To wonder why cars don’t need keys to start now?

Because it is actually killing me. No idea where keys are; clearly in the car somewhere as it starts, but where? In the ignition they are in a set place harming no one.

I hang my key on a lanyard round my neck. I recommend this idea to all who have ignition-free keys.

SageMist · 11/11/2023 17:19

My keys are in my pocket.

PuttingDownRoots · 11/11/2023 17:19

Look between the seats ad the central console!

I have the opposite problem. My keys live in my handbag. When I drive DHs car, I'm always forgetting to take them out of the ignition!

steff13 · 11/11/2023 17:19

Put them in the pocket at the bottom of the door. Or the cup holder. Or the console. Just make sure you put them in the same place every time.

Bobbotgegrinch · 11/11/2023 17:20

Just pick a home for them and put them there every single time when you get in the car. It'll become habit quick enough. DP loses her keys in the house all the time. Mine are always on the hook because I put them there.

Same, no need to take them
Out is there?

EasterIssland · 11/11/2023 17:23

On the side of the co-pilot seat ? Or below the driver seat but at the back ? On the railing of the chair ?

I would strongly recommend not wearing keys around your neck when driving…

quivers · 11/11/2023 17:26

My house keys and the car key are all on the same keyring, so having a car that started without them wouldn't help me much.

Myfuckingcar · 11/11/2023 17:49

I think if I was able to find them to put them in the same place that might be useful advice.

It’s destroying my relationship, days out, everything. It really is breaking me (I know, dramatic but after another row with DH about it I’m so fed up.)

VisionsOfSplendour · 11/11/2023 17:56

Are you looking for a single key/fob or something on a key ring?

I have mine on a chunky key ring so there's no chance of it slipping down any small spaces

Ponderingwindow · 11/11/2023 17:59

I imagine because cars are just computers at this point.

my fob never leaves my bag. I keep it on a clip in the bag so it doesn’t get lost. House key is on the same clip and is only a backup of the electronic lock fails.

brokenhearted2 · 11/11/2023 18:20

@HakunaMatiłda my 'key' is a small smooth pebble shaped thing. It would no more puncture my bowel than a large bottom on my coat would. They say the person had a large bunch of keys. Must have been enormous and with lots of protuberances. Mine isn't anywhere near my bowel. If mine went anywhere it would be my stomach but like I said, no more than a large coat button

LittleBearPad · 11/11/2023 18:22

Mines in my handbag. It never comes out.

Shellingbynight · 11/11/2023 19:04

I am absolutely with you, OP. I got my first 'press start button' car last year and I knew it was a recipe for me never knowing where my bloody keys were. So I always behave as if it is a normal key which I need hands on when getting in and out of the car. Otherwise I would have no clue whether it was in the car, a pocket or my bag.

If you have searched all the pockets and cubby holes then the key is probably under a seat.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 11/11/2023 19:31

I always put mine in the cubby hole between the front seats. Is that an option for you? Always put it in the same place. You need it in your hand to press the button to open the car door, so when you get in, put it in the cubby hole.

Oh, and check your glove compartment to find it now. I put my house keys in there and they got caught between the edge of the compartment and the rest of the car! Fortunately it wasn't that difficult to extricate them. It depends on your car though, in our other car that couldn't happen.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 11/11/2023 19:32

And for what it's worth, we managed to lose the key for our other car three years ago (which is a proper key) and have never found it. You'd have thought after three years it would have turned up, but no.

LadyMacB · 11/11/2023 19:34

My keys are in my pocket or in the little cubby hole between the front seats. I’m not sure why that’s difficult??!

KrisAkabusi · 11/11/2023 19:40

Keys in pocket. Never need moving. Or keys in handbag, never need moving. I can't understand why this is causing any stress at all

Badbadbunny · 11/11/2023 19:42

Am I missing something? Surely you still need the plastic/fob press button thingie to "lock" and unlock the doors? Do cars really lock and unlock themselves automatically as you approach it or walk away from it?

I've got 3 cars, being 15, 8 and 1 year old, all have the "keyless" fobs but they all need you to press the buttons on them to lock/unlock the car.

No - mine locks and unlocks automatically

Impossible for me as my car doesn't have a cubby hole between the seats, not all cars are the same, who knew?

Mine just has a button on the door that I press so no need to take my key out of my bag.

SoupDragon · 11/11/2023 19:51

Mine is on the key ring with my door keys. They're either in a bag, my pocket or with my phone on the centre console if I have neither bag nor pocket. It's not difficult really.

Mine unlocks if the key is near the car. I do have to press the button to lock the car though.
