After all that, the very word "shirt" has started looking weird to me!

But it's a polo shirt, not a t-shirt. Though my husband (neither British nor American) would call it that.

A button-down is a shirt with a COLLAR that buttons down, preppy- style.

@ZorbaTheHoarder I am originally from the US. My English boyfriend calls these tee shirts and it drives me crazy. The presence or absence of a collar is what defines a tee for me, and it means that I am constantly confused which type of shirt we are discussing.

I'm as British as Yorkshire pudding (especially as I'm from Yorkshire).

That's a polo shirt.

G3t88 · 16/11/2023 09:19

It's a tee shirt

Sexlivesofthepotatomen · 16/11/2023 09:20

Polo shirt, different to a T shirt

idontlikealdi · 16/11/2023 09:21

Polo shirt.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 16/11/2023 09:21

It’s a polo shirt but if someone said t shirt in casual conversation it would be rude to pull them up on it.

Equally if you were trying to meet a dress code that said “no t shirts” I’d check first because you could say a polo shirt is a type of t shirt.

It's a polo shirt.

If I was told to wear a shirt, I wouldn't wear a polo shirt.
If I was told t wear a teeshirt, I would consider a polo shirt.

This!!

CoalCraft · 16/11/2023 09:23

I'd call it a tee shirt

jemenfous37 · 16/11/2023 09:24

Not a tee-shirt, it's a polo shirt!

How often are you discussing t-shirts? And why does it matter which type.

its a polo shirt, but in that fabric its the tshirt type of polo shirt (IMO) & unless its really important to be that specific (golf course, needs collar, type thing) why does it matter??

I would call it a polo shirt.

I get confused when Americans call all sorts of tops 'shirts'.

There is no double e

CurlewKate · 16/11/2023 09:28

There is, as ever in any conversation involving British people, a class element involved.....

In the 80s we called them aertex shirts!
Now they are polo shirts.
They are sort of t-shirts in that they are the shape of a letter T! I thought that's where t-shirt came from? But now I'm doubting myself??

Aertex shirts were made of aertex fabric, it had little holes in it. It was used for short sleeved shirts with collars but I seem to recall other styles as well.

What is Aertex fabric?

What is Aertex Fabric? Aertex is a woven fabric that is very thin, lightweight, and breathable. It has a lot of tiny holes that make it easy for air to flow through. In the summer, it helps keep the body cool, and in the winter, it helps keep the body warm.

Shirt with collar like that is a polo shirt, jersey type fabric without a collar and with short sleeves is a T shirt.

MrsCarson · 16/11/2023 09:32

That's is not a tee shirt. It's a polo shirt.

RosesOnGuitars · 16/11/2023 09:34

We always called them golf shirts.😅

American? We call them golf or tennis shirts. 🇺🇸

Polo shirts took a bit of getting used to. Not as much as the pants/trousers thing though. 😂

VoluptuaSneezelips · 16/11/2023 09:40

It's a polo shirt, this style of shirt was historically and still is used for playing polo. Show him a picture of a Ralph Lauren polo shirt, a brand famous for it's polo shirts that have polo written on the inside of the collar and whose logo is a person on horseback playing...you guessed it polo.

EDIT: Im also English and have always called it a polo shirt.

Or is this NOT a tee shirt
vickylou78 · 16/11/2023 09:42

It's a polo shirt (thicker woven material and has a collar).

I would consider a t-shirt to be made from cotton or jersey with no collar.

2chocolateoranges · 16/11/2023 09:42

It’s a polo shirt which is still a type of t shirt.

maras2 · 16/11/2023 09:42

Polo shirt.
Been in the wash with a red sock. Grin

radiatordrama · 16/11/2023 09:43

@CurlewKate my boyfriend is very well educated. His family is historically lower class but his father made a good living in a professional job

Conkersinautumn · 16/11/2023 09:44

It's made of a knitted fabric, rather than woven. It is also informal and sportswear into every day use so it falls under t-shirt to me.

BlueGlassOfDoom · 16/11/2023 09:45

In the early 80s, when they were v fashionable for a while, we called them ‘Fred Perrys’ as the ‘right’ type were made by the tennis brand 😃

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/11/2023 09:45

Our son, 20, calls anything with short sleeves a t-shirt.

GinAndJuice99 · 16/11/2023 09:45

They were generally called tennis shirts before Lauren marketed them as polo shirts. Anyway, why are we voting?
