To wonder why cars don’t need keys to start now?

Because it is actually killing me. No idea where keys are; clearly in the car somewhere as it starts, but where? In the ignition they are in a set place harming no one.

What about a holder for them ?

Keys in pocket. Never need moving. Or keys in handbag, never need moving. I can't understand why this is causing any stress at all

Not all my clothes have pockets and I don’t have a handbag - I have a toddler and a baby so a massive change bag and fumbling around I lose them, constantly.

I do think I am losing things a lot at the moment, including my mind it seems, but putting them in X place has just never worked for me.

Am I missing something? Surely you still need the plastic/fob press button thingie to "lock" and unlock the doors? Do cars really lock and unlock themselves automatically as you approach it or walk away from it?

I've got 3 cars, being 15, 8 and 1 year old, all have the "keyless" fobs but they all need you to press the buttons on them to lock/unlock the car.

Edited

Keyless entry. And some cars lock as you walk away from it. I drove one recently and was most impressed!

HolefreeGrail · 11/11/2023 20:16

I just got a Tesla. Your phone is your key, you just walk up to the car and open it. When you walk away it locks. 👍

Put the keys on a carabiner that you hook to the bag.

I mean you presumably managed when keys were actually keys and needed to start the car.

Apossum · 11/11/2023 20:26

If you can’t put them in the same pocket of your bag every time, just having a set place in the car to put them really is the easiest option. It may not come altogether naturally to you but if you make a conscious effort a few times, it’ll soon become habit.
How is this an issue large enough to ruin your relationship?! What on earth is going on?

Genuine question: what's the plan if your phone runs out of charge when you're out and about? Like, drive somewhere, all day walk where phone dies, get home... how?

I've slways been curious what the back up plan would be!!

Some more expensive cars unlock as you depress the driver’s door handle as long as the fob is in range.

If you like to check your car is locked before you walk away, you need to check the back door nit the driver’s door.

How do you know it’s locked? They may be just telling you that

Lammveg · 11/11/2023 20:41

Myfuckingcar · 11/11/2023 17:49

I think if I was able to find them to put them in the same place that might be useful advice.

It’s destroying my relationship, days out, everything. It really is breaking me (I know, dramatic but after another row with DH about it I’m so fed up.)

OP why is it affecting so much of your life?

HolefreeGrail · 11/11/2023 20:45

You have a credit card thing that you can keep in a wallet and that is also a key. But I never let my phone run out of charge, and keep a power bank in my handbag, so I don’t expect to use it.

HolefreeGrail · 11/11/2023 20:49

Hah! Well, it flashes its lights, makes a noise and the mirrors fold in just like any other car does when it locks. And it has a Sentry mode where you have full 360 degrees video of it from your phone. And if anyone walks up to it when it is locked without a key, it flashes up that they are being videoed on its screen. Can you imagine the insurance claims if a car didn’t lock the way it is supposed to?

daylightplease · 11/11/2023 20:49

Mine never comes out of my handbag but I put an air tag on it.
I have keyless entry and driving.

Do you only have one handbag?

Yes. Exactly this in my case. Keys live in handbag and I only use one handbag unless we’re on holiday or at a properly dressy event. And those happen about twice a year…

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 11/11/2023 20:57

My key lives in my bag or in the cup holder and my car beeps at me loudly if the key is in the car and I try to lock it.

Definitely check under seats or between the centre console and the seat.

carddino · 11/11/2023 21:00

Mine absolutely live in the changing bag.

I do not ever leave house without it.

DH knows where they are if he needs car.

I had a Peugeot 108 that did this, deffo not an expensive one Grin

@Myfuckingcar I ALWAYS lost my keys when I had a keyless car. I think because I didn't actually have to think about where they were. I'd get home (in my car) then be unable to get in my house because I had no idea where my keys were, other than somewhere about mu person/car. It sounds ridiculous so I get where you're coming from. I started putting mine on a carabiner and hooking it to a pocket in my bag.

On a side note, I hate keyless cars now. I had one as a hire car recently and the keyless thing didn't work if it was raining. The first time it happened I had to call the AA as I had no idea what the problem was. I had to hold the key in a very specific place then contort myself to press the start button.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 11/11/2023 21:02

Should have added that mine will only unlock by pressing the button on the key or pressing the button on the door handle with the key right next to the door.

I know the car is locked because I can test the handle like normal and the mirrors will be folded in.

SiliconHeaven · 11/11/2023 21:07

I feel like the poor relation, my car has a key that I have to put into the door to unlock it, as well as into the ignition to drive it! 😮😁
windy down windows too!

Myfuckingcar · 11/11/2023 21:08

@HunterHearstHelmsley thanks for saying this as I knew I’d get the sneery ‘you presumably managed when …’ type posts! I seem to be spending a disproportionate amount of my life hunting for keys at the moment. Stressing me out!

RoundTheBendThenBackAgain · 11/11/2023 21:12

Get yourself a whistling/flashing key finder!

Redglitter · 11/11/2023 21:12

I am absolutely with you, OP. I got my first 'press start button' car last year and I knew it was a recipe for me never knowing where my bloody keys were. So I always behave as if it is a normal key which I need hands on when getting in and out of the car. Otherwise I would have no clue whether it was in the car, a pocket

But the point is you don't need to know where they are. So long as they're in your bag the car opens when you get to it so as long as they're in your bag the cars going to work. I dont understand why knowing where they physically all matters. Mine just lives in whatever bag I'm using. The only time I see my keys is when I swap everything from one bag to another

Myfuckingcar · 11/11/2023 21:14

Mine starts without the key but won’t lock without the key, so I keep going to places and having to leave the car unlocked and then anyone could drive off. It really is awful.

OP posts:
XenoBitch · 11/11/2023 21:16

It boggles my my mind too. I can drive, but I don't think I could manage with a modern car now... all the keyless stuff, bluetooth, cameras etc. Give me a car with a CD player and actual keys and I would be happy.

My mum's car has a fob so big, it is almost the size of a mobile phone. It also unlocks her car when we are just walking past it to go elsewhere. And when the car locks again, it makes a pitiful "parp parp" sound. It is embarrassing lol
