To eat this cream

We've got a tin of squirty cream in the fridge which has been in there for ages. I don't use it much but it's handy for cooking.
Today DH bought some mince pies and I warmed one up, only to discover that he'd forgotten to get cream.

Anyway, I thought I might as well use the squirty cream. It said Best Before Oct 11th. I tried some and it tasted fine so I used it.

DH says he won't risk it but I'm sure it's okay so I had some.

AIBU?

I wouldn't eat it - it's well over a month past it's date!

Kwasi · 17/11/2023 18:16

I'd eat it if it smelled OK.

VisionsOfSplendour · 17/11/2023 18:17

I would eat it if it seems fine when you squirt it out, it's easy to see if it's gone watery

Out of interest what do you cook with squirty cream? Are you the lady from the thread the other day 😜

Zanatdy · 17/11/2023 18:17

Yeah I’d eat it if looked and smelt ok

Luxell934 · 17/11/2023 18:17

You’d be risking a dodgy stomach over the weekend.

ibblebibbledibble · 17/11/2023 18:19

If it tastes fine I’d eat it.
also what are you cooking with squirty cream?!

YoureALizardHarry11 · 17/11/2023 18:19

Dairy often lasts way past its date I find. Squirty cream is sweetened which should help preserve it also. If it looked and smelled ok then yeah I’d eat it!

IMarchToADifferentDrummer · 17/11/2023 18:20

I'd leave it, but OH would eat it.
Personal choice!!

AhBiscuits · 17/11/2023 18:21

Dairy can last ages.

TheIsleOfTheLost · 17/11/2023 18:21

Taste it before adding to a pie but totally fine to use your own senses to check food. I would prefer no cream anyway, so no great loss if it is rancid.

I add it to chicken sauces sometimes. Chicken korma for example.

I also add it to home made tomato soup.

And mushroom and garlic sauce is yummy with a few squirts added.

There's cream in the recipe! I can't taste the difference when I use fresh cream or squirty cream.

But it's SWEET op 😳

I wouldn't have eaten it but I'm really wary since two bad bouts of food poisoning in the beginning of the year.

Catza · 17/11/2023 18:42

Best before is not the same as use by. It is not past the expiry date, just past the date when it looks, smells and tastes it’s best

Yes, but chicken korma and tomato soup both have sugar in the recipes.

I had cream slightly too long out of the fridge once. It looked and smelt fine.

I was so ill the next day, if I wasn't in bed asleep or rolling in pain, I had my head down the toilet.

I wouldn't do it again.

PieonaBarm · 17/11/2023 20:14

I sniff test everything. If it smelt ok I'd eat it, I reckon me and DH must have guts of steel because as long as it smells ok we will generally eat it.

I'm the same but DH is terrified of things which are out of date.
He wanted to throw the squirty cream out after I'd had some earlier on.

But I might want more later.

Hmm nope! Sometimes things smell ok but aren’t. I thought cream and milk were fine if they smell ok but they can still have nasty bacteria. As for cooking with, that’s vile in my opinion!!

Mamato29192 · 17/11/2023 20:27

I'd eat it if it looked and smelt okay
