To think 60 is old

Especially for jobs in mental health requiring restraining etc.

OP posts:
x2boys · 12/11/2023 13:53

I can see your point having actually Been in a nurse in acute in patient care in mental.health which I'm guessing most people on this thread haven't
It can be a very physically demanding job at times
And elderly mental.health wards are even worse.

39and · 12/11/2023 13:53

Probably another post to get people worked up.

APocketOfGooseFood · 12/11/2023 13:56

FIL is 70. He retired at 65 from being a plasterer and builder, which he’d done since he was 15. He could certainly have still done a physical job, and did , at 60. He is still a karate black belt and instructor, and I would bet he could still do the same job now that he always had.

There is no blanket age beyond which individuals are unable to do certain work. It’s all down to the job and the person. Blanket statements like your thread title are just ageist nonsense.

rockinginarockingchair · 12/11/2023 13:58

I`ll dead before 60 so no worries.

VisionsOfSplendour · 12/11/2023 13:59

What about the age of 60 makes you think everyone that age is exactly the same

Surely this isnt a serious question?

Probably another post to get people worked up.

I expect so.

itsmyp4rty · 12/11/2023 14:03

I'm almost 50 and think 60 is old - it's well into the second half of your life. No one has a problem with saying 20 or 25 is young so why can't we say 60 is old?

My dad was still a runner at 70 with a very physical part time job. He was super fit. It didn't mean he wasn't old.

It very much depends on fitness though as to how capable you're going to be to be able to restrain someone. I'm assuming there will be technique involved as well and you probably wouldn't be alone. I would say that in your 60's you might be brilliant due to a huge amount of experience and still keeping physically fit or you might have had enough and feel it's too much especially if you have health issues. Depends very much on the individual but there's no point pretending that the average 60 year old is going to be as strong and fit as the average 25 year old.

TinyTeacher · 12/11/2023 14:04

An older person is more likely to be experienced and in a management role? Physical strength isn't everything! Besides, many are in good health then - my dad at 60 was still stronger and fitter than I'll ever be. There's just not enoughcontext to this statement. Some 60 year olds will not be capable of physical restraint. Some will. Many will not require it as part of their job.

tinytemper66 · 12/11/2023 14:06

Are you 60 and have been told you are too old to restrain or are you just being ageist?

35965a · 12/11/2023 14:07

There’s a woman in my gym who is 70 and she’s fitter than anyone else there, honestly she is an inspiration. So is 60 old? People age differently and have different lifestyles and luck of health, so in some 60 seems old but in others 60 does not seem old at all.

ilovesooty · 12/11/2023 14:07

I can't be bothered to debate the goady thread title quite frankly. I'm sure the OP is rubbing her hands at the engagement she's getting.

rockinginarockingchair · 12/11/2023 13:58

Yeah, I'll join you on that bench and wonder how so many people manage to twist themselves into outrage at the prospect of someone calling them old - boo fucking hoo.

stayathomer · 12/11/2023 14:11

It’s not old by it is for a physical job like that unless you’re Madonna or something!! I started back working in retail at the age of 40 and my body cannot cope well with running up and down stairs, lifting boxes, stretching to reach stuff etc and then I look at my sister who nurses and what she does and I wonder how she can stand at the end of the day! (She’s nearly 50)

RosesAndHellebores · 12/11/2023 14:11

Guess what @Vinted777 at 63 I earn £110k, have paid off my mortgage, have lots of lovely spends, respect at work, a fab dh and lovely grown up children. I can retire in a cpl of years with a FS pension. It’s absolutely fantastic being over 60.

Hope you are looking forward to it.

You don't have to be Madonna to be fit and strong at 60.

Many 60 year olds have been going to the gym for 30+ years and are quite capable of doing their physical jobs.

NorthStarRising · 12/11/2023 14:14

You do understand that restraint is about techniques and strategies more than brute force? It’s not cage fighting.
I’m over 60, reasonably fit.
Working in demanding jobs is more about your personal health and attitude rather than chronology.

NorthStarRising · 12/11/2023 14:16

Is this your first ever post, OP?

InSpainTheRain · 12/11/2023 14:17

I think it depends on a few things

  1. What is the health of the person like
  2. What is their outlook like - do they feel positive or negative about retraining.
  3. Have they some experience that would be useful already or is this retraining from scratch
  4. How long is the period of retraining.

But generally I would say 60 isn't old and a new field can really help someone find their spark again of they are interested.

stayathomer · 12/11/2023 14:19

TheresaCrowd
The three of us that are in our 40s in the shop were sitting around with people of the same age from another branch last Christmas and we were all saying how much harder it is now and we’re all in 40s. Great if people are well able but the general consensus is you aren’t close to how able you were in your 20s and most of us have dodgy knees/backs or the like- problems most 20 year old or even 30 year olds don’t have (in 43 now). All of us were saying oh to have a sit down job as you get older!

ThelmaBorden · 12/11/2023 14:20

rather misleading headline isn’t it?
answer - it depends

The post says restrain. Not retrain.

It's within the middle-aged bracket.

Nobody lives to 120.

Lavenderflower · 12/11/2023 14:21

No I don't think it is old. That being said, I know many of my colleagues who feel robbed by forced to retire after 60.

Nobody lives to 120.

Middle age means "the period in your life when you are no longer young but have not yet become old."

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/middle-age#:~:text=Middle%20age%20is%20the%20period,ages%20of%2040%20and%2060.

It doesn't literally mean "the middle of your life".
