Especially for jobs in mental health requiring restraining etc.

The word 'especially' in the OP would explain this. It includes other work.

It's not stupid if you read it properly instead of picking on the poster.

Who are you in this question? Are you 60 and looking to retrain, in which case YANBU. If you are 30 and a hiring manager who wouldn't consider a 60-year-old candidate then yes, YABU.

I would think that the responses and advice you get will vary according to who you are in this situation.

PostItInABook · 12/11/2023 13:19

Restraint isn’t really about strength when done properly. It is about technique, so yes, YABU.

getinthedust · 12/11/2023 13:19

My friend (same age as me) has complained about being old since their 20s. I think it’s pathetic if I’m honest. You’re old if you have the mindset that you’re old.

Just do what makes you happy.

Ah I can't read! I read RESTRAINING as re-training!

I still think it depends. You could be perfectly fit and strong at 60.

MrsVeryTired · 12/11/2023 13:19

In my place of work we have 3 approx 60yr old women. 2 of those are definitely the toughest and fittest (and most capable in most situations) of all the staff of varying ages. The third is one of the least.

Depends on the person and in general, no, 60 is not old.

FarEast · 12/11/2023 13:20

I'm sure I thought that when I was a prejudiced youngster with no experience.

SgtJuneAckland · 12/11/2023 13:20

DF is 70 he runs 5-10k a day or cycles at least that, in pretty much all weathers other than the extreme storms etc. He also goes hiking/walking regularly. He is stronger than I am. He's retired but he'd be much more physically able to restrain someone than I am. YABU

Another day, another ageist thread on MN

😂

Starlightstarbright2 · 12/11/2023 13:22

I work in a job where I look at peoples ages . I have had 70 odd year olds that I think look under 60.. I think there is a great variation in how people age .

RosesAndHellebores · 12/11/2023 13:23

Oh and my BIL is 63, still lecturing as a senior academic, full-time, competes in iron man/triathlon type events and manages a smallholding of 20 acres.

I remember listening to a man in his early forties RAGE that various people senior to him didn't just disappear to let him have his due! I pointed out to him that mister 60 and ms 59 had children at university (expensive) and that as a single man of 42 he might be in that position himself one day?????? It briefly took the wind out of his rage. Well, his expressed rage!

What does “old” mean?

It means having lived for a long time. And then we get to debate how long, long is. And I don't think 60 is necessarily old but it can be. In many areas of the world, and in areas in England the healthy life expectancy age falls below 60. You might agree or disagree with a definition being set at 60 but I don't think it's so outrageous it can be considered ageist as a stand alone statement.

tescocreditcard · 12/11/2023 13:32

Of course 60 is old.

It's not young is it. A lot of people are deluded and ageist.

Givejamesbluntachance · 12/11/2023 13:36

Well it is old for giving birth or moving out of their parents' house but it is young for dying or an old people's home.

It is not so old that a person would cease to be able to work in mental health if they had been capable in their 50s. I imagine a 60 year old with years of experience would be more useful than a 25 year old fresh to the mental health workplace. The younger employee would eventually become experienced and therefore would be valuable but would not yet have reached their potential, unlike a 60 year old who had been there for years.

Some 60 year olds may have health problems that would make the job difficult but this is more of a health issue than an age issue as it would apply at any age.

Xatz63 · 12/11/2023 13:39

I am 60 and where I work I do not restrain due to medical conditions, I do however have years of experience in deesculating situations that arise and I do a good job. Restraining is always a last resort .
So no at 60 I do not feel I am too old.

SeatonCarew · 12/11/2023 13:40

My husband's aunt died at the age of 93 of a heart attack. She was running for a bus at the time.

For most people nowadays, 60 is still quite young.

margotrose · 12/11/2023 13:41

tescocreditcard · 12/11/2023 13:32

I'd describe 60 as middle aged.

Most sixty year olds work full-time and have children living at home!

Idontgiveashitanymore · 12/11/2023 13:43

I’m in my 60s and work in dementia care , can I do my job ? Yes!
could I restrain someone and transfer them safely to the floor ? No!
life and people have certain limitations at any age .

Yes, I was going to say this

This :

Though I wouldn't relish wrestling around now that I am over 60 I could still restrain someone using the proper control and restraint methods that I have been taught and used.

lljkk · 12/11/2023 13:45

I'm a few years away from 60.
Of course it's "old"!

But old doesn't mean unfit. (or decrepit or ugly or incapable)
Both yabu & yanbu.

GymBergerac · 12/11/2023 13:48

Well I'm 54 now and I'm fitter and stronger than I ever was at 34, so it's all relative. I'd be quite confident I could restrain someone in an emergency (within realistic body/size ratios)
I'm probably going to have to work till I die anyway, so I kinda hope I'm not "too old" for anything!!

ThePoshUns · 12/11/2023 13:50

Im 52 and stronger and fitter than some women half my age.
Ridiculous ageist thread .

TheresaCrowd · 12/11/2023 13:52

If you're talking about strength/stamina, there are plenty of 60+ year olds who could handle that, compared to much younger people who are obese for example.

It's not so much about age, but more about the person obviously.
