Ridiculous comments about red hair

SweetSouls · 18/11/2023 12:41

My child has a lot of fiery red hair. They are a year old.

They get lots of nice comments - old ladies in particular love him.

However I get some weird ones too. ‘Still ginger’, one of my friends comments whenever they see him.

Well this morning on the train, a woman came up to me to tell me my child would be very badly bullied at school because of the way they look.

They are one year old. Why would someone come and say that to me? It is absolutely bizarre.

But she is equating this what people of colour experience. Which is wrong and minimises their experiences.

It's also based in Antisemitism. Judas, for example, is portrayed with red hair - it's also seen frequently in Ashkenazi heritage.

Or are we not allowed to consider that anymore?

I have red hair and have experienced my fair share of bullying about it, especially when younger. Grown men shouting at me about the colour of my pubes when I was 13, random strangers shouting nasty comments in the street, the old "gingers have no souls" " it could be worse, I could be ginger". I can't see how we are just meant to shrug it off. It's horrible

I know exactly what you mean. I'm sick of being told I'm too sensitive.

For you Flowers

EightOfHearts · 18/11/2023 14:05

Sorry that happened to you OP!

My 9 month old son has red hair which was a bit of a surprise - everyone on both sides of the family have brown hair so that's what we were expecting. The only ginger we can find is my husband's great grandfather and no Irish or Scottish connection as far as records go back. He was initially born with dark brown hair but it all fell out and came back red.

I was initially a bit worried as all the boys I remember from school who were ginger got bullied and I didn't want this to happen. However I've had so many nice compliments from mainly strangers but also friends and family that I feel really positively about it now and wouldn't change it.

If someone said something nasty I would definitely call them out on it but thankfully this hasn't happened yet.

Itsbritneybitch22 · 18/11/2023 14:06

Luckily for him that he is going to grow up in a better world than these people who are making comments, children are being taught differently to how we was growing up.

The anti red headed comments in the uk are something to behold.

I follow this girl on Instagram and she is absolutely beautiful with stunning red/auburn hair and blue? Green? eyes. Here. All her posts are gorgeous! There's another girl I'll try and find.

But essentially I can't understand and have never understood the teasing about Red hair. It is the most gorgeous hair colour in my opinion.

Until the last few comments of this thread, I never saw teasing of red hair as actual historic prejudice against Celtic origin minorities. That is interesting.

It's bad to be nasty to anyone of any age but your DS is still a baby. That makes it even worse in my book.

Thursa · 18/11/2023 14:14

Youngest son is a red head. I only heard one person say anything negative, and it was an old woman who asked if he got bullied because of his hair. He never did. And I never allowed him to be called ginger, it was always red head.

He’s in his 20’s now and his hair is halfway down his back and he has a full red beard too.

PolkaDotPinUp · 18/11/2023 14:15

My daughter gets called an orangutan and a ginger cunt daily. She is 12. Yes, of course I raised her to be proud of her red hair, to take no notice of idiots, but she hates herself, calls herself ugly and constantly sends me links for blonde hair dye. It breaks my heart that those little shits can make her feel like that, they have no idea.

merryhouse · 18/11/2023 14:17

"Gingers have no souls"? That's a new one on me. Whereabouts does this come from, please?

I have red hair (though it's going white now sob it was bright orange in my teens). Grew up in the East Midlands of England, currently living in the North East of England. In both places there were enough other redheads for me not to feel like some kind of exotic creature. There were some rude remarks but I didn't care about them.

(My viola teacher once commented "I don't think I've ever taught three redheads on the trot before..." Only one of the others was my sister Grin)

Interestingly, the three Irish people I've known the most have all been dark-haired. (Two NI Protestants, one Dublin Catholic)

I like her look but her hair looks dyed red to me.

This is heartbreaking. @PolkaDotPinUp sending hugs to your DD and you. Is there any way to take her out of the environment where this is happening? It doesn’t happen everywhere.

There used to be a lot of superstitions around redheads, accusing them of witchcraft etc. Probably connected to that.

That was my experience growing up. I even had a boyfriend say he couldn't sleep with me because my ginger pubic hair put him off. I was heartbroken at the time, but now realise he was a cunt.

However, if this is said to you daily you feel shame at being different. I was also called orangutan and it really hurt. My father called me a ginger headed bitch once ( he was abusive) so I got it from all sides.

As soon as I could pay for it myself I bleached my hair so that I wouldn't have to live with the hated ginger hair.

Newgirls · 18/11/2023 14:21

That person is not your friend. Wow. Don’t see them again.

WingingItSince1973 · 18/11/2023 14:23

I do not understand why people think they have the right to comment on anyone's colour, looks, height etc. I adore red hair. To the extent I've just died mine from bleached blonde to ginger. Just feel sorry for those ignorant people OP. Sorry it happened though xxx

My daughter (22 months) and I got called Cooper Nobs by a random man in a supermarket recently! He looked disgusted by us quite frankly

notfeeblebutPhoebe · 18/11/2023 14:27

There is progress because when I was young a boy with glasses, friend of my brother, was 'Gigs'. Giglamps! Not unusual
Not read the thread but has anyone asked Harry or Megs for opinions on hair colour?

LNY1986 · 18/11/2023 14:27

Why is it not the same?

Is hair colour less important than skin colour?

You cannot help what colour hair or skin you are born with.

So it IS the same.

Skin colour is no more important than hair colour!!

weleasewoderick23 · 18/11/2023 14:27

To be honest, red hair is having a fashion moment. Look at Stacey Dooley.

But that's a choice, when you're born with it it's just not the same.

Jesus is often portrayed with red hair, so your comment makes no sense.

If anything, Judas is often portrayed as darker skinned than the others.
