Anyone else had a terrible year?

I am sure you don't want my list of exactly how shit 2023 has been but roll on 2024!

I read about the ritual of opening the window to let the year out just before midnight on 31/12 then opening the door at midnight to let the New Year in. Any other rituals I should know about?

Yes crap. Three deaths, two family and one close friend that was very unexpected.

Only New Year's ritual I have heard of is first footing. Maybe will try the open door/window this year?! Anything to have a better year than this one!

Aurasauras · 19/11/2023 11:16

@Mothership4two sorry to hear that. I hope 2024 brings you good luck, good health and abundance.

Absolutely horrific year. I’ve not heard of the window opening ritual but I’m definitely going to do it ….. I’ll try anything for a better year next year.

Here’s to a better 2024 for all of us.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 19/11/2023 11:25

Yep, cancer again not even 12 months since the last one! Will be trying all superstitions- not going to do any harm!!

CrimsonPig · 19/11/2023 11:29

I'd never heard of this but I'm up for trying anything.

Family deaths, mental health problems, husband extremely mentally ill, divorce looks like a horrible possibility. I'm an absolute shell.

I'm not superstitious but I'll join in whatever is suggested.

Sorry everyone else is having such a terrible time.

2jacqi · 19/11/2023 11:38

@Aurasauras I lost my mum, my sister and my daughter in 13 months! I dont think I will ever recover from the last one.

fluffiphlox · 19/11/2023 11:42

My mum used to open the back door at midnight to let the old year out, then open the front door to let the new year in.

The first footer goes out of the back door to let the old year out of and in the front to let the NY in.

Mothership4two · 19/11/2023 11:45

@Bbq1 with a lump of coal for some reason?!

Lizzbear · 19/11/2023 11:49

I'm sorry for all of you that have illnesses and bereavements this year
I've had lots of anxiety this year
Hoping next year is better for all of us

Pinchaperfect · 19/11/2023 11:58

Yes, awful year. mastectomy, tumour removed from my heart. was cancer free for four months. Then it came back and has spread to my liver and other places.

I have heard about the door opening ritual - cant recall any others.

Lannielou · 19/11/2023 12:01

We as a family were made homeless in Febuary, we are still homeless. Will be spending Christmas in a homeless hostel.

I will deffo be opening the window because 2023 can just piss off

PinkyFlamingo · 19/11/2023 12:03

Probably the worst year I've had for some time, my husband of 25 years left a few months ago, completely out of the blue and has been horrific since. So roll on next year!

HeyNando · 19/11/2023 12:03

Yep.

Daughters mental health went to hell.

The rest of us followed suit.

Lost my job.

Marriage went haywire.

Fucking good riddance to this year.

Bbq1 · 19/11/2023 12:04

Mothership4two · 19/11/2023 11:45

@Bbq1 with a lump of coal for some reason?!

Yes, my dad used to be carry the coal! It symbolises warmth I think and from that prosperity and good fortune!

BlackeyedSusan · 19/11/2023 12:09

just emerging from grief of Mum dying last year. Got sod all help coping with that from anyone who was not going through similar themselves. and many many other things that have nearly sent me under. none of which were partiucularly bad in themselves but on top of loss of regular respite care for the children (both autistic) and coping with getting diagnosed with my own disability have been for too many straws/ bundles of straw for this camels back.

CaroleSinger · 19/11/2023 12:20

I think we all have years that are our worst. Mine was 2012. This year however has been extremely challenging for different reasons, but life fluctuates. Sometimes shit, sometimes not shit, sometimes shit. It's about bending with the blows and just going with what you can't change knowing that further down the line your current situation won't have the same intense all consuming grip. Next year will bring different shit to deal with.

Huge hugs 2jacqi and to all others suffering. It's like losing a limb, or walking around with your heart missing ❤️❤️. I din't think we ever get over some things, we just learn to live with them.

I lost my mum in January and have had some health issues and money issues this year. It hasn't been the best year. I think 2016 was the year that I remember being the most positive and I'd love 2024 to be more like that year.

KezzabellaB · 19/11/2023 13:00

The last 6 weeks have been absolutely horrendous and still are 😞 I absolutely cannot wait to see the back of this year.
Sorry everyone else is having a crappy time of it.

Aurasauras · 19/11/2023 13:01

I don't know if it helps but for those missing people they have lost, going back and reliving those memories of when you were all together and life was good for an hour or two does help me- see it, feel it experience it as if you are there. It brings a little comfort.

Sorry to hear everyone else has been experiencing such a bad year Flowers
