To ask if anyone still thinks Brexit was a good idea?

Genuinely curious. I can't see how it has improved things at all.

YANBU - Brexit was a terrible idea
YABU - it was a great idea

I couldn't give a shit anymore. Just let it go

amicissimma · 14/11/2023 14:54

One thing I admire about Leavers is that they don't keep starting thread after thread asking whether or not leaving was a good idea.

Which, as PP said, is unknowable, as we can't re-run the events of the last few years with us in the EU.

Apparently Brexit could have been great but the nasty Europeans are punishing the UK for our independence of spirit.

Cough.

Ha so it's still all their fault, turns out Brexit wasn't the solution then. What next????

Daphnis156 · 14/11/2023 15:51

The vote has happened and the matter is decided.
Do let go!

Well, we'd like to let go but we're still dealing with the impact. I do understand that some people would rather brush it under the carpet and not talk about it, but some of us still want to discuss it. In a democracy, we have a right to do that, just as you have a right to tune out/scroll on by, as you wish.

Pipsquiggle · 14/11/2023 15:57

Of course it's a fuck up.

Always people chirping up 'Let it go!' 'It's in the past' etc but never any explanation of why Brexit is working for them.
It's like apathy is the path of least resistance

Crikeyalmighty · 14/11/2023 15:58

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves absolutely. The right wing Tory's brought it up continuously for years and years when we were in the EU, so those of who think it's a crappy decision aimed at grabbing that UKIP vote are fully entitled to bring it up for as long as we see fit.

If you think all is fine and dandy then just scroll past.

Tempnamechng · 14/11/2023 16:03

If I had the vote again it would probably be remain, although I believed what we were being sold at the time - more money for the NHS, tighter rules in immigration, better employment opportunities for lower paid workers. Most importantly we would have been pulled further into the Europe loosing more and more autonomy with our money, laws and leadership. There has been a huge Economic downturn worldwide because of covid, which has made what we knew would be the difficult adjustment even worse, but Bexit's biggest failure is marginalising Northern Ireland. Nobody dares say it, but the failure of our asylum system is having a detrimental effect on local services, accommodation resources and public finances, which is one of the thing we were told Brixit would help to solve.

bonkersAlice · 14/11/2023 14:46

Yep, still think it was a brilliant idea and I'd vote for it again.

It's nice to know that MN hasn't lost its sense of humour.

Moonmelodies · 14/11/2023 16:06

Presumably the only people who didn't think it was a good idea were those that voted LibDem in the last GE, as they were the only party proposing to stop Brexit.
Everyone else, equally culpable.

What nonsense. For a start not everyone had a Lib-Dem candidate to vote for.

Why let go? It will go to the books, together with the aftermath and studies of how it turned out. That's what normally happens with significant history points.
It is the biggest success story of using political marketing against the nation.

As a central European from a bit eurosceptical country, I am soo grateful for your brave example. It significantly changed the rhetorics in my country. While we would like to have some vote to publicly express "EU isn't absolutely faultless and we like to say no things", noone would be stupid enough to make it an exit referendum just to prove the point.

It’s a two horse race in my constituency. Voting Lib Dem would have been a wasted vote and a possible way back in for the Tory.

Yep, same here.

CaramacFiend · 15/11/2023 00:17

My friend has done very well from it. Quit her job as a transport planner earning about £25k and became a Class 1 driver. She passed in four days for a couple of grand and was on £65k a fortnight later.

The wages had stagnated for a good couple of decades prior to Brexit and a large factor was Eastern European drivers happy to work for £9p/h. Companies will now take on new passes and female drivers without batting an eyelid due to the massive shortfall.

OMGitsnotgood · 15/11/2023 00:34

I think it's perfectly acceptable for people to start 'yet another post' if they are genuinely keen to understand what benefits we are seeing. I accept we can't change things, but would feel better if someone could explain the benefits we've seen since we left.
We were in the longest of passport control queues in a European country recently with lots of Brits complaining about the queue whilst the EU line went straight through. I said ' blame the Brexit voters', and one guy said 'what has Brexit to do with it' You couldn't make it up.
I do appreciate that long passport control queues are trivial in the grand scheme of things but that guys response made me shudder.

Tr1skel1on · 15/11/2023 00:53

It's an absolute fucking disaster! As Brexit happened we had a family holiday along the M62 corridoor (don't ask! ) Literally every single place we went, from the garden next to our premier Inn in Hull, to the great auquarium, to the newly repaired roads leading to Leeds, the community projects there. Leeds/Bradford ice rink was fantastic for the great quality ice, however the roofing tiles peeling off weren't great. Every single thing we saw was paid for by EU funding! Bradford ice rink was a perfect example of an extremely important local resource only kept going by local fundraising and an EU grant, admittedly not large, they got nothing from our govt!!!

IBlinkThereforeIAm · 15/11/2023 00:56

We'll never know whether Brexit was a good idea or not, just as we'd never have known whether remaining was better if the vote had been to stay.

By this logic we can never judge whether any decision in the history of humanity was a good idea. 🤣 #Brexitlogic

It's good for people on lower incomes and needing resources such as council housing, needing unskilled or low level skilled jobs.
Bad for middle class or upper class.

Lol!!!!!

I think, OP, that the lack of grasp of economics on the thread makes it clear yet again why the UK decided to shoot itself in the foot and then in the face also for good measure.

Tr1skel1on · 15/11/2023 00:58

I dread to think how Bradford ice rink is now without EU money. I hope it has secured other funding. For my 9 year old daughter it was her dreams come true but I don't dare take her back

The Ex terrorists I know who voted Leave are delighted at how it's going.

The folk who voted Leave because it was what God wanted, or for tacist/xenophobic reasons are less thrilled.

If that's genuinely how narrow your thought process is, at least try to make your point with relevant or believable examples.
As if you're actually meeting up with ex ter to discuss leaving the EU.. 😂

Really? we allowed in 100s of 000s of migrants on 3 or 5 year work visas to do these lower skilled jobs.
Rents have soared, mortgages unaffordable and council housing? you re having a laugh!!!

Where as the MC can carry on as before, they ve plenty of money & job security.

DaisyMaisyFaisy · 15/11/2023 09:23

I voted for Brexit and I still stand by that
