The chocolate is gross but the family totally sold out on all their principles. Disgusting.

Wouldn't buy that shite if you paid me.

I think the chocolate got worse but describing it as vile maybe a step too far.

If you want someone that is not nice try American chocolate.

It’s an interesting history and a big part of the company was their ethics and relationship with the community. They’ve left an indelible legacy in Birmingham, and I think people in the UK generally have a strong attachment to the brand. I was disappointed when US companies took over.

I think it’s one of the most well known family companies in the UK? I know my uni chancellor or deacon or whatevs was a Cadbury. Not sure he was anything to do with the chocolate though. It tastes like soap to me.

I agree @Worriedmum159 . Am quite surprised at the lack of knowledge of the history of the Cadbury Family.

They were a Quaker family who lived out their beliefs through unbelievable generosity to their workers and the City of Birmingham as a whole.
They built their factory in Bournville and built houses for their workers that all had gardens, and fruit trees. Remember this was a time when people lived in back to back slums without much sanitation.
The factory itself has sports fields and it had a theatre, social club, gardens (separate gardens for the ladies Smile). The company looked after it's workers, but also built alms houses for the retirees.
The family have given so much acreage of green space to the City, that is still used by hundreds of thousands of people every year.

They provided so many leisure facilities around the City, not just sport and outdoors, but as mentioned music, arts and drama. Schools too. There is a Carilion on top of Bournville Junior school, and there is an organ in the Quaker meeting house on Bournville Green - the only Quaker meeting house with an organ, as the Cadbury family wanted the meeting house to be used by other Churches too. They supported the building of the beautiful Serbian Orthodox Church in Bournville in the 1960s.
As previously mentioned, you will find Cadbury family members as Trustees of all sorts of charities and community organisations and educational institutes.

Cadbury's is American chocolate now, it's owned by Mondelez. It's not nearly as good as when I was a child sadly.

I think a lot of people haven't factored in the loss of taste that comes with age. It's never going to taste like it did to you several decades ago.

How does this account for the fact that some brands still taste good and have a far better taste and mouth feel to Cadbury's?

I think your assumption is way off.

Munchyseeds2 · 17/11/2023 19:10

It changed when sold to America, I remember when it smelt and tasted lovely.
We don't buy it now 😟

@Freddo75

Jay Blades does a piece on Cadburys and Bournville in his recent TV series here

Or Aled Jones did a whole Songs of Praise about it here

Bit more info here

Here George Cadbury is described as one of the Country's most inspiring and radical social reformers.

The brothers had LOADS of children, and now of course there are grandchildren and great grandchildren.

BrimfulOfMash · 17/11/2023 21:50

There are at least 5 Cadbury family charitable trusts, from the family Mn Ey and family members still involved.

I used to know one of them, still a Quaker.

It is a shame they sold to the horrendous American multi nationals with no appreciation of actual chocolate.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 17/11/2023 22:28

There's no doubting that the Cadbury family were great, socially-minded, philanthropic people, who did an enormous amount of good and left an amazing legacy in Birmingham.

However, I think it's a mistake to think that is has anything in common with the Mondelez chocolate that happens to bear their name nowadays. I don't see why anybody would continue to buy that chocolate now purely out of a sense of loyalty to the Cadbury family.

Jesse Boot also did a great deal for the people of Nottingham, where his legacy can still be seen to this day; but the huge international conglomerate that now owns the company that he started has nothing whatsoever to do with him or his legacy, apart from having kept his name to cash in on.

You must be very young not to recall that Cadburys used to be real dairy... milk and cream that is.......now replaced by shite palm oil.

UGH don't give it houseroom! Cadburys now owned by shysters Mondelez.

I’m 58 so not young…and I still like Cadbury

zingally · 18/11/2023 11:13

I love Cadburys! It's probably my favourite.

Don't like Galaxy, as find it too sweet and it gives me a sore throat. I love the dark choc Lindt balls, but they are too expensive for anything but the occasional treat.

Lovingangelsinstead · 16/11/2023 22:55

I actually prefer Cadburys over a fancy box of chocolates! Love a Cadbury caramel or whole nut!

Me too, love Cadbury's choc. Funnily enough it's only on MN I've seen the werird opinion about it. Everyone I've ever known irl has loved/does love Cadburys.
I also love Lindt and Milka.

RampantIvy · 18/11/2023 14:21

I know people who love it and people who daon't. We all like different things.

Gowlett · 19/11/2023 18:14

They’ve only gone & changed Twirl.
The last decent bar available…

The original was made with chocolate sort of layered to form the inside, then coated. Like the chocolate was folded inside.

Just got one today. It’s now a coated Flake. Not the same.
The bite / texture is totally different, as it crumbles like a Flake.

And I’m lucky enough to have the Irish Cadbury’s…
So disappointed. I won’t be buying it again.

Also got some 7Up, which hadn’t changed much.
But, Acesulfame K? I don’t buy diet drinks. And here it is!

BrimfulOfMash · 20/11/2023 09:36

Noooooooo! Not Twirl!

The only Cadbury bar I was still (occasionally) buying!

Gowlett · 20/11/2023 10:36

BOM, first thing I noticed was that the back was not fully coated, saving them X% of chocolate. Then I bit into it…

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 20/11/2023 10:59

I always understood (may have been errantly) that the Twirl still used the old recipe chocolate, as they couldn't find a way to get the required consistency and texture from the waxy palm oil-ridden cheap stuff. It sounds like they may have finally perfected the recipe Sad

Spidey66 · 20/11/2023 11:03

YABU. Cadburys is the food of the Gods.

Gowlett · 21/11/2023 14:53

That’s right, Father. They have to use chocolate crumb. It’s why both Twirl & Flake were still decent. My issue isn’t the chocolate itself (which was okay). Just that the bar I ate wasn’t a Twirl, as such. Just a chocolate coated Flake. Twirl had its own folded consistency. That seems to be no longer the case.
