough space for about half the number of passengers to have one of the small suitcases we've all got so used to taking on as hand luggage. Those overhead lockers were really only designed for coats and small bags!

Initially, low cost airlines encouraged us all not to take hold luggage by charging us for it (less hold luggage saves them time and money). But we've ended up going too far the other way, with everyone doing their best to take hand luggage only.

This has led to lots of people having their hand luggage cases taken off them at boarding and put into the hold due to lack of cabin space, which understandably makes them angry and upset.

So, airlines have had to start only giving a certain percentage of passengers the right to bigger bits of hand luggage.

No, that will not fit under the seat, a backpack that has slightly bigger dimensions will because it’s soft but that is structured and will be too long and wide. That is a cabin bag for the overhead lockers, you will not be able to take that

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 20/11/2023 10:56

The 'free' hand luggage bag just has to be soft and able to be put under the seat in front of you. Honestly they paid zero attention to what kind of bags we had and how many last time I flew but you never know.

laclochette · 20/11/2023 10:57

@Mumbunz no that definitely won't be allowed. If you don't pay for the large item of hand luggage, you are allowed basically a handbag or rucksack. Not a piece of luggage. It has to fit under the seat in front.

Zamzamzamdeedah · 20/11/2023 10:57

The measurements are not really there for fun, but so things would fit where they are supposed to. On every flight there was at least 1 peraon with what should be checked bag trying to stuff it into overheads and having hissy fits that it needs to go to hold.
I would just return these and buy something in a correct size

No that's the wrong kind of bag. It needs to be soft so it can fit under the seat. Grip/sports bags are fine, as are backpacks but not this.

Zamzamzamdeedah · 20/11/2023 10:58

That's not squishy. Something like gym bag would be

BrightYellowDaffodil · 20/11/2023 11:01

Honestly, you're not going to be able to squash that under the seat or into the size checker boxes. You'll either have to pay for putting them in the overhead bins or take smaller bags - can you return these ones?

The big carriers are a lot more relaxed about sizes and weights IME but the budget airlines are incredibly strict. It's not worth the worry in the run up to the flight and the stress at the gate when they stop you.

Wishiwasatailor · 20/11/2023 11:01

Definitely won’t fit. 23kg plus a cabin suitcase? That’s a lot of stuff! I’m currently on holiday with a 23kg and 2 backpacks for a family of 3!
you need something like this

boozeclues · 20/11/2023 11:03

I wouldn’t risk that bag for under seat luggage. I flew east jet this year and bought one of Bag 45x36x20 for Easyjet Airlines Underseat Travel Bag Holdall Bag Carry on Hand Luggage Weekend Bag for Women and Men (Denim Grey 25L) amzn.eu/d/7251VLY these (bargain actually), and meets all the required dimensions.

I did manage to fit a weeks worth of clothes but purposely packed light as I was holidaying in a tiny camper van after my flight.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 20/11/2023 11:03

And it’s not about them being overly strict with the rules or making allowances, that literally won’t fit under the seat

fortygin · 20/11/2023 11:08

Hi just travelled with EasyJet recently and for the first time ever, they are making you put your case in a ‘frame’ at the gate. Ie if your hand luggage is over a certain size and won’t fit in the frame, they are charging you and putting in the hold. This is especially an issue if you have a hard case.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 20/11/2023 11:10

If you have a hold bag why are you trying to take two cases on the plane? Just put your stuff in the hold bag and keep essentials in a small rucksack or similar which will fit under the seat.

#confused

And yes, people are trying to take more and more hand luggage on board planes because hold baggage goes missing.
