To think Cadburys is vile.

The chocolate is gross but the family totally sold out on all their principles. Disgusting.

Wouldn't buy that shite if you paid me.

The whole nut though... 🤤

I don't think any chocolate taste that good anymore

I tend to agree. Cadbury’s is awful, but I’m not overly keen on the likes of Tony’s or Milka that always get mentioned on these threads either. Ritter is ok if it has something it it, I don’t think the chocolate is nice enough for a plain bar. Lindt, the dark chocolate is good but the milk chocolate is just too sweet for me.

I think the best value chocolate now tends to be the supermarket premium bars. Whoever is producing Belgian and Swiss chocolate for Marks and Waitrose has still got it.

YukoandHiro · 16/11/2023 22:51

It's owned by a massive US corporate now - they sold out years ago, it was a big story at the time.

And it tastes vile now too.

settlingsusan · 16/11/2023 22:54

I can't eat it any more. It's all sugar and no flavour. Really miss proper chocolate but I suppose it's better for my teeth and waistline that they are now so overly and teeth-achingly sweet. That texture too...urgh. And the lack of melt when hot, the squish of sugary lumps instead. Grim.

Lovingangelsinstead · 16/11/2023 22:55

I actually prefer Cadburys over a fancy box of chocolates! Love a Cadbury caramel or whole nut!

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/11/2023 22:56

Cadburys was a major employer in my home town. In fact when the wind was blowing from the north you could smell chocolate in the breeze. Then the factory closed down and production moved elsewhere when they sold out to Kraft. Questions were even asked in parliament.
Now the chocolate tastes awful.

(I had connections who worked in the factory so was kept well supplied with mini eggs).

I find that too..... although I don't eat a huge selection anyway.
Every one of them seems to leave an aftertaste that is quite unpleasant. The only one I do still like is mint Aero, and even then, it is probably becuase the mint flavour cancels out any possible aftertaste.
I was, through the summer having a Tesco meal deal, and would always include a small Lindt bar - and didn't even realise for quite a while, that it was the Lindt (which I loved) that was making me feel so bad.

Gowlett · 16/11/2023 22:59

There isn’t really any nice big brand chocolate anymore.

Devilsmommy · 16/11/2023 23:02

Have eaten many a Cadburys bar but I always preferred Galaxy anyway😁

HootyMcBooby · 16/11/2023 23:06

I don't mind it.
It's FAR nicer than Hershey's chocolate, if anyone has tasted that?
Tastes like ACTUAL vomit, apparently they use a milk product or process it in some way that produces a chemical found in vomit (or something, I can't be bothered to Google it).
American consumers apparently are so used to it they can't taste it, but to Brits the taste is very vomit-like.
Utterly disgusting. Sorry to any American Mumsnetters.

I'm inclined to agree with you. The Co-op does good chocolate as well.

Lolaandbehold · 16/11/2023 22:24

I think they added anti melt agent to Cadbury’s Dairy Milk some years ago. They have not done so in Ireland and the Dairy Milk in Ireland is to die for.

I believe Freddos are still made in Ireland too. They taste like our Dairy milk used to. Do you know any other ‘only made in Ireland’ bars?

The anti melt addition means it’s no longer possible to top cakes with. It’s impossible to melt it without it granulating. It’s so odd.

settlingsusan · 16/11/2023 23:09

Do you know what they should do? The Chocolate Challenge! Like the Pepsi vs. Coke challenge you'd get at a county show in the 90s but with Cadbury, Lindt, Hersheys, Galaxy and supermarket own. I also think Herseys is vile but for the same reasons Cadbury's is now vile, just perhaps less sugar.

YANBU it’s shit.

for cheap chocolate Ritter sport is the best no contest

Rotter Sport Marzipan is lovely!!!!

APurpleSquirrel · 16/11/2023 23:27

I can't eat it now - for me I think it was the addition of Shea Butter to the mix, it just tastes waxy. I had a bag of mini eggs last year (used to love them) & genuinely thought they'd gone rancid or where out of date. Tried another - same.
It has a really odd mouth feel now too.
I don't eat as much chocolate now - mainly Lindt which does actually melt!

UsingChangeofName · 16/11/2023 23:45

Really interesting. Thank you. Are there any of the family still involved in this part of the venture

Whereas I don't think anyone from the family is still involved in the business, there are Cadbury descendants on all sorts of Trustee Boards - not just Trusts set up by the very, very large number of family members, but also as Trustees of other excellent organisations and Charities, for example the Scouts. But that is just one example. You see the Cadbury name supporting so many different civic and charitable causes.

haha! I didn’t realise there were lots of heirs. Crikey. Is there an heir to the fortune?

pray tell where you are buying a dairy milk that melts in Ireland? I'd have to put one between my arse cheeks for 2 hours solid to get any fecking Cadbury's product to melt and I am in Ireland. It's not anti-melt, it is cheap ingredients.

Catsmere · 17/11/2023 00:17

I loved it all my life until about three years ago when I started eating Aldi’s dark chocolate. Haven’t eaten Cadbury’s since then, so I don’t know if it’s flavour has gone to the dogs in Australia as well.

Indeed. I think they are owned by Mondelez now. First Kraft and then Mondelez have completely ruined Roses (and all Cadbury’s milk chocolate in general). I wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole now. All the Roses sweets taste the same now: overly sweet and taste of nothing at all. Mind you, they also ruined Dairy Milk. Can’t stand all those “fancy” flavours. I think the only bar that comes vaguely close to the old formula is Twirl. But I still view it with suspicion as it is just NOT it.

Same with Toblerone since Mondelez got its mits on it - decrease in size and taste. Used to love it, now I can’t stand it. Awful.

@HootyMcBooby snap for vomit re: Hershey’s, that’s exactly what it tastes of. 🤮 And that’s from someone who cannot have enough of milk chocolate (not a fan of dark one). I would rather give up chocolate for life than have Hershey’s.

Isittimeformynapyet · 17/11/2023 00:19

Totally agree OP.

I started a thread a few years ago about how Cadbury's Roses are so disgusting these days. Some people agreed with me, but a hoard of angry mumsnetters came after me with pitchforks and torches! (figuratively, of course).

Imo the manufacturers are taking the piss out of consumers - it just tastes like sugar and palm oil.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 17/11/2023 00:26

Cadbury’s is awful, but I’m not overly keen on the likes of Tony’s or Milka that always get mentioned on these threads either.

I don't find Tony's 'all that', although it is nice; but Milka used to be amazing. Unfortunately, it's now owned by Mondelez - who also own Cadbury's - so they've slashed costs, quality and taste, as per their standard MO. Despite all the protestations, Mars will probably do the same to Hotel Chocolat now (although it isn't anywhere near as great as they claim anyway).

I still eat Cadbury's and other 'standard' chocolate, but I do rue the way it used to taste. It used to be a really special treat, whereas now it's just cheapo everyday 'it'll do' stuff.

GuessItsANameChange · 17/11/2023 00:26

I didn’t like it even before the palm oil. Cadbury’s caramel, in particular, tastes like how dog shit smells.

And no, you can’t have my dog.
