Ridiculous comments about red hair

My child has a lot of fiery red hair. They are a year old.

They get lots of nice comments - old ladies in particular love him.

However I get some weird ones too. ‘Still ginger’, one of my friends comments whenever they see him.

Well this morning on the train, a woman came up to me to tell me my child would be very badly bullied at school because of the way they look.

They are one year old. Why would someone come and say that to me? It is absolutely bizarre.

Interestingly, the three Irish people I've known the most have all been dark-haired. (Two NI Protestants, one Dublin Catholic)

Dark hair is by far the most common hair colour in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The red head cliche is odd - from vague estimation, they're low in numbers, and I'd actually say red heads are mostly Ulster Scots ... Who are obviously of a Scottish extraction. In turn I have to wonder if those Scots were of Scandinavian extraction originally.

Celts were supposed to have moved up from Spain & Portugal, weren't they? So it makes sense that we have dark hair but skin colour lightened up due to lack of sunlight etc.

As for Catholics and protestants.... What doesn't fit with Sinn Fein and Unionist dogma is that we're all inter married and mixed and converted across religions, over hundreds of years. It's obvious eg through all the names - loads of Catholics with English & Scottish names. There are millions of "Doherty's" of both religions here. My family is Donegal Irish mixed with Ulster Scots.
Ethnically (and looks wise which you seem to be referring to) there is no divide, but as I said Sinn Fein etc and others don't like to acknowledge that.

YANBU. You always get weirdos saying rude stuff on public transport, it's par for the course alas.

FWIW, the handsomest man I ever met had red hair (well, strawberry blond). Women throwing themselves at him all over the place and I doubt he was bullied in school.

Yeah I met a red head young guy through tennis club - tall ish, strapping, fairly goodlooking and super confident and outgoing; he had what other members referred to as the "fan club" (a collection of girls who hung around him).

Please don’t question Robert Redford’s redhead genes. That’s just rude. He’s one of the hottest men on the planet, ageing well with naturally red hair (ginger/ strawberry blonde/ pedant) and piercing blue eyes….. sorry, did you say I have a crush 😻

I think I've only seen him in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and I'm pretty sure he was blonde in that. I saw him in that because I feel about Paul Newman the way you feel about RR. I wouldn't care what colour hair Paul Newman had.

Thinking about it I think the freckles have bothered me more than the ginger. I have lots of the bloody things, arms/hands and of course face. I don't even sunbathe, wear factor 50 all the time and still I have them and every spring they take on a whole new life of their own. I think they are OK when you're a child or young adult but when you get old I think they are far from flattering.

Having said all that lots of men seemed to like freckles when I was young and single.

UnctuousUnicorns · 19/11/2023 14:00

"I really, really dislike the word 'ginger' for it as it was used in school and beyond as a pejorative term"

Agreed (red haired daughter). I only use the word "ginger" to refer to the root/spice.

We stopped buying Milka chocolate after their casting call for kids for advertising specified no red heads.

😲 What??!! That's outrageous! 🤬

There's nothing wrong with freckles. To let other people convince you otherwise puts you in alignment with people like my mother, who delightedly phoned me one day to tell me that she'd seen a TV show and did I know that I could get somebody to cover my face in acid to 'burn those filthy things off' and maybe with time, I'd be able to get them to do it to my hands and arms as well.

Edited

Plenty of redheads around here in Cork. 13% of Irish and Scots , the highest proportion in the world. If Scandinavia were the origin of the gene there would be a higher proportion up there. Most people here have dark or brown hair. I've never heard people insulting or bullying redheads though. Too many around I suppose.

I haven't let anyone convince me, I don't like them and I like them less now that I am old.

If you like them that's great for you but I don't, I'd like a complexion that is one colour. I think they are ageing, linked to age spots. We don't all like the same things do we and on top of that I'd like to be able to sit in the sun without burning as the other joy of my red haired, freckled life is I burn horribly and have had skin lessions removed and have to be vigilant about skin cancer.

I'm a fellow ginger. Have had the comments all my life too and, as I got older, especially the inexplicable fascination with the colour of,our pubes.

Red hair is gorgeous and as your child gets, older they will realise that lots and lots of women spend an absolutely fortune paying to have their hair dyed the same colour as they have got for free.

Men like red hair
A lot.

Really? All men? I think men have various preferences.
