The chocolate is gross but the family totally sold out on all their principles. Disgusting.

Wouldn't buy that shite if you paid me.

I voted YABU, because these threads come up on MN several times a year.

CheesyJacketPotato · 17/11/2023 05:47

Yep it's disgusting

CheesyJacketPotato · 17/11/2023 05:50

They were Quakers OP:

RampantIvy · 17/11/2023 08:01

Rowntree's and Fry's were also founded by Quakers as cocoa and sugar were considered ethical alternatives to alcohol.

Thepeopleversuswork · 17/11/2023 08:04

AIBU to hate the overuse of the word "vile" much more than Cadbury's?

BoobyDazzler · 17/11/2023 08:04

It doesn’t taste anything like it used to.

lidl make chocolate that tastes like chocolate, so I buy that instead.

Gowlett · 17/11/2023 08:08

Thepeopleversuswork, yes. It’s word that should only be used to describe extreme wrongness. Not chocolate that no longer tastes nice. Vile is in the same category as “evil monster” etc, as seen in tabloid headlines. I hate seeing it on MN…

CaramacFiend · 17/11/2023 08:10

I've still got a serious creme egg fetish tbh.

RampantIvy · 17/11/2023 08:11

Now, I really, really dislike creme eggs. They are for people who don't like chocolate.

aSofaNearYou · 17/11/2023 08:13

I always find it interesting when people say the recipe for chocolate brands has changed, because I never notice. I think maybe I just like chocolate so much that I'd be pleased either way, because I do notice it with other products.

People have really high standards on here - I definitely would not call it vile.

I love chocolate too! I think you can like the nasty stuff and still appreciate quality. Like how plenty of people enjoy a cheeky maccas but still appreciate fine dining.

goingtotown · 17/11/2023 08:20

So don't buy it. I love it.

I think they added anti melt agent to Cadbury’s Dairy Milk some years ago. They have not done so in Ireland and the Dairy Milk in Ireland is to die for.

It's not that good...

This! It always makes me giggle when these competitive hatred of mass produced chocolate threads turn up.

Just a ludicrously melodramatic word to apply to describing chocolate.

See also; people who don't change their sheets twice a day or fail to remove "outdoor clothes" before sitting on their own bed being described as "grim".

Just take it all down a few notches, people.

gotomomo · 17/11/2023 08:27

Best everyday type chocolate in the U.K. now is Lidl's, far better than the brands, their jd gross (premium) ones

gotomomo · 17/11/2023 08:29

Of course handmade Belgian chocolates taste better but they are ££& so not a comparison of Cadbury!

EsmeSusanOgg · 17/11/2023 08:30

It was a hostile takeover, if I recall. Cadburys didn't want to sell, but Kraft bought a controlling stake.

ssd · 17/11/2023 08:36

Op seems overly invested in the family behind Cadbury. I'm getting weird vibes.

Lolaandbehold · 17/11/2023 08:37

It’s all relative. 😀

SallyWD · 17/11/2023 08:41

I like it. People say it tastes gross since it was sold but I don't notice much difference.

justaboutdonenow · 17/11/2023 08:41

JudyGemstone · 16/11/2023 22:25

YANBU it’s shit.

for cheap chocolate Ritter sport is the best no contest

Ritter Sport is so good!

It's a shame so few places sell it but just last night I managed to snag one of their 'whole hazelnut' bars.

RampantIvy · 17/11/2023 09:00

Point taken @CaramacFiend 😀

I don't eat much chocolate, so when I do eat it I want something I will enjoy. The last chocolate bar I ate was Co-op branded. I 'm not a chocolate snob. I just don't like Cadburys.

Jifmicroliquid · 17/11/2023 09:01

Late review 😂

That's the problem when you start selling shares, though: you can't control who buys them.

I find that, once companies get to a size and position where they start selling out to shareholders, everything becomes about profit and then quality plummets.

Fair enough, business IS about making profit; but it's a much easier decision for smaller companies to make: whether they want to run a brilliant, high quality, respectable firm that makes a very good profit/living for those who work there; or whether they don't care about quality, reputation or customer care and are willing to reduce it to the very minimum possible before people actually abandon them, in pursuit of every last penny.
