To think encouraging people to send chocolate secretly is not a good idea?

So Cadbury do this thing where you can send chocolate anonymously to someone. AIBU to think this is not something to be encouraged? I'd be disturbed receiving unexpected chocolate to my home address.

But it puts the idea into their minds
One real issue with the case was police failing to take warning signs seriously
A major marketing campaign very much plays into the hands of men wanting to make unwanted grand gestures to women
And oh, look a lovely excuse kindly provided by Cadburys

I have every sympathy with any woman who's had a stalker or experienced male violence, but are we really saying that companies shouldn't offer a service which many people would like, just because some people would not? Cadbury aren't 'encouraging people' to do things any more than any advert is. They are just advertising a service. Besides, if someone wants to send you something and can find out where you live, there's nothing stopping them. At least if it comes directly from a company you know it's a legitimate item.

So it's a "safer" way to harass people through the mail?

Confused No. It's a way for people to send one particular brand of product anonymously through the mail, which they can already do, with absolutely any other postable-sized item they like, whether they're your mate, your granny, a stalker or a serial killer. At least with a delivery direct from a company, you know what the stuff is that you're receiving. I'm just a bit baffled that you think nobody (dodgy or otherwise) would think of doing this if it weren't for Cadbury 'putting it into their heads'.

LumpyPumpkin · 17/11/2023 11:50

What do you mean by 'if anything goes wrong'? What could go wrong? Why would Cadbury need the sender's details?

I can't think of another campaign that encourages secrecy. I really disliked the ones that encouraged children to keep secrets.

Thank you. Yes I think maybe it depends if you've already experienced the anonymous gift/creepy scenario.

Yes its chocolate, yes chocolate is nice but that doesn't make this a frivolous thing to do.

If this is something you’ve given more than 86 seconds thought on you’re a lucky human.

I agree with this. Do you seriously think there are dozens of people out there who are desperate to stalk someone and can't think of any way to do it until they find out about the Cadbury scheme? We can't stop everything happening in the world because it might trigger or upset a small number of people.

ExcellentFabulous · 18/11/2023 19:50

Yes but if they suddenly got your address, they probably wouldn't be saying, right let me send her some Cadbury chocs. They'd be sending you something else or even if they send the chocs, they'd still do more than that.

In other words, the issue isn't the Cadbury chocs, it's that they've got your address whether Cadbury chocs exists or not.

But I hear you, fears and phobias are real whether reasonable or not. So I can't blame you. I just don't think it's as bad as you think it is.

Mum2jenny · 18/11/2023 19:53

I just cannot get why you would want to send chocolate to someone anonymously.
and I don’t get how the voting is!

Mum2jenny · 18/11/2023 19:55

OP is apparently unreasonable by a huge majority, I must disagree. If I were ever sent chocolate anonymously, I’d bin it.

Toomanycaketins · 18/11/2023 20:01

What if someone’s dog ate it?

What if someone’s dog ate it?

Surely if someone had a dog and there was a chance it might die from eating something that could be put through the post box, you’d take steps to keep the dog away from the post?

Toomanycaketins · 18/11/2023 20:01

What if someone’s dog ate it?

Are you concerned you wouldn't know who to blame if it had been sent anonymously?

Whiteday · 18/11/2023 20:53

Toomanycaketins · 18/11/2023 20:01

What if someone’s dog ate it?

Or their diabetic child
Or their lactose intolerant daughter
Or their obese son

I mean the possibilities are totally endless..

Toomanycaketins · 18/11/2023 21:26

It’s not just the letterbox part, but if you had a pile of post on a table - an anonymous slim brown parcel for example, a labrador could happily sniff that out and snaffle it before the owner knew what was in it or to put it away.

I think I remember a situation where a drug company sent bars of chocolate to vets as a promotional thing… there was a bit of a backlash for that reason.

wesurecouldstandgladioli · 18/11/2023 21:28

As long as it’s clear it’s from Cadbury’s and delivered by Royal Mail Parcelforce, I will eat it. Otherwise, it might be syringed with Rohypnol.

Yeah it's almost a given that would happen! Although labradors are quite intelligent, so surely they'd read who it was addressed to and know it's not for them?

So lots of dogs in the vets were roaming round off lead examining post? I don't think so!

Rosme · 18/11/2023 22:45

Weird. I wouldn’t eat something that I didn’t know where it came from and anyone who does is a fool.

But then I remember the guy who put the razor blades and glass shards in baby food.

Where were those items bought from? A shop?

That must make shopping tricky or are you quite happy to buy food that been through a long food chain and sat on a supermarket shelf where anyone could tamper with it but draw the line at something delivered packaged from the factory/promotion company warehouse?

I kind of get your get drift. Obviously what Cadbury send will be in bloody obvious Cadbury packaging. But people could lace a bar and send it out or post masquerading as free Cadbury choc and someone will fall for it.

Humans just aren’t very nice are they.

It gladdens my blackened heart to see someone else on here demonstrating the security mindset.

If someone's going to go to that length, then they'll be quite capeable of making it look like it's come from a friend, which is probably easier than making it look like Cadbury packing.
