To think 60 is old

Especially for jobs in mental health requiring restraining etc.

rather misleading headline isn’t it?
answer - it depends

Exactly. My husband is past 60, 6’4” and fit. I don’t think he would have too many issues restraining anybody smaller than him.

WhereYouLeftIt · 12/11/2023 14:28

What are you ACTUALLY asking?

CollagenQueen · 12/11/2023 14:29

I find this an interesting question.

My DH is 51. My son-in-law is 25 and my son is 26. Without a shadow of a doubt, my DH could beat the shit out of both of them, probably even if it was two against one. Purely because DH is enormous and trained how to fight with his job. At some point though, the dynamic will shift and do a turn about. I wonder when that will be? Not 60, I don't think.

My FIL is 75 and my Dad is 81. The difference between them is STARK!

FIL can climb mountains, weight lift, walk nature trails etc and mentally he is as sharp as a pin. He does texting, whatsapp, ordering and selling stuff on-line. He drives a sports car. He does several long haul holidays every year.

My Dad, on the other hand, is wheelchair bound, needs carers 4 times a day and doesn't really understand how some things work any more.

Do I think of FIL as old? No.

Do I think of my Dad as old? Positively very elderly.

decionsdecisions62 · 12/11/2023 14:31

My brother is 75 and runs up mountains. Don't be so narrow minded.

Bouffe · 12/11/2023 14:32

You're joking, OP. My BIL has worked for the last 25 years as a mental health nurse, a lot of the time in the community. He's a rugby player who ran the Snowdon marathon last year and the London marathon this year.

feellikeanalien · 12/11/2023 14:35

I think the reason that people don't like to be called old is because the term is usually used in a way that is derogatory (especially on MN) e.g. "all those old people that vote Tory", "all those old people who are the only thing stopping the younger generation from having their perfect life".

60 isn't young in years but I think that a lot of those aged 60 plus still feel young at heart.

10HailMarys · 12/11/2023 14:35

I mean, you’d struggle as a professional footballer.

Neither of my parents were weak or frail at 60 and could certainly have done the kind of work you describe.

OrtolanLBunting · 12/11/2023 14:41

I'm almost 50 and think 60 is old - it's well into the second half of your life. No one has a problem with saying 20 or 25 is young so why can't we say 60 is old?

In that case 50 is old, isn't it?

CandyLeBonBon · 12/11/2023 14:43

Why do you think that, @Vinted777 ?

coffeedrinking · 12/11/2023 14:43

No it’s young.

Lifeinlists · 12/11/2023 14:50

It's not young. Unless you're going to live to 120 then I suppose it could be.

lurchermummy · 12/11/2023 15:04

No I don't.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 12/11/2023 15:15

I'm 60.

I run rings around a lot of the twenty something people that I do gym classes with. I use higher weights in classes, and I probably do twice as many burpees and push ups than they do.

I don't feel old apart from when I first get out of bed in the mornings. That lasts about two minutes.

I think I'm fitter than a lot of women in their forties and fifties. Because I work at it.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 12/11/2023 15:20

Do you mean restraining (surely you have two people to do that anyway) or retraining?

60 is just a number, it's whether the person is fit enough physically and mentally. A 20 year old might not be fit enough.

Also depends on type of fitness. I could pass an RAF bleep test but I couldn't do the number of press-ups they would require!

Floatinginatincan · 12/11/2023 15:25

My mum retired from her job as a mental health professional last year at 76. She was very good at her job, highly respected & received numerous recognition awards. She still does some consultancy work now.

raabbgghhrbb123 · 12/11/2023 15:27

60 is the last year of middle age according to Google, so 61 must be old.

Squirrelsbite · 12/11/2023 15:28

your as old as you feel

Teafoot · 12/11/2023 15:30

It's not about age, it's about health and a lot of that is within our control.

I (at 50) did what I thought was a respectable time in a 10 mile road race this morning. The women's over 70 category was won by someone 5 minutes quicker than me, no one thinks she's old.

Im 61, I feel old compared to my 30 year old colleagues but feel much younger than people i know in the 60s

Itsnotchristmasyet · 12/11/2023 15:32

Honestly, I don’t think many employers would pay to train up a 60yo knowing they’re going to retire in a few years.

I think a 60yo would work fine with MH but it depends how much training they would need to do the job.

I know lots of 45yo+ who have been given jobs/training over younger people because stereotypically they are more likely to stay in that job for the foreseeable.
Lots of employees prefer older employees.

It depends what job it is, how much training it takes and what experience you have already etc but I would definitely still apply for it anyway!!

Ahh I thought she meant retraining but it could be restraining.

In that case it completely depends on the individual.

This

I crouched down to turn up DD's trousers once. She said that her peers at school couldn't do that as their legs weren't strong enough to crouch any length of time 😳
I shift heavier weights than both DD's (20's) both in classes and with db's/weights machines

mondaytosunday · 12/11/2023 15:36

Im 61 and while I couldn't chase someone down I'm pretty strong. But most women probably couldn't restrain a man unless they had certain training, no matter what age.

RuthW · 12/11/2023 15:51

60 is still youngish.

Old is 75 plus according to N h s

BrimfulOfMash · 12/11/2023 16:09

I am 66 and can lift 30Kg bulky sacks in and out of my car, easily walk 12 miles over fells / mountains, do a range of strength gym classes without trouble.

I imagine that restraint is based on technique as well as pure strength? And many smaller women would always have difficulty with stronger men? Surely team work is key?

What’s your specific context OP? Otherwise it’s just goady.
