Nooooo a polo neck is a type of jumper. 😁

BertieBotts · 17/11/2023 08:07

Polo neck could be a jumper or a long sleeve top, it just means it has the extra long neck that you can roll down and fold over itself.

Like this! https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1173986001.html

Polo-neck top - Black - Ladies | H&M GB

Top in soft jersey with a polo neck, long sleeves and a straight-cut hem.

If you want to hear something worse, my husband calls these "polo necks".

Really (inexplicably!) winds me up!

Obviously that’s a step too far and just plain wrong!

BogRollBOGOF · 17/11/2023 09:11

A polo shirt is at the smarter end of the t-shirt range. A t-shirt is T shaped. A polo shirt is t shaped, so still the same letter of the alphabet.

DS2 wears polo shirts for school. DS1 wears shirts to be worn with a tie. "School shirt" would mean DS1's uniform and for laundry purposes, I'd just talk about a white wash.
DH tends to favour polo shirts as casual wear.

A sqaure is a rectangle. An oblong is a rectangle. Squares and oblongs are mutually exclusive though 😁

BogRollBOGOF · 17/11/2023 09:13

A polo neck is specifically a high neckline that covers the whole neck and may be a lighter top or a jumper.

AGoodDayForSomebodyElseToDie · 17/11/2023 09:23

The whole “t-shaped” argument falls apart when you consider that a short sleeved shirt (of the formal, tie wearing variety) is also allegedly “t-shaped”, while a long sleeved t-shirt, or worse, a sleeveless t-shirt is not remotely t-shaped at all.

That's a good point

Yes but… I don’t really care. I’m completely comfortable with my polo shirt as subset of T-shirt position and don’t feel the need to get into an argument about it either inside my home or online

Oh go on 😀 Having pointless arguments over things that don't matter is surely the purpose of the Internet.

That and pictures of cats 🐈 😻 🐈‍⬛️ 🐱 🐈

Djimm · 17/11/2023 10:09

How does the whole trousers vs pants thing go in your house?

(Polo shirts are a subset of T shirts for me, distinct from shirts. T shirts you could subdivide into round necks, v necks and polos but they all live together in the T shirt drawer.)

Exactly, all debates on mumsnet are pointless, it’s what the internet is for (other than porn, and, if I’m honest I would rather bicker about shirts than watch porn!).

LTB 😉

Lol, my first ever LTB!

Can you imagine the divorce petition? Reason for divorce - refuses to accept a polo shirt is not a polo neck 😂

Thankfully he has other redeeming qualities!

DragonflyLady · 17/11/2023 11:24

A polo shirt is a smart t-shirt. I’d call it a t-shirt.

HardcoreLadyType · 17/11/2023 11:28

LoobyDop · 16/11/2023 08:52

It’s definitely a polo shirt, not a t shirt, and I’d agree that it is slightly smarter because of the collar. But it took me ages to work out that when Americans talk about “button down shirts” they just mean shirts. With buttons.

Oh. I always assumed a button down shirt was one of those with a collar that buttons to the front of the shirt (near the shoulder blade). But I could well be wrong.

LoobyDop · 17/11/2023 11:44

I’ve googled, and it turns out you’re right. Botton down is where the collar has little buttons, and button up is just a shirt with buttons. Still confused, let’s just blame the Americans 😂

Mazuslongtoenail · 17/11/2023 11:46

For me there are two subsets of t-shirts - polo shirts and crew necks. So yes, it’s a T-shirt.
