To wonder why cars don’t need keys to start now?

Because it is actually killing me. No idea where keys are; clearly in the car somewhere as it starts, but where? In the ignition they are in a set place harming no one.

Am I missing something? Surely you still need the plastic/fob press button thingie to "lock" and unlock the doors? Do cars really lock and unlock themselves automatically as you approach it or walk away from it?

I've got 3 cars, being 15, 8 and 1 year old, all have the "keyless" fobs but they all need you to press the buttons on them to lock/unlock the car.

Edited

My car unlocks when you get up to it & when you walk away it locks & sets the alarm. So long as my keys are in my bag or pocket it unlocks so you don't need to physically have your keys in your hand. Its an older, not particularly expensive car but my next car will definitely be keyless. I'm so out of practise having my keys to hand I'd probably spend half my life rooting around in my bag hunting for keys

Should have added that mine will only unlock by pressing the button on the key or pressing the button on the door handle with the key right next to the door.

I know the car is locked because I can test the handle like normal and the mirrors will be folded in.

That's a bit better then. I was reading the bit of the manual relating to the posher version of my model, and the unlocking was by grabbing the handle just as you would on a normal car, or just as you would to check you'd locked it.

Yeah, I’m glad mine doesn’t do that. I wouldn’t be able to cope with the stress of not being able to check the handle.

Somewhere in my enormous handbag. Can never find the bloody things and house keys are attached.

sipsqueak · 11/11/2023 21:27

I've been saying for years that I would be more than happy to have a microchip/microkey implanted in my hand to solve this problem

cakeorwine · 11/11/2023 21:28

DF had an issue with his stop/ start button. Couldn't stop the engine or start it easily.

I know that car manufacturers are trying to make it more difficult for the signal from the key to be used to open a car and start it.

catchmewhenifall · 11/11/2023 21:30

You just need to have a really good search. Mine is usually buried under a seat or in the boot.

Sad that the key issue is ruining your relationship!

Blanketpolicy · 11/11/2023 21:35

Ds has a fiesta and it has a gap at the base of the handbrake where his Airpods case fell into the centre console. We had to remove it to recover them. Are there any gaps like that they could fallen into?

I was driving a car for work and it unlocked itself and opened up the mirrors when I touched the door handle.

LittleGreenDragons · 11/11/2023 21:37

I hate the stupid things. DH regularly walks away with the fob and I'm left trapped in the car with the windows up while he nips into a shop. I'm the annoying person who refuses to shut her door so you can park next to the car.

I have a toddler and a baby so a massive change bag and fumbling around I lose them, constantly.
Empty the bag out and shake it, then replace each item after shaking it too. Otherwise it might have slipped under the baby seats while you were strapping them in. When you find them get one of those whistling/light up fobs that you can attach to it, or an airtag like a pp mentioned.

steff13 · 11/11/2023 17:19

Put them in the pocket at the bottom of the door. Or the cup holder. Or the console. Just make sure you put them in the same place every time.

This!

110APiccadilly · 11/11/2023 21:50

Does your change bag have any smaller pockets? My car keys are often in a small pocket in the change bag.

@HunterHearstHelmsley thanks for saying this as I knew I’d get the sneery ‘you presumably managed when …’ type posts! I seem to be spending a disproportionate amount of my life hunting for keys at the moment. Stressing me out!

Well I didn’t mean my post to be sneery. And it’s still a valid question, what is different from when you had to use the key to start the car.

You leave the house, lock your front door…then what? Are you just chucking your keys in the bag? Are you getting in the car and sorting out you DC (if that is the case then look in the back seat in or near the car seat) If you can’t find your keys how are unlocking your front door?

First step find the keys… second step, get a carabiner that lives on the bag handle, third step clip the keys to the bag. I mean I get it, it’s frustrating but it’s also easy solvable.

Citrusandginger · 12/11/2023 13:11

Where do you keep your house keys op? I keep my car & house keys together and attach them to a lanyard fixed to the strap of whatever bag I'm using; work bag, shopping bag, handbag etc.

If I go out without a bag, I put them in the centre console and wear them round my neck when I get out of the car to complete my errand.

Get home, lock car and replace keys in drawer.

Could that work for you?

SoupDragon · 12/11/2023 14:14

I make sure there's a ring to clip my keys onto in every bag I have. Gamechanger!!

LlynTegid · 12/11/2023 14:26

Another argument for dresses having pockets or wearing jeans which have them.

I feel like the poor relation, my car has a key that I have to put into the door to unlock it, as well as into the ignition to drive it! 😮😁
windy down windows too!

Yes me too, the back windows are manual wind-down as well as having a proper key!

I had no idea there were completely keyless cars! I have to press a button to open and shut the other car. People have all this tech and complain about automatic gearboxes making them feel out of control? Oh well.

Zanatdy · 12/11/2023 16:12

I could understand your DH getting annoyed if someone can just drive off in your car, costing thousands to replace.

Ponderingwindow · 12/11/2023 16:29

If this is a recurring problem you should attach an AirTag or non-Apple equivalent to your key.

for the question about cars not locking, mine is not a Tesla, but I always know it is locked because 1) the side mirrors fold in and 2) the car messages me if I left it unlocked or did anything else to make it unhappy

Ponderingwindow · 12/11/2023 16:32

I would suspect the fob is wedged into the mechanism of the seat. It is probably on the far side. I would get down on the ground and really start feeling and even lightly wiggling every single cm.

OuiOuiMonAmiJeMappelleLafayette · 12/11/2023 16:42

Not helpful now, but attach an AirTag to it. It won't pinpoint exactly where it is, but you can get it to play a sound so you can locate it!!

My car has an app, would be helpful if it also had a key locator on it and the key made a noise!

I'm one of those people who complains about feeling out of control with automatic gearboxes; I want to change gear when I want to change gear! The exception is if it's a really powerful, massive car.

And much of the tech in newer cars is ridiculous, isn't it? It's supposed to be "helpful" but it's just trying to make us into stupider and lazier drivers. We are already stupid and lazy and don't need to be encouraged to be more so!

PonyPatter44 · 12/11/2023 17:16

When you finally find your keys, OP, attach them to your housekeys, and ideally put a lanyard on the keyring. You dont have to actually wear the lanyard, but it makes it easier to find the keys in a bag. My last four cars have all been keyless entry and i love it now I am used to it.

MrsAvocet · 12/11/2023 17:37

Please whatever you do, don't drive with keys around your neck. It's really dangerous.
I have been in a car crash when I had my work ID badge round my neck - just a piece of pastic and a small metal clip attaching it to the lanyard did serious damage to my chest when the airbag deployed.I wouldn't like to think what a key or two could do in similar circumstances. I don't wear anything round my neck in the car now. After my accident I looked for information and discovered that this is not a particularly rare injury and people have been severely injured or even died as a direct result of things like ID cards being impaled in their chest or stomach in a car crash, but it doesn't seem to get much publicity. It's not worth the risk for a bit of convenience.

ghostyslovesheets · 12/11/2023 20:51

Some more expensive cars unlock as you depress the driver’s door handle as long as the fob is in range

Mine does this - it's a Dacia Duster! Not expensive at all

I suspect @XenoBitch 's mum might have one - they key is stupid, black and bigger than a credit card - it also beeps at me when it locks - causing people to turn and look! The key is so dark that I have left it on the console and gone to work more than once - thankfully no self respecting car thief would want it!
