The Polo/Tshirt ones we are talking about are rarely ever worn by everyday people outside of primary school.

Lots of adults wear polo shirts.

Hibiscrubbed · 16/11/2023 10:48

Surely a polo shirt falls under the umbrella of ‘tee shirt’.

Italiandreams · 16/11/2023 10:51

I would call it a school shirt because that’s the occasion it’s worn for. Like school shoes or school trousers. I understand what you mean but I think it’s because the kids wouldn’t wear the at other times.

TheChosenTwo · 16/11/2023 10:52

I’ve read the word shirt too many times and now it sounds weird.

Mumof2teens79 · 16/11/2023 10:53

It's a polo shirt, which is a smarter type of tee-shirt

In the UK a "shirt" is typically non-stretch, buttons down the front and usually has a collar (unless it's a grandad or mandarin type) and is the most formal.
Long sleeves more formal than short

A polo shirt is more smart than a tee-shirt because its usually less stretchy, has a couple of buttons and a collar.

T-shirt....stretch, no buttons, round or v-neck, casual

DancingDangerously · 16/11/2023 10:57

It can be a type of tee shirt but not actually a tee shirt, can't it.

Polo shirt.

PhantomUnicorn · 16/11/2023 11:00

Its officially a Polo Shirt, which is slightly more formal than a T-shirt.. like my dad wouldn't have been seen dead in a t-shirt, but always wore Polo Shirts.

My Ex husband wore both, and referred to them interchangeably as t-shirts or collared t-shirts.

If you said t-shirt to me i would think more of a t-shirt than a Polo shirt. Not sure that helps any though xD

My boyfriend wears lots of polo shirts and he is not a child! It also irritates me when he calls his own polo shirts tee shirts.

I would class a polo shirt as a "smart t-shirt", the male equivalent of "a nice top".

So on a scale from casual to formal it would be T-shirt -> polo shirt -> shirt

If an occasion called for formal wear I would not consider a polo but if it was a "jeans and a nice top" type event then I'd consider a polo shirt to be an acceptable male equivalent whereas a t-shirt would feel a bit too casual.

ETA: has anyone else spent so long reading the word shirt on the thread that it's started to lose all meaning, or just me?

TenderDandelions · 16/11/2023 11:51

If you want to hear something worse, my husband calls these "polo necks".

Really (inexplicably!) winds me up!

I’d say a polo shirt is a type of t shirt but definitely not a type of shirt.

pinck · 16/11/2023 14:33

Haha, I’m also American and my (Irish) husband calls sweatshirts sweaters which also drives me a bit nuts but yea ... that’s a polo shirt.

This actually does come up quite a lot! Just this morning my child was told to put on a tee shirt for school when actually it should be a polo shirt. Last night I was told that the tee shirts had been put on to wash. Etc.

My DD calls her formal school shirts tee shirts, drives me mad!

I agree with you on this....he could at least say school shirts

rbe78 · 16/11/2023 16:13

I'm in the "It's a polo shirt, but a polo shirt is a type of T-shirt" camp

This is the most confusing post I've ever seen.

Northernsouloldies · 16/11/2023 21:53

It's definitely a polo shirt I've got the very same hanging up in wardrobe.

MasterBeth · 16/11/2023 21:37

This is the most confusing post I've ever seen.

Yeah, I did a really bad job of what I was trying to say! I've not got the brain power right now to explain what I meant.

Basically, it may be a type of tee shirt (have no idea if it officially is or not tbh), but in terms of what one can or can't wear on casual Friday, a polo shirt is often considered acceptable but a tee shirt isn't. So while it might come under that category, it also doesn't.

Something like that.

AGoodDayForSomebodyElseToDie · 16/11/2023 22:35

A polo shirt is not a type of t-shirt and I’m horrified by posters who think it is.

They’re all shirts. You might cluster t-shirts, polo shirts, rugby shirts (et al) together, to differentiate them from other more formal shirts, but that doesn’t make them all t-shirts any more than t-shirts can reasonably be called a collarless polo shirt.

I’m not sure why I find this so horrifying, but I don’t think I could remain in a relationship with someone who didn’t embrace the distinction. I suspect that’s not a rational standpoint though!

Definitely not a t-shirt. It's a polo shirt.

radiatordrama · 17/11/2023 07:35

@AGoodDayForSomebodyElseToDie honestly, it's good for him that this only came up after over a year together.

@TenderDandelions I quite like polo necks. That way they are unmistakable.
